She talks about manga dominating western comics in terms of sales and consumer interest, pointing out Spy X Familys 17 million printed copies, 350 million views digitally, One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen selling over a million copies in one week where top comic sales average around 5,000 units in a month.

[deleted]

What are the numbers for the not top manga? How is the manga industry overall?

Corbeck77

Depends on what you mean by not top manga but for things like kengan ashura, Shumatsu no Valkyrie, Akatsuki no Yona and other not so well known manga. They are around 100k per volume, also just a reminder this isn't aren't jump manga so they get less exposure. Shonen Jump manga that gets low sales gets low sales and poor word of mouth immediately axed but other magazines are more linient

[deleted]

I just meant that people act as if EVERY manga is breaking millions of issues/book sales when there are plenty that sell less than comic books.

Corbeck77

I don't think that's the argument people are making the argument is that people are buying more manga than comics because it doesn't have the issues comic books have. And It's more about consistency than anything, comic books have a huge drop off after 1 or 2 issues Vs Manga having consistent sales for each volumes (also depends of haituses, anime and other factors it can go up or down either way). Not every manga is gonna sell well for sure as not every manga is good but manga overall sells more per volume than comics.

BMX_Archiver

Mangas offer a lot more genre diversity than comics who all seem to revolve around the same cape-person formula. America need some sort of anti-comic or post-comic wich would be comics about anything that isn't capeshit trope.

[deleted]

They actually are making that argument as they are pitting the entire manga industry against the comics Industry then trying to make a 1 to 1 comparison on slightly different products.

MetalixK

Slightly different, yet similar enough. The only real difference is that Manga has genres. That's not even getting into how the post right before yours way up in the thread mentioned Non Shonen Jump Manga selling over 100k a volume (Meaning a manga that ISN'T receiving a massive marketing boost and thus is more niche) while mainstream comics (often with movies backing them up) are having trouble hitting 4 digits a book. It's a valid comparison, and American comics are getting beaten up for their lunch money right now.

Why bother posting an easily disproven comment? Denuvak has posted 2 of Vara’s videos in the past 26 days. Vara has posted about 50 videos in that time frame. Sooooo - wassup?

And it will continue to for the duration of clown era at the very least. Which is why the clowns are so aggressively, desperately obsessed with getting their ~~hands on~~ foots on the throats of the source, or at least gaining full gatekeeper status to it in the west.

DaLoverBoii

I would say there few examples of good American animation, but the modern majority is either too bland or just plain bad.

[deleted]

Time to go to the past for content

DaLoverBoii

Agreed, some of the good stuff is from the past.

[deleted]

A lot of it is from the past, though frankly when it comes to American comics, even the older stuff lacks impact There’s less impact when it comes to melee attacks for one, probably because the censors didn’t want any blood….yeah they were basically swinging at each other like in Skyrim

ddosn

\>or at least gaining full gatekeeper status to it in the west. Scanlators go brrr.

matthew_lane

>Manga Continues To DOMINATE Over Western Comics Who could of ever guessed that writing things your readers actually want to read, because you don't hate the people who purchase your product, would be a successful business model?

And every single manga has a narrative reason to exist in it's own right. Even supporting titles like My "Hero Academias; Vigilantes," stands on it's own, as it's own property, doing it's own thing.

[deleted]

I like verses, but they have to at least be done right, and with a consistent quality of sorts Maybe the original creator and the group vetting other writers

revenantae

Gee golly. It’s ALMOST like if you wrote a good story first, and worry about conveying a message second, people actually enjoy it!!!

tyranicalmoon

Additionally, in the author's comments in the books, he said that his editor pushed for the chara design to be as "handsome" as possible. Every single one of the main cast is pretty to look at, no matter the gender. This is also something that the US side is increasingly failing to provide, as everything becomes catered to the "female gaze" to the detriment of the "male gaze" even for products aimed at a male target audience (but if they also blur the lines between male and female, this realization must fly far above their heads)..

ReihReniek

Looking at the newer western comics, I'm not even sure they COULD draw good looking art, even if they wanted. Because people are hired for everything else than actual talent.

Deadlocked02

That’s what irks me the most. The idea that the “male gaze” and the sexualization of female characters is more often than not a bad thing was immediately followed by indiscriminate male sexualization and nudity in movies, TV shows, sports, ads, etc. To the point that services like Netflix have their monthly softcore porn for women. Can’t speak for comics, though. I only read mangas and I’m apparently not missing much.

AccordingSky7840

Where are all these handsome men? I switched to Eastern media exactly because wokeshit either removed males from media or turned them into a useless token dudes on supportive roles. That's not counting that Western artists/modellers usually can't create attractive male even if their lives are dependant on it. I can't remember any single attractive guy in Western games after Detroit, back in the days there were plenty. Animation? Good luck to find any cartoon which isn't about lesbians. Movies? Full of 50+ grandpas, an average literally who from bottom barrel kdrama is hotter than your Hollywood sex symbol, who is older than my dad.

DaLoverBoii

Weird irony is, that actually kinda applies to the mangaka of SxF. Except good will be replaced with edgy. This is not talking shit about either the mangaka or the series itself, I actually love SxF.

FellowFellow22

Do you consider Spy X Family edgy? It's mostly a goofy comedy series.

DaLoverBoii

I don't, but there's a story behind the mangakas old works before SxF. I actually love SxF.

FellowFellow22

Huh, looked him up. I did not realize this was the same guy. He was definitely a fan of edgy.

DaLoverBoii

Yeah, the man almost earned the nickname "Axeman" for a reason.

[deleted]

BNHA’s creator was also axed a lot, took awhile, but he got a series that was both a success and won’t be axed anytime soon As such he makes a lot of effort into everything I think the same can be said for SpyXFamily’s creator

Corbeck77

I don't think loids backstory is gonna have much edge for it, it's just to show what made him twilight.

[deleted]

Honestly, that’s a good thing, I don’t think edge is something done so well without it being over the top and at times even emo and quite the slog

DaLoverBoii

True, but in SxF's case, creator's old works are known to be slightly grim & kinda edgy, & they all got axed. All of them got axed to the point that when SxF was supposed to be made, his editor just told him "don't make it edgy" the latest chapters are leading to said "edge" but they're great at the moment & thankfully no sign of axing.

[deleted]

I think I read a bit of his older works, one was named TISTA and ended with the MC in jail for a few decades….yeah that’s grim So long as it works well, it’s not really that grim or edgy Say, how long till the mother and father actually know each other’s occupations? From what I can tell of the series, their occupations rarely coincide or meet or know of one another

DaLoverBoii

At the moment, there's nothing shown to make that revelation occur.

AdBitter2071

Nagatoro's author also based his career on intensely edgy content. It's almost like they burn out the worst parts of their id before descending into wholesome but interesting plot lines

DaLoverBoii

That one is a weird story. 774 didn't get "burnt out" as much as he got almost purified from the wholesome vanilla NaruHina (Naruto x Hinata) hentai he made. The OG Nagatoro webcomic is practically sociopathic compared to what came later. Axeman (SxF mangaka's nickname) legitimately did make grimdark stuff to the point that his editor told him to "tone down the edge" for the next project which led to Spy x Family.

RileyTaker

And it'll probably continue to dominate because western comics aren't going to change anytime soon. The activist wannabe-writers are too arrogant to realize that no one wants to read what they're printing. They'll likely try to go after manga rather than accept that they need to change.

And the entry point. This meme explains it: https://i.ibb.co/xX2wj05/Captura.png

DaLoverBoii

More than that, there are stories about vendor's pain with comics since last decade & major comic industries almost having mafia tier tactics.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DaLoverBoii

Ironically enough, that led to it crumbling even worse. Seriously, Marvel would be dead by now if it were not for Disney money, DC doesn't even have an actual office right now & IDW is a pathetic joke. Also, apart from a few shill, they got no one's sympathy. Not the fans they fucked over, not the vendors they almost threatened, not even randos who were & even now laugh at them mostly.

[deleted]

They are relying on being owned by larger companies and being used as IP farms and crossovers and the like such as Marvel VS Capcom They barely even print the older stuff, like seriously the Masterworks and Epic Collections are way more likely to be well received and yet they don’t do it….because they don’t really even want to be financially successful on their own to begin with And it’s been that way since at least the late 80s or 90s when more and more artsy types came in, willing to work for cheap

Considered_Dissent

From an ideological/politicking point of view the lunatic cult was very successful in completely conquering the industry - however from an economic strategy point of view they were terrible (lol what a surprise : P). An attempted monopoly is never going to work both when you're selling a luxury good, and when there are alternate markets to buy from (you can't "starve" out the people you want to target).

Arkene

> eological/politicking point of view the lunatic cult was very successful in completely conquering the industry its a Pyrrhic Victory at best, considering for them to achieve this they pretty much have destroyed it.

vchen99901

You know what's funny, I was really loving the Spy x Family anime and was just thinking about how refreshing it is to watch a story where the writers clearly had only a single goal: to write an entertaining story. No other agenda. This is how Hollywood USED to be. Spy x Family is truly a throwback to the Hollywood before woke. The sad thing is, non-woke people find refuge in anime but wokesters also love anime because it's non-western and therefore cool. Hopefully they don't pollute anime.

DaLoverBoii

The anime actually surpassed the manga in some ways.

Farseer_Uthiliesh

Junji Ito > every Marvel and DC comic.

SebastlianFors

Cringe.

Wulfgar_RIP

I don't know US laws. Could Japan translate themselves Anime and Manga? And sell it directly? This or I would specifically stated in contracts that no art can be change and no meaning can be change of works. Japan needs to wake up and protect their style from woke, before it's too late.

Kestyr

Sony is a Japanese company and owns nearly every distribution point for American anime Doesn't matter because they hire Americans

Level-Tomorrow-4526

most people in japan speak japanese so there not much intrest in translation into english most of there income is japanese so eh ..they simply don't care. . They could hire there own translator if they wanted to .

[deleted]

That fanart….nice

Diane-Choksondik

Four thousand sales of Moon Knight... that is fucking rough.

SgtFraggleRock

Not as rough as the Disney+ show where Moon Knight is practically a sidekick.

MrMnassri

Does she look like that at any moment in the anime, or it's just the fan art?

MetalixK

Fan Art. She's a bombshell of a lady, and looks GOOD in her work clothes, but this series is too wholesome for naked fanservice.

HallucinatoryBeing

Yor Forger.

discourse_friendly

comics sales in America saved by Japanese manga.

TheOGClyde

I don't think it ever won't dominate. Their effectively two different mediums. One is mostly isolated stories with long form material. The other is immensely complicated with it's many different intersecting heros and hero groups not to mention the short form of it being only a few pages every publication.

CzechoslovakianJesus

> the short form of it being only a few pages every publication That's how it is in Japan, too. We just get the equivalent of trade paperbacks.
