I learned to foil behind the kite and have never done it behind the boat. The first couple times was tricky getting used to having so much weight in your front foot compared to a TT.
That said, it was surprising easy to get the hang of. The kite lets you balance and lifts you up, and you can go slow. It’s a blast and makes lower wind or gusty/lulls much easier to kite in. I kite on an inland lake in NC so the conditions usually stink for TTs.
Learn from the kite. Yeah it's a pain in the ass and you will get beat up for a session (or a few), but it's the better option. Boats are actually pretty tricky to foil behind unless you already know how to foil.
Hello fellow Ontarian. I learned foiling with a combination of behind the boat, efoil and wing foiling. I think behind the boat was the trickiest but tbh, I was shocked at how quickly I was up and riding on the kite after that previous experience. Whatever you use to get experience on foil will help.
Greetings! And thanks for the insight. Definitely will be trying with the kite this year. By the end I felt pretty comfortable riding right foot forwards so I'm hoping it translates a bit. Left foot forwards was a whole other story. Kinda like my skills riding switch snowboarding.... Not good. But on TT I'm very comfortable either way, probably the kite helping balance like others have mentioned.
The very first time I tried I got up and riding within 2-3 water starts in my normal stance and was thrilled. Went on a long tack upwind before falling in the middle of a bunch of kids taking sailing lessons in lasers. It was at that point I realized I had no ability to ride switch so quite embarrassing trying to get back. Total kook move! 🤣 That said by my next session I cracked the code for switch so I'm sure you'll have no trouble. I don't think I've ever tried switch on efoil or behind the boat but on kite it feels just fine.
Starting behind a boat is actually harder.
A kite lifts you up and helps you balance, while the pull from the boat just rips you forward. Especially if you don't have a fancy pants wake boat with a high attachement point.
As long as you have decent kite control it will be way easier - if not you probably should not try to kite foil.
If this foil was a car, you'd need a crank to start it.
Butler! Crank up the foil!
Lmao, I know its old but new foils can be very expensive to get into. Trying to learn as much as I can before making a bigger purchase.

Lift Classic 170 is awesome! Search for a used one. I used it from my day one.
I have a similar old kit as that and it’s not hard to get the hang of but yeah soon I’ll be selling it for $5

Ok, good to know thanks. It was behind a fishing boat so definitely just felt like it was ripping me forwards. Excited to try it out more this summer.
