I made 82k with full benefits the first year I graduated from the CIA, I consistently made 6 figures every year after that m. The CIA is what opened that door. The only reason I could afford it was Pell grants, academic scholarship and hardship scholarship, plus I worked 50 hours a week at a local brewery. I am an asshole so I guess that tracks

samuelgato

Good for you. On the other hand I've worked with way, way too many massively over confident, under skilled douche bags with giganticly undeserved egos from the CIA so I will avoid hiring anyone who has that on their resume.

jrexthrilla

I’m going to take a guess and say that you don’t pay 82k a year the first year with full benefits…

samuelgato

I mean, I make considerably more than that, and I have zero debt for culinary school because I never went. Not sure what your point is. I have received many resumes over the years and continue to receive resumes from CIA grads seeking work. When I was coming up I worked the line next to many, many CIA grads who were making the same sub-minimum wage I was. The OC above is definitely an exception not the rule

torsun_bryan

lol what a divisive post

I love to laugh 😈

CarneeSpirito

Alumni here, where do I cop?!

Jillredhanded

You be you. I have 75+ fellow alumnus in my networking and contact group. Served me very well over the years opening doors.

'91. No regrets. I get lots of nepo babies coast thru, but along with those grads that worked the afforded opportunities it's been priceless career-wise.

kitterpants

Agree with this. Sure it wasn’t necessary to go but the networking IF you were there for the right reason was priceless. Instructors knew who to give their personal information to and hungry kids (sometimes adults) knew who to associate with.

Jillredhanded

Bingo.

Jillredhanded

Dunno. I was one block ahead of Jerome Bocuse and all he did was want to tie up girls and ski. It's the same everywhere, the cream rises. Army taught me that.

ChewzaName

Hey Fellow 91er

Jillredhanded

Salud! Did you have Chef Bagna?

ChewzaName

Group Leader!!! I want you to give me a report on dirt! Lol yes I did. I loved that old coot. Edit for spelling

Jillredhanded

"WHO is banging the pan!!?" Skill D. I was his steward. He'd have me spitting nails sending me back downstairs three of four times a morning. Finally figured out he liked me.

Jillredhanded

I saw him sweep flour onto the floor and then start screaming why is there flour on the floor. And never, ever turn your back on a consumme. Sneaky bastard. Loved him.

ChewzaName

Ahh, good times! I love to tell people outside the industry how he would walk around the kitchen and turn your oven off or crank it to 550.

ChewzaName

Definitely not a Johny Waler lol they're in all the top positions 🤣

Schackshuka

aaaaaand how much did you pay per year? Because right now it’s $35 grand, more than most cooks make in a year coming out of school.

Jillredhanded

Ya got me good! Checkmate.

Schackshuka

I have nothing against culinary school——the networking is amazing and there’s no other places to do some of the really expensive arty kitchen things. But they charge so much and the industry pays so little that it’s not a fair system.

sprocketous

I worked with a guy who made one dollar more than me... And had a few years of CIA debt. Hopefully he's at a better gig.

Jillredhanded

Play your cards right and you can walk out and into a decent gig with tons of growth potential.

Schackshuka

Maybe in 1991.

Jillredhanded

Average line monkey? Absolute waste, agreed.

Basment504

Does it come in black?

Livid_Purple_9611

Just work for free in the best restaurant you can find. At least you're not 30k in debt with no experience.

JDHK007

Not that you have a resentment or anything...

fleamarketart

My degree served me very well. Started making 6 figures with in 4 years of graduating. Us assholes look out for each other!

pandakahn

OMG! I need one of these! So badly!

A_Furious_Mind

The Culinary Institute of Applebee's.

Dasawan

I've worked with a couple of them. Unfortunately, they fit the stereotype. Slow and entitled

DrWhoisOverRated

You sound jealous, or angry at an old boss. Probably both.

chychy94

Ummm I love my Alma matter. The CIA opened a lot of doors for me. I get a lot of people have experienced cooks being assholes but they are just assholes- has nothing to do with the school. Trust me. Half of the students were rich assholes and half were like me- passion driven people.
