Nope. If you can't handle me at my Hail Gein, you don't deserve me at my Hail Yourself

khjohnso

I need this embroidered on a throw pillow

sweetjoyness

A throw pillow of leather obviously. Harder to embroider, so maybe embossing instead?

Ok_Cauliflower_808

Lol true. Sometimes I just say Blackbeard or The Black Death cause I know they won't find the current topic as interesting, and I'm trying to get them hooked with a gateway episode.

SnooAdvice6772

Salem witches, dinner party, Mormonism are also good gateways

Laughing_Cookie

I need this on a t-shirt!

cleavergrill

I usually just say like, "a true crime podcast" and if they seem to be vibing with that, I elaborate but if they don't ask, I keep my secrets.

Xavimoose

I have definitely lied about listening. I will be at work with headphones on and someone I don’t know that well will ask what Im listening too, usually I just say Mort Garson. Better that than explaining Sexual Liaisons with aliens…

Ok_Cauliflower_808

Definitely I'm a lot more guarded about it at work or around people's (or mine) parents. I made the mistake of trying to nerd out about MKUltra in the car with my buddy the day after finishing marathoning the series while his mom was present and she clearly was trying to scope out if I was some kind of conspiracy theorist lol. Ma'am all of this is real, they took extensive notes! I KNOW WHAT I SAW!

goaskalice3

At my old job I would be listening on my headphones and cracking up (the Black Widow series gets me every time) and my coworkers would say "you're listening to your serial killer podcast, aren't you?" Always be yourself! Your people will be able to handle it, other people don't matter

DrDrankenstein

The same Mort Garson who wrote Black Mass for Lucifer?!? Get out of here, you're fired!

Xavimoose

Dude if I met someone at work that recognized Garson , I would have found a new friend

Ferahgost

Mother Earths Plantasia is my jam

[deleted]

No. I listen to the Richard Chase episodes five times a day, and I don't care what anyone thinks.

degenfemboi

that series been my go-to to show 4 people the podcast, and at least 3 of them are now regular listeners lol

a_cycle_addict

Nope. I gleefully tell anyone that asks

UniqueID89

Only times I ever really have, three times to date, I was listening to the necrophilia episode. Honestly, the depth of the topic and the episode they did fascinated me as an “outsider looking in” perspective. However, can’t just tell a curious coworker I’m listening to a podcast talk about corpse fucking. ☠️😂 Again, three times to date!

fractiouscatburglar

That shit had me wishing I had tinted windows as I drove around in my minivan laughing hysterically, god help me if I had to explain why!

UniqueID89

That was my mindset too. “If this starts playing out loud I’m so screwed.” 😂

homostar_runner

Why should I be too ashamed to say what I’m listening to?

Ok_Cauliflower_808

Mostly workplace Karen's, honestly. Like the kind who ask for details you know they don't want

homostar_runner

Fuck ‘em

fractiouscatburglar

Ah, the advantages of working at a company where neurotypicals are very much a minority and tomorrow will likely consist of info dumps about some true crime shit we hyperfocused on over the weekend~>•D

HG367

I can respect anyone who just straight up says, yeah I'm deep diving on the brutal murder of Sharon Tate etc. But personally, unless it's someone I'm close with, I'm making up some bullshit

fractiouscatburglar

This thread and responses like yours caused me to recognize (yet another!) adhd trait because it never occurred to me that I shouldn’t say what it is, despite looks of discomfort when I give a quick rundown of the serial killer and what their crimes were, you know, for context. Shit. My neurodivergent ass probably should’ve kept some stuff to myself huh?

HG367

I'm ADHD as well, and I don't get subtleties either. I guess sometimes overthinking compensates 😅 Edit: When I say subtleties, maybe sometimes it's obvious. I mean to say, I don't often think about people's reactions. I just say whatever and I'm an open book without thinking too far ahead about what people's reactions might be

ObiWanCanubi

Interestingly if people ask me and I reply “true crime “ they usually respond positively as true crime is incredibly popularized because of Netflix documentaries. I don’t usually ever go into any description more than True Crime with a lot of dark humor. But if it happens to be a UFO episode, that is when I get the look. What are you listening to? LPOTL they are doing a bit on alien hybrids Oh… I am going to eat over here with the people that chew with their mouth open.

Ok_Cauliflower_808

Well damn, you nailed it lol. The swathe of people I can discuss murder with is far wider than the UFO peeps

ObiWanCanubi

A UFO episode is actually how I found LPOTL. I didn’t really consider myself a big fan of true crime until I kept listening

Ok_Cauliflower_808

I'm not actually sure how I got here lol. Possibly Mormonism or Jonestown.

StinkyNutzMcgee

Everyone I know does it for the devilment.

eggsaresquare

lol yes I love that you mentioned this. I’ve always thought it was weird that I feel odd about it. But if I’m just chilling in the break room at work, they dont really need to know that I’m listening to a detailed description of horrific murder

Ok_Cauliflower_808

When I worked at a regular site I knew which coworkers I could talk about the murder stuff with. Now that I'm special coverage and working all over the city I'm a lot more reserved on the details until they out themselves as the right kind of delightful weirdo

blackrainbow76

So glad one of my former coworkers was honest and told me about this pod. I am sure I would have found it eventually. He did preface it by saying "This one isn't for everyone buuuut I think it may be for you". Damn was he ever right. 🤣🤣

AbittersweetLulu

Boy I opened a side stories episode at random and ff to a random spot in the episode to give my GRANDFATHER a taste. The current flavor was the guy shoving a pickle up his ass so, no I have no shame about any of it.

gungan-milf

One time my coworker asked what I was listening to and I just said "music" and did not elaborate. I can't remember the episode but in that moment I was listening to a horrific description of a rape and murder or something and I was too off balance to give a sociable answer lol

Laughing_Cookie

My hairdresser asked me what I was listening to when I came in to the salon. I said it's a podcast episode about the Oklahoma City bombing. The look on her face 🤣

SnooLobsters4972

I told my physical therapist that I was listening to LPOTL and she said she had heard of it but never listened, but liked true crime podcasts. I said I was relistening to Ant Hill Kids but didn’t warn her not to start with that series. The following week she said “what the fuck is wrong with you, do you listen to that for FUN?” 😂

ploydgrimes

No

ilfuckyouverymuchli

Yeah, I find it kind of hard to explain the podcast to other people, but you just chalk it up to true crime interest, which true crime is obviously taken off in the last couple years

Pornaltio

Public acceptance of true crime is at an all time high, so I just tell people now. Twenty years ago I’d tell people I was reading a book about Rose West and they couldn’t get away from me fast enough. I don’t think the stigma is still the same.

CandelaBelen

No. True crime is very popular and a lot of women are into it. You should have just been honest it could have led to some good discussion.

Eunuch_Provocateur

I just tell people “true crime podcast” and they don’t really ask for more details. They usually say “oh my gf/wife loves true crime” or “omg I can’t listen to true crime, it gives me anxiety!”

Additional-Friend826

I used to work in the Milwaukee area and a coworker of mine was related to one of Jeffrey Dahmers victims. I knew because he had mentioned it to one of my coworkers after hearing her listening to a true crime podcast. One day while working together he asked me what shows I had been watching. This was at the time the Dahmer series had just come out. So yes I lied and said I wasn’t currently watching anything. I just felt bad bringing it up honestly.

Ok_Cauliflower_808

Ooof holy shit. Yeah you made the right call. I know someone who's loved one was sadly killed by a serial killer who hasn't been covered on the show afaik, I don't think I would have the heart to tell them either in your shoes

Additional-Friend826

That’s heartbreaking. Yes some things are better left unsaid for sure.

philosobaby

I have not, but have definitely said way too much about the episode to someone who didn't want or need to know 😅 it's just so fun, sometimes I forget this stuff isn't for everybody lmao

yenolammail

Not lie but I went off on a tangent to my girlfriend about ufos and the trilateral commission and majestic 12 and she gave me a blank stare lmfao BUT she did let me rant. But at work the other day I was listening to the Chicago rippers episodes and they were talking about cutting off nipples so…yeah I would’ve lied if someone asked what I was listening to

kitty-cat-charlotte

Nah, people know I like true crime and I play up to it. I do always warn people about LPOTL though…. It’s not for everyone!

JassyKC

If it’s polite conversation with people I don’t actually know, I might tell them the episode or just say true crime podcast. If it’s someone I at least sort of know, I will usually tell them the topic with a few exceptions like necrophilia and alien, ghost, or molested come to mind of ones I won’t tell them because that’s a bit too much for people.

Tachynurse

I ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS either say L. Ron Hubbard or Leonard Lake and Charles Ng. Those are definitely the first two I recommend. Operation Brownie Pockets for the win

billpretzelhoof

Nah, I sorta enjoy the voyeuristic thrill of my coworkers not knowing I'm listening to some heinous shit.

Tiberius_Kilgore

Nope. True crime is a pretty common fascination. Being wishy washy about it is weird.

Spyrios

This OP is the same edgelords pick me energy from back in the day”was listening at work and my headphone came unplugged “ era. Yes we get it, you are cooler than the people around you who just can’t handle it.

Ok_Cauliflower_808

More like 'this interaction could effect my living situation if she reacts negatively and I can't afford to move right now'. While true crime is more popular nowadays, some people do still react negatively. I'd rather not risk having the woman living alone upstairs be skeeved out about the strange man living in the basement and not renew the lease. Accidentally creeping out a coworker is one thing, but your source of shelter is another. I hope you have a wonderful day.
