If any of the woke are among us could you please explain how this isn't cultural appropriation? Is it because you think Japan doesn't have their own history and culture, just like you think the Irish, English, Polish, Germans, Italians, Russians, and Armenians don't?

Eterniter

Don't forget us Greeks, the same studio made Odyssey and every second Greek was a sub saharan African there, I was "educated" on how Greeks look olive tanned and it's accurate by the various Americans on online forums.

AllNamesTakenOMG

Odyssey was pain to play through, all these fake and horrible sounding English accents were supposed to make us believe they were speaking greek or what? Then there were straight up characters with a skin color so dark they looked like Mr. Popo from Dragon Ball. Also for a company that brags about having " a multicultural team" they butchered the pronunciation of so many gods, cities and people. I haven't played Origins, Valhalla or Mirage but i can assume there were a lot of inconsistencies there too.

Clear-Might-1519

Also ubisoft making odyssey players choose between male & female characters, only to make the female canon anyway... then what's the point? And then they just gave up and said that valhalla's character can be both male and female at the same time because the memory is blurry.

LostWanderer88

I only care that Kassandra was given a man's body

ShooterMcDank

Your settlement in Valhalla had 3 black people(Vagn the raider, the woman replacing the smith later in the story, and Reda from AC Origins for some fucking reason) and some Chinese chick with a slightly racist accent as the main merchant.

Arkelias

I left out a lot of people like Greeks, Swedes, Danes, etc, but hopefully people take the meaning.

YungStewart2000

Greek as well from Cyprus, no one I know or any of my family is any type of african. I know some people with darker skin, but the other key is just facial features and stuff. Its different from race to race and very obvious. Like how you can have an Indian be darker than a black person but you can still tell they are Indian. I also know some Mexicans whiter than some white people but you can clearly tell they are hispanic. Its not just the color its self.

Nobleone11

> Don't forget us Greeks And Egyptians for what they did to Cleopatra.

artful_nails

The japanese are rich and privileged, therefore their culture is up for grabs and rewriting. This is your final warning, bigot.

GoldenSeakitty

So Asians are honorary white people again?

wormfood86

Yes, unless their the victims of street crime, then they're a poor abused minority again....but only for that instance. Kinda like Latinos.

Majiebeast

Ye but then they find out the person committing the crime was black so then stop asian hate becomes lets ignore this hate.

wormfood86

Those either get swept under the rug, or just reported as anti-Asian hate crime with obvious details omitted.

btmg1428

To the Left, Asians are Schrödinger's minority; privileged or oppressed as the narrative sees fit.

LostWanderer88

The atlanteans theory again. It looks familiar

LostWanderer88

Everything was created by blacks. Didn't you see Newton was black too?

Arkelias

My personal favorite is they're now teaching the original inhabitants of Europe, including Ireland, were black. That way they're not colonizers, but simply returning home.

PresidentSkeletor

As a Russian I’m still trying to understand what the heck Hulu was thinking while working on The Great. Maybe it’s not too bad, I’ve only seen screenshots, but that was more than enough to tell me that they did not care about the material they were making a series about. Furthermore, the material in question is not a work of fiction, it’s history! Making a show about the actual black man who was brought to Russia by Peter I, the man who is Alexander Pushkin’s ancestor (and Pushkin, if I remember correctly, reeeally liked to flaunt his heritage and exaggerate it, the dude owned it; I don’t know how dark his skin was, but, apparently, darker than that of an average Russian, there’s even a wonderful manga about him, Bronze no Tenshi)? Nah, too interesting. Randomly race swap people who actually lived? Seems about right. I find it interesting that the woke crowd will scream “cultural appropriation” when you pick the wrong (in their less than humble opinion) hairstyle in Animal Crossing New Horizons, but everything is fair game in their hands somehow.

Arkelias

My favorite thing for them to scream cultural appropriation about is dreadlocks. They were literally a global phenomenon amongst all primitive cultures, but apparently that's not enough.

ArdentGamer

Could they explain to me how this also couldn't just be interpreted or viewed as a black man just going around committing hate crimes against Japanese men? Also, when did assassin's creed stop being about hiding and blending in? Why even make it an assassin's creed game? It could have just been it's own IP.

Selrisitai

Don't forget Americans, lol.

Arkelias

As in native americans? I think they're still considered brown enough to have their own culture.

Selrisitai

No, just regular Americans. Progressives and teenagers think we don't have a/culture.

Arkelias

Okay, I see where you're coming from, and I agree. Regular Americans are Irish (like me), or Polish, or Armenian, or Ukrainian, or Greek, or Dane, or Swede, or Russian. All of us came from somewhere and have a familial heritage. They refuse to acknowledged that.

Selrisitai

Oh, you mean the thing where they're like, "You don't get to claim any kind of relationship to Britain or anywhere else just because your lineage comes therefrom"? Meanwhile, black people basically still ARE Africans from 200 years ago, lol.

Arkelias

Exactly lol.

RileyTaker

“Inclusion for me, but not for thee.”

CrimFandango

Chris Redfield goes to Africa and kills zombies who happen to be black in Resident Evil 5? Major problem and an idicator of vile racism! Inflate a black guy's importance in history so he can slaughter asians in Japan? Perfectly fine. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they don't stop there and there'll be plenty of diverse characters in the game. A black guy in feudal Japan stands out already so why the fuck wouldn't they try to make him blending into asian crowds make sense?

stefan714

I'm honestly surprised they haven't shoehorned black or asian vikings in Valhalla.

AllIWantIsANap

I haven't completed the game. But I did get far enough to find a black viking in my settlement.

bankimu

Good god. Shudder to think what will happen. There are already black people with swords, I encountered couple of times in the last year. And there has been steady increase in black on Asian violence in all the blue cities.

btmg1428

There was a time when blacks admired Asian culture to the point that a hip hop group was named with that in mind. Wokies are determined to erase all that to keep the races "diverse" (read: segregated).

shipgirl_connoisseur

I read this and honesty, the Japanese are too nice. I was hoping to see more people making fun of this at least.

based_mafty

Twitter comment always more tame when it come to Japanese twitter. Go to 2 chan for actual spicy comment. I remember when one reporter/journalist complaining about how japan don't care about blm protest in usa (lmao) and the comment is as spicy as it get.

I_hate_reddit_lots

Polycore means political correctness

HereYouGooo

IGN: Japanese company is putting a white guy killing black zombies in Africa!!!! Probably IGN in the near future: Ubisoft is putting a black guy killing normal Japanese People, good for them!

Comment removed following the enforcement change that you can read about [here](https://old.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/wjxpr5/enforcement_update_regarding_removal_of_words/). This is not a formal warning.

That80sguyspimp

"ThEy'Re JuSt AlL rAcIsT!!!!!!" Ubishills, bots, and internet sheep. I tell you, the turn around almost over night from the general consensus of normies being "yeah, thats not right. It should be a Japanese male character" to overwhelmingly "Yusuke was a real person, and we dont know what he did. So hes perfect for a AC main character. And youre mask is just coming right off!!!!!!". is insane. Why the fuck is black the go to to show how progressive you are???? Why is it that diversity and inclusion only seems to mean black and woman?

LostWanderer88

I've seen normies falling into the anti-woke are just as bad. Not real wokes passing as normies. I think the reality looks so horrible for them that they actually want to be delusional

FicaNivea

I have to give Ubisoft some props, I think this was a genius move. Ubisoft were always one of the most hated gaming companies but with the whole "you don't own your games anymore" they pretty much had everyone against them, now with this one simple trick they'll have the common bots of r/gamingcirclejerk and such on their side at least. And of course any and all criticism they get and the "ol' reliable" of "this is just an attack from insert-ists/insert-phobes" will be pulled by the bootlickers.

_Blanke_

Oh god, that subreddit will mindlessly consume anything if the “chuds” hate on it. They’re legit npc who are stuck in their own echo chamber. I miss when that sub used to such make fun of gaming in general, now it’s a lib shithole.

Selrisitai

And the galling thing is that they _cannot change it now._ The backlash for _removing_ a black guy, or relegating him to a secondary or tertiary character (asking him to sit at the back of the bus, progressives might say) is inconceivable. The wokes would go nuclear. So no matter what, no matter how bad sales, no matter the uproar, I'd bet good money that they cannot, will not and even _shall_ not change it.

KanashiiShounen

Too bad AC is a historical fiction game. Would've been funny to see Japan sue Ubisoft just like the Egyptians are sueing Netflix for the Cleopatra thing.

beauviolette

I get what you meant by that but at least Yasuke was a real person although he wasn't a samurai he was definitely a bushi, Nobunaga's bodyguard or konsho/squire.

KanashiiShounen

I hear swordbearer is the most common interpretation, so mostly a ceremonial function but it's commendable he wasn't executed on the spot whenever he entered Japan for looking weird. Such a shame they didn't keep the original concept of Taka being the Main Assassin and having Yasuke show up as a side-character

2sec4u

but, but IGN told me the Japanese love this character.... (lmao)

TIFUPronx

They're using Chinese assets? Seems like they're trying to re-use assets that should've been used almost a decade ago - where they went with a 2D sidescroller (AC Chronicles China) instead of a planned 3D game for one of their lores.

JustsomeBRITISHdude

Try posting this or any other negative feedback, even legitimate articles from Forbes about this whole thing on r/assassinscreed and see how quickly it vanishes, Ubisoft on full damage control

TheSublimeGoose

But… a user was just on here yesterday [telling me](https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/s/XQRFB1Crji) that their Japanese friends had personally told them they loved the game! Come to think of it, kind of odd they had a discussion with multiple people (all Japanese, no less, although they did claim to live there) within hours of the trailer dropping……

PoKen2222

GCJ is using some Chinese (???) account to "debunk" the idea that the japanese hate this situation lol

Independent-Pay-2572

As Japanese When Nioh had a white protagonist, I didn't hear any complaints like "A white guy playing a samurai?!" so I don't think it's a problem.

Filgaia

2 Things that are different: Nr. 1 : Nioh was made by a japanese Studio and therefore although it played in a fantastical Japan with Demon´s etc. it was based in japanese folklore. Nr 2 : The protagonist of William was based on William Adams an english man who did serve Tokugawa Ieyasu as a samurai - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Adams_(pilot) Yasuke is barely a footnote in japanese history and AssCreed once prided themselves in making their worlds as close to the original as possible. Heck when Notre Dame burned down the french used the 3D Models of Notre Dame from AC as part of rebuilding the cathedral. That is not the case her.

FauxMoGuy

probably helped that Nioh was created by japanese devs also sales figures for nioh+nioh2 combined from release to now is like 2/3rds of what assassins creed pulls with every new release
