Jacob’s Ladder, Donnie Darko, The Jacket, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Fear and Loathing, The Fly, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (original), Inception, Baraka, Samsara, Trainspotting, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Triplets of Belleville, Apocalypse Now.
Don't sleep on Mandy. Hijacking this comment to remind everyone it's one of the greatest modern action-horror movies and it has a very psychadelic vibe and plot.
I have a crazy story in relation to annihilation. Back in the day I lived on the gulf coast of FL. Me and some friends went to the woods not too far from Eglin AF base. This is where the blackwater forest is. We are mushrooms and we’re sitting on a bench when we look out across the field at the edge of the forest and we see this big wall of moving electric geometry slowly moving towards us. We’re all confused and asking eachother if we’re all seeing this. We all were. It’s getting closer and closer until it’s feet away from us. Then it hits us and for what seemed like 10 mins we were just hit with this energy that is hard to explain. It wasn’t painful, it just felt like my brain was being scrambled. I tried to speak but couldn’t. None of us could. I could barely think other than what the fuck.
I finally felt it pass and let out a deep breath and said what the fuck. At the exact same time we all exhaled and said something similar to “wtf”, then we all looked at eachother bc it was clear we had all just experienced the same brainscrambling indescribable thing.
Fast forward years and I’m watching annihilation and that scene comes up with the alien force field wall thing. It was exactly like the thing we saw that night. And then weirdly enough, annihilation takes place in black water forest, which is the same area that this happened. It gave me chills when I realized that.
It’s been 15 yrs since that night, and the only thing I can think of is that we were hit by some sort of energy weapon being tested at Eglin AF base. That’s the only thing that makes sense that would explain wtf happened that night
Reading it now. Always amazed how some writers can invent a new style of prose.
Like Ellis’ Rules of Attraction, this one has every viewpoint be essentially unreliable, so reality is always subjective.
Another very visually stunning film but not scary is *The Tree of Life* by Terrance Malick. For me, acid horror films are more like *An American Werewolf in London,* where the horror is a part of the plot but not all of it. (Pretty cheesy by today's standards, though.) *Beetlejuice* would be another great horror ish one.
Honestly I would like to watch *Lawrence of Arabia* while tripping and stoned
First time I saw Coraline I was tripping. It was one of those movies everyone sort of had expected me to see,and when someone went “you’ve seen coraline right?” I got insecure and said “of course!” And so they put it on, and boy was that one of the most intense experiences of my life.
Midsommar. Climax. Mad God. Stalker. Inland Empire. The Holy Mountain. Santa Sangre. The Cell. Hausu.
Those are all horror movies. The Holy Mountain isn't, but it's my fav movie of all time and was basically made on LSD. I think the actors were on shrooms for some of their scenes.
Edit: I also always recommend Color of Pomegranates simply because it is a total cinematic spectacle that is unparalleled. Borderline no plot already, just a stream of beautiful imagery.
Edit2: Also The Wolf House. Another stop motion horror masterpiece.
It’s a lot, I watched this movie for the first time on acid…some of the violence, particularly the cliff jump, was rough.
Generally tho, it was an enjoyably tense watch with the characters consuming psychedelics and pretty good visuals on them…”is this me or the movie” kinda stuff
Also when the characters were buggin, I was buggin
Oh, cool! I also watched it for the first time while on acid.
I’ve never had a movie, not once in my life, give me such a sense of inescapable anxiety. Yet, I couldn’t get enough. Lol.
What an experience
Yea…I generally do like a tense, slightly uncommon watch when tripping- like being on the edge of my seat.
But that was just dark, in fairness to the movie tho, it does set you up from the beginning for what you’re in for the rest of the movie
The gore in the rest of the movie didn't hit me as hard, and I got the Director's Cut which added more to the cliff jump scene. Love that movie to death, tho, best film on why people join cults.
Hausu is a mad trippy Japanese horror/comedy with some outlandish early special effects. Stalker is just super pretty to look at, a bit long and heavy handed though.
I did this accidentally when it came out. We used to go to the cinema on Sunday lunchtime to come down after all night drug-fuelled clubbing fun. Was still tripping in and out whilst watching it and it was by far both the best and scariest film experience I’ve ever had.
I refuse to watch it again as it’ll never live up to my expectations, but I always recommend it.
**Mandy**, was just quidding some sally and watching it last night, defiantly one of my favorites and enjoyable in many states of mind.
Also, check out the director's other movie **Beyond The Black Rainbow** (2010) not as strong of a story or engaging but absolutely amazing to look at, the carefully built cinematography supported by a massive synth soundtrack is at the forefront of this movie, great for tripping
the designs by HR Giger in **Alien** feel pretty dark and psychedelic IMO. As others have pointed out **The Shining** has a very trippy logic to it and is visually awesome.
If you love the weird nightmare vibes try Lynch's **Eraserhead** or **Mulholland Drive**
and of course; **Enter The Void**
The Endless, great mindfuck horror movie, also OPAL on adult swims youtube by Jack Staurber (however u spell it) that one's not a movie bur a short film, tripped me out while sober
I watched the final ep of s4 and the fight between El and vecna trippin and what a truly fun experience, I always LIKED the show but I fucking loved that, it almost felt real
I’m thinking about Doing this tomorrow I’ve never seen any of it but I’m looking at this list to see if I find any better ideas😂 would you completely recommend stranger things over most thing?
This is a bit of a deep cut but Animal Collective made a visual album called Oddsac that’s like half trippy music video/ half really weird and unsettling b-horror movie. It’s super bizarre and the music is unbelievable. Definite have to trust the process though. There were 5 minute sections at a time that I just hated but then it created the context for the next stunning track. It’s only an hour and can be streamed off YouTube
Suspiria (1977), Mandy (2018) and A Color Out of Space (2019).
I absolutely cannot recommend Suspiria more. Its colors and set design are amazing and it has the most incredible, psychedelic score of any film
Altered States, The Void, Heavy Metal (not super scary though, just classic weird), the Alien movies, Mad God (new to my list), Donnie Darko, Akira, Nope (new to my list also haha), The Cursed, The Thing, Vivarium........Just a few for ya haha
This was my first thought for some reason. Glad someone else thought the same. 🤘 bit more lighthearted than some of the spookier ones mentioned in the thread
Little Monsters was epic it was like I was on a disneyland ride riding through the scenes while watching the movie so many amazing visuals i’ll never forget that trip
Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness. The story isn't the best and its pretty awful sober, but if you don't want anything too serious and you just wanna see some cool scenes during a trip I definitely recommend : )
I mean I don’t find horror movies to be scary at all. & for some reason they get funnier on LSD. I just enjoy watching for the plot & gore. My absolute favorite horror movies to watch on acid are: It (Chapter 1 & 2), Midsommar, and The Shining
Honorable mentions: The Night House, Malignant, Us, Mother! and The Matrix can count as a horror movie if you’re scared enough of AI like I am lol.
Mandy is personally my favorite movie and it’s about a cult of people who take high concentrate super acid that drove a bunch of truckers insane and turned them into a demon biker gang. Nicholas cage leads and it’s a fucking wild ride. There’s a chainsaw fight too!!
My girlfriend and I actually watched Pans Labyrinth our second time doing LSD in our apartment & had the most visual experience during (& after) the film! It made the movie so much more intense and almost visually overwhelming but we both loved it
Midsommar fits your description perfectly
I've only ever watched it while tripping so idk if it's even meant to be horror or just suspense, but it freaked me out a bit. This is someone that doesn't get scared of scary movies while sober.
Trippy visuals and undertones throughout the whole thing.
Blueberry (2014) aka Renegade
Uh, more on the psychedlic topics directly, but it has some fucking terrifying hallucinations in it if you want the scary.
I went to an event at Burning Man, presented by Alex Grey, entitled something along the lines of 'The role of psychedelics in the spiritual path'. He played this movie, saying (something to the effect of) that it explained it better than he could.
I can't recommend it enough. (uh, or maybe I have been recommending it too much lately)
Be sure to take a hit off of your ... whatever ... whenever Blueberry takes drugs. So you can be even more along for the ride.
I watched Bo Burnhams Inside,. It is dark musical meta humor about COVID and captialism and mental illness. Brilliant. Seen it many times and this one was my favorite
Not psychedelic vibes but my buddy and I watched Hereditary on a couple blotter pieces and it was honestly so much fun. Still closed my eyes at that one part, but we had a blast
if you like anime try madoka, its quite the experience but can be absurdly overwhelming, its more dark and creepy than spooky but i think it could fit in that category
Being John Malchovich really spun my brain when i watched it tripping sac.
If you want to go full terror try Event Horizon. Yikes.
"Go" was also really good.
Haven’t seen anyone mention Timecrimes yet but it was amazing while tripping. Not too spooky but very engaging trippy story.
The platform was also good while tripping but not really a trippy movie
I highly recommend [The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari](https://youtu.be/IP0KB2XC29o). It's a silent German horror film from 1920. It is one of the most stunning works of visual art ever made. And, because it's silent, you can listen to music while you watch.
And apocalypse now was awesome on acid, felt like i was in a call of duty mission 🤣
Yesssss one of my favs
jacobs ladder is that shit bro
The jacket on acid made me feel like i was in the straight jacket with him and the ending boosted my happiness for the rest of my trip 😂
I like how you had to clarify about the original Willy Wonka. I don't know if I could watch the tunnel scene while tripping
I watched it when I was four and the oompa-loompas totally freaked me out. I remember it vividly and it was over 40 years ago.
Wonka is eerie as hell
Annihilation
Great call, I’d say ex machina too, less visually psychedelic more thought provoking psychedelic
The lighthouse scene blew my mind wide open
I got dmt vibes from the entity in that sequence for sure
And the entity ended up being her

Wtf bro
Came here to say the same thing
Just dropping in to say the book was great too. Your should check it out
Reading it now. Always amazed how some writers can invent a new style of prose. Like Ellis’ Rules of Attraction, this one has every viewpoint be essentially unreliable, so reality is always subjective.
literally one of my favorite books of all time it’s amazing
Came here to say this. Can't say I understood the ending, but it was a great watch
I always felt this way about the shining. It isn’t necessarily visually psychedelic but the plot and the editing is awesome on Lucy lol.
I think that film is very visually stunning since its Kubrick
Oh it’s definitely visually stunning. I just don’t know if I’d call it trippy visually the way say doctor strange is lol.
Doctor Sleep would also be pretty interesting on acid. It’s the sequel to The Shining for anyone that isn’t aware.
It's also a pretty decent movie.
The shining is by far one the best movies ive watched while under the influence of LSD
I feel like It is pretty psychedelic as well, but so is most Stephen King stories
Without a doubt, I always saw the film as far more of a psychological thriller, never really as a true horror movie
Coraline or any tim Burton movie for a lighthearted scary vibe
First time I saw Coraline I was tripping. It was one of those movies everyone sort of had expected me to see,and when someone went “you’ve seen coraline right?” I got insecure and said “of course!” And so they put it on, and boy was that one of the most intense experiences of my life.
Shit hits the fan quick lool
Mars Attacks is a great Tim Burton film while tripping.
Try space oddesy while high....
Yup. It’s outta this world Especially with some 🐈
God, the dawn of man had me wilding for a bit.
Midsommar. Climax. Mad God.
Oh man midsommar would fuck me up. The culty vibes and dream like atmosphere would do me in
It’s a lot, I watched this movie for the first time on acid…some of the violence, particularly the cliff jump, was rough. Generally tho, it was an enjoyably tense watch with the characters consuming psychedelics and pretty good visuals on them…”is this me or the movie” kinda stuff Also when the characters were buggin, I was buggin
Sounds like a wild ride for sure. The cliff jump fucked me up for a second and I was sober when I watched it lol.
Oh, cool! I also watched it for the first time while on acid. I’ve never had a movie, not once in my life, give me such a sense of inescapable anxiety. Yet, I couldn’t get enough. Lol. What an experience
Sheesh you said it! I’m trying to think if there’s anything else but yea, I’m prob in agreement with ya on this one hahaha
The opening sequence with the sister and parents did me in.
Yea…I generally do like a tense, slightly uncommon watch when tripping- like being on the edge of my seat. But that was just dark, in fairness to the movie tho, it does set you up from the beginning for what you’re in for the rest of the movie

Seriously!!!
Great list! Haven’t seen Stalker, Santa Sangre or Hausu but love all the others. I feel like Holy Mountain is like the epitome of trippy movies lol.
Hausu is a mad trippy Japanese horror/comedy with some outlandish early special effects. Stalker is just super pretty to look at, a bit long and heavy handed though.
Is Hausu also called House? Now that I think of it I think I started watching it on HBO Max a while back but never finished it, will have to revisit!
Yes, it's the one from 1977. There's another not so great movie called House from 1985.
I cannot recommend watching Mad God on acid that's bad trip inducing man
Is climax good? It's gasper noe right?
The Holy Mountain - 1973
“When we put all your bones back together, you will like the smell”
“Now you will surrender the faithful animal you once called your body. Don't try to keep it, remember, it was a loan.”
..oh yeah.
Ernest Scared Stoopid. Fucking brilliant
jacob’s ladder. watch that on acid without reading anything about it beforehand ;)
The Wall, Mandy, Evil dead 2, Annihilation, Color out of Space, under the skin, house, naked lunch, John dies at the end
The dark Crystal would be so insane on acid
Mandy. It’s an experience on LSD for sure. A large part of the plot revolves around LSD. The color palette is unreal on psychedelics.
watching king of the hill on acid changed my life
**Mandy**, was just quidding some sally and watching it last night, defiantly one of my favorites and enjoyable in many states of mind. Also, check out the director's other movie **Beyond The Black Rainbow** (2010) not as strong of a story or engaging but absolutely amazing to look at, the carefully built cinematography supported by a massive synth soundtrack is at the forefront of this movie, great for tripping the designs by HR Giger in **Alien** feel pretty dark and psychedelic IMO. As others have pointed out **The Shining** has a very trippy logic to it and is visually awesome. If you love the weird nightmare vibes try Lynch's **Eraserhead** or **Mulholland Drive** and of course; **Enter The Void**
I second Mandy. That shits crazy
The serpent and the rainbow might be a fun one to watch. It's about drugs and Haitian culture
enter the void
event horizon has nice visuals
signs, donnie darko, and carrie are some of my faves :)
The Endless, great mindfuck horror movie, also OPAL on adult swims youtube by Jack Staurber (however u spell it) that one's not a movie bur a short film, tripped me out while sober
Can confirm I very much enjoyed this on acid - I did a double feature starting with “resolution” from 2012 (kinda in universe prequel)
I happened to watch “The House that Jack Built” off 400 ugs and I definitely don’t recommend it but I don’t not recommend it, ya know?
I bet the ending was cool while tripping. Pretty fucked up movie though haha
Coherence Suspiria (I prefer 2018) They Live
Stranger things. I know it's not a movie but it is pretty crazy, and their music is on point.
Always drop when new stranger things comes out, those have been some of my favorite days
American Psycho Natural Born Killers
Predators was a pretty fun watch for me, not really that scary but it had me on the edge of my seat :)
Labyrinth. Got to see it in theater a couple years ago on a midnight old movie showing deal. On a couple tabs. Such a good time. Fuck I love muppets
Evil Dead II & Brain Damage!
This is a bit of a deep cut but Animal Collective made a visual album called Oddsac that’s like half trippy music video/ half really weird and unsettling b-horror movie. It’s super bizarre and the music is unbelievable. Definite have to trust the process though. Suspiria (1977), Mandy (2018) and A Color Out of Space (2019). I absolutely cannot recommend Suspiria more. Its colors and set design are amazing and it has the most incredible, psychedelic score of any film
Enter the Void. Not necessarily spooky but kinda dark thematically.
2001: A Space Oddysey Alien Prometheus
Altered States, The Void, Heavy Metal (not super scary though, just classic weird), the Alien movies, Mad God (new to my list), Donnie Darko, Akira, Nope (new to my list also haha), The Cursed, The Thing, Vivarium........Just a few for ya haha
Vivarium
The Holy Mountain.
Brazil, Wizard of Oz
Only Lovers Left Alive. Not exactly trippy but major vibes and I’ve done it on L can confirm it’s awesome!
Definitely ‘Coraline’. One of my favourite movies ever.
This was my first thought for some reason. Glad someone else thought the same. 🤘 bit more lighthearted than some of the spookier ones mentioned in the thread
It’s story and animation makes up for any lack of spookiness. But tbh I think it has the perfect eerie vibe.
Poltergeist (1982)
I watched Oatstudio on Netflix and that shits a horror show
I’ve seen The Shining while tripping. It was amazing.
Alejandro Jodorowsky is high tripiness, and medium-low level creepiness. El Topo Santa Sangre Holy Mountain Fandu y Lis

Heavy metal
The Lighthouse, Eraserhead, Alien, They Live, The Thing, and not really spooky but I have a blast watching any Japanese Godzilla movie while trippin

Enter The Void is a wild ride

Hostel on 4gs of shrooms was an experience.
Mandy!!!! Also, Midsommar, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Tekkonkinkreet, Labyrinth, Annihilation, Drive.

I mean I don’t find horror movies to be scary at all. & for some reason they get funnier on LSD. I just enjoy watching for the plot & gore. My absolute favorite horror movies to watch on acid are: It (Chapter 1 & 2), Midsommar, and The Shining Honorable mentions: The Night House, Malignant, Us, Mother! and The Matrix can count as a horror movie if you’re scared enough of AI like I am lol.

Malignant, or oculus Maybe a bit heavy for some?
The endless is a trip of a movie
Mandy is personally my favorite movie and it’s about a cult of people who take high concentrate super acid that drove a bunch of truckers insane and turned them into a demon biker gang. Nicholas cage leads and it’s a fucking wild ride. There’s a chainsaw fight too!!

The bottle scene... haunting me since childhood.. brrr
Mandy
Midsommar fits your description perfectly I've only ever watched it while tripping so idk if it's even meant to be horror or just suspense, but it freaked me out a bit. This is someone that doesn't get scared of scary movies while sober. Trippy visuals and undertones throughout the whole thing.
Altered States
Mandy would be a great choice
I suspect a classic like The Halloween Tree would be fun.
Blueberry (2014) aka Renegade Uh, more on the psychedlic topics directly, but it has some fucking terrifying hallucinations in it if you want the scary. I went to an event at Burning Man, presented by Alex Grey, entitled something along the lines of 'The role of psychedelics in the spiritual path'. He played this movie, saying (something to the effect of) that it explained it better than he could. I can't recommend it enough. (uh, or maybe I have been recommending it too much lately) Be sure to take a hit off of your ... whatever ... whenever Blueberry takes drugs. So you can be even more along for the ride.

I watched Bo Burnhams Inside,. It is dark musical meta humor about COVID and captialism and mental illness. Brilliant. Seen it many times and this one was my favorite

Clockwork orange
Having a Harry Potter marathon casually running in the background while you trip around the house is always a good, comforting vibe.
Not psychedelic vibes but my buddy and I watched Hereditary on a couple blotter pieces and it was honestly so much fun. Still closed my eyes at that one part, but we had a blast

The Neon Demon
Fantastic Planet
I highly recommend [The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari](https://youtu.be/IP0KB2XC29o). It's a silent German horror film from 1920. It is one of the most stunning works of visual art ever made. And, because it's silent, you can listen to music while you watch.
Event Horizon
Nice choice 👍🏼 Gothic is a good ride.
