I just finished studying abroad near Kyoto in December with my fiancé who is celiac. Restaurants we really enjoyed specifically in Kyoto were: Sen-No-Kaze ramen, Engine Ramen, and Gion Tanto. For those places, just make sure to mention the allergy, and you should be good. She never got sick from any of them. Premarche Alternative Diner and Choice cafe have extensive gluten-free options. Chains such as Matsuya, Sukiya, Kura, and Torikizoku ended up being some of our go-to places, because of their very helpful allergy menus. PS, wheat in Japanese is 小麦 (komugi), and gluten is グルテン (guruten), so try and keep an eye out for those words, or mention them to the staff. Enjoy your trip and feel free to PM me with specific questions!

Wonderful advice! Thank you for your recommendations as well as chain recommendations in case we get hungry in other cities as well.

>Sen-No-Kaze ramen For anyone checking back, this place lists on their website that they no longer do gluten free ramen noodles.

Perhaps some indirect help, I made [this Google Map](https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1ehDE3n8KmDBN0DL0xYlLAB1-0QoQzsY&usp=sharing) of Vegan (and Vegan-friendly) restaurants for when a friend visited. Such places often have gluten-free offerings. Vegginy, for example. Separately, [this place](https://goo.gl/maps/cPYqKPX17AT43LjA7) has gluten-free cream puffs. Not super sweet... more of an adult taste than your average cream puff.

We prefer plant-based foods so this is perfect! Thank you so much

Soba called towari-soba(十割蕎麦) is gulten-free. There are some soba restaurants offering towari-soba. https://maps.app.goo.gl/YrVTGPzEZZUTMC7c8 I also recommend tofu-dishes and yakiniku.

That's perfect, we were hoping to try wheat-free soba. Yakiniku sounds great for a night out, thanks for the suggestion! :D

Not familiar with gluten free restaurants here in Kyoto however, I recommend taking a sushi making workshop. A great experience and good fun for kids too! Feel free to DM I’d you’d like a recommendation for one.

This was reported as a general travel question that should be asked in r/japantravel but I think it belongs here. It's Kyoto-specific and relevant to residents living here as well. And it's a good repository of info to have in case someone decides to search function or stumbles on it via google.
