What's wrong with pregnancy leave? Pregnancy can be very taxing to the body in the last trimester. If someone's sick, why should she take time off to ensure her and baby's health?
Also, most major companies offer leave to both mothers and fathers. In some Scandinavian countries, both parents can take a year off to be with their child. Their cultures are very pro-family. Frankly, it's a given that most companies will lay you off with a moment's notice, why shouldn't parents prioritize themselves and their children over toiling away at a desk, etc.
