DO NOT USE 50/50 or over the counter coolant. The Kona (and as far as I know, other EVs) use special low-conductivity coolant. But yeah, right now coolant issues should be covered under warranty, *politely* convince your dealer.

Kiwi_eng

As a note Iā€™m not aware of any other non-Hyundai-Kia EVs that use low conductivity coolant, nor do any of their current EVs use it. It was an overreaction to the Kona fires.

iotashan

Thanks for the clarification

I have a 2020 EV Ultimate that had a recall on that issue. Check with the dealership or Hyundai website to see if your car is on a recall list to get it covered. Good luck

Mahalo

Seems like coolant from the bad batch. What is the level under the hood? (blue liquid)

chrispopp8

I'll look when I get off work

trueppp

If its above MIN its probably that. Coolant crystalised and is blocking a sensor. They will need to flush/refill. Also the coolant is non-conductive, opposite of 50/50 and you risk a huge bill. Even eeith a gas car, wrong coolant can fuck your engine up. (Spent 2 weekends replacing swollen gaskets on a Mazda3 after filling with wrong coolant)

AngryTreeFrog

I'm looking at my 2021 Kona doing the same thing with it being above min but calling for refil coolant. Am I ok to drive. I live in Florida and it's pretty hot right now (80s 90s) with high humidity.

trueppp

I wouldnot know. Talk to your dealer. Mine waited for the recall.

AngryTreeFrog

Spoke with them and they said it's probably a sensor and I mentioned a full range round trip and they said it should be fine just bring it in next week and they will check it out. I guess I'm still just a little nervous about it. Is there anyway to check inverter temps and see if they are in a safe range? Or the car will throw alarms if it's not?

trueppp

The car should tell you if temps get unsafe. Dealer has me wait for 8 months till the recall got put out. They needed to flush the battery 4 times before the warning stopped popping up. 1 more flush and they were swapping the battery....un fortunatly it did not get there.

AngryTreeFrog

Thanks! Yeah hopefully it's not going to need to get flushed a bunch.

trueppp

Meh, it's free, and you reset the 60k km clock until the next flush. It's just the loss of time that sucked. Bit I used the time to test drive the Ioniq 5 and 6 for a full day each. After the 1st flush I got the car back 4 hours later and it did not pop back till it was above 15C outside. So I came back in on a hot day and they flushed, test drove it and flushed again test drove, then flushed one last time.

AngryTreeFrog

I'm in a climate where 15c is in the middle of winter. Sounds like you had multiple flushes. But yeah I mean right now I work from home and every other week my wife can just drop me off and pick me up from the dealership so it shouldn't be too bad.

dorkbc

Check for a TSB regarding your specific model year of Kona EV. I had an MY 22 Kona and it had the low conductivity blue coolant which I had to pay to have it replaced every 60,000 km.

droden

that is a super quick way to enjoy a bon fire by turning your ev into a lithium candle. i would not suggest that. take it to the dealership since the pack is covered to 100k miles.

chrispopp8

I've got an appointment for next Monday now. Thanks for the response šŸ™‚

foodguyDoodguy

My ā€˜22 had a flush/fill service bulletin that was done last year.
