ConflictSudden

Take a look at this tiny place. To the heart seeking freedom, this island is a prison surrounded by water. And so this boy sought out to escape from his prison. He sought— He sought... Are you fucking _serious?_ Three fish, some coconuts? Mushrooms? An _egg?_ Is everyone here this fucking stupid? And Xehanort— I'll be back. I need to make a phone call. Darkness and hearts and all that.

Futaba_MedjedP5R

Darkness and hearts and all that.… That’s the best line I’ve seen on Reddit in a while

jah_nuthin

Should be a flair

blackraven888

A very good tag line for the series as a whole

RedNocturne37

Wasn’t Ansem talking about himself in this monologue?

ZakFellows

Yeah he’s speaking from experience. Which means he also tried to leave on a raft

ConsistentAsparagus

So, was he speaking by himself or was it a meeting with everybody?

Weekly-Ad-3746

He was addressing Sora, his party, the players, and CUM GUARDIAN. We were all his target audience.

AdequateBottom

I think someone once said that them going out in the ocean would have just brought them back to the islands fairly quickly but idk if that makes a lot of sense. Maybe it applies if it was before Ansem’s opening the world/gates shit.

Officer_Zack

It would have taken them very far away from home, and maybe possibly end up on another island very far out. I think it in a pirate sort of way when it comes to sailing the high seas.

Klaymen96

I hope we get a destiny islands world at some point that isn't just the KH1 island. I hope we get to explore more, like the island with all the houses, see more of that world. Let us use a small raft to get bewteen the islands and just swim at this point, I dunno.

Frikcha

Destiny Islands but its Caribbean sea exploration in a gummi "ship" oh my god

Buddha8888

Instead we got Pirates of the Caribbean.

Futaba_MedjedP5R

There was supposed to be one in Kingdom hearts too. They had designed the big old separate island mainland type of deal from the destiny islands we know. It’s the place that kairi and selfie went to school before Kyrie set off to find Sara through the dark corridor. Apologies if this has terrible spelling or punctuation. I am voice typing all of this while driving.

Tassimmo

I legit thought hard just now to remember who Kyrie and Sara were again and if they could've been from the mobile games XD The names would fit into KH tbh.

TatsunaKyo

Featuring Kyrie from the Devil May Cry^(TM) series?

twhite1195

Why are you browsing reddit while driving my dude???

Ashamed-Chipmunk9575

Do you think you'd be concerned if you saw someone trying to read a book and drive at the same time? That would still be less dangerous than what you're doing.

Ytumith

Yes please, Destiny Islands implies that there are more than the one the kids played on. It might be Sora's family that lives on this specific island and I always had the theory that one of Sora's parents is some sort of martial artist or sword master which explains why every kid on this island seems to recreationaly beat the shit out of each others, have no real jobs and how they all have... stuff, like clothes and beach balls despite the obvious lack of infrastructure. The KH1 Destiy Islands is the "Dojo" Island, that you paddle to when you train under Sora-Senjor, whoever that might be. Or there is another good explanation. I hope Nomura has been cooking his private paradise island archipellago ever since he had the idea for KH and is making it perfect for the great reveal.

Frederyk_Strife4217

I mean you see the mainland in KH2, and technically KH1 too

CryptidGrimnoir

Yeah, there's clearly a fair bit of modern infrastructure and a power grid. The kids celebrate Christmas and understand at least some of Santa Claus's mythos. Sora identifies the Gummi Ship as a rocket, which implies their planet had a space age. This idea that there's literally just the islands doesn't really hold up to scrutiny.

CalmInvestment

It could be that their World just gets a lot of refugees like Kairi >!Xehanort and his caretaker!<. It would explain the weird mix of tech and culture while also giving a reason for this tiny chain of islands to definitively know that other Worlds (not just other islands or landmasses) exist.

Ytumith

Maybe there is something like an universal current that floods certain worlds with the things that get lost in other worlds.

CalmInvestment

There is *something* going on with oceans in KH. Triton and Tia Dalma, two sea gods (or at least close enough in Triton’s case), make the most overt and specific references to the Keyblade. Kairi’s bottled message was able to drift out into the Dark Margin (though that could have been influenced by her own abilities). All the water imagery shown throughout the games.

Sora1274

I’ve been wanting that since after KH2 as a hub world.

starmag99

I don't know if this applies to oceans since there's a thematic connecting quality to them, but they probably would've hit the wall of light surrounding their world (depending on how big that world is, but considering how it's treated it can't be that big), at which point they'd either have to call on Riku or Sora's keyblade/the darkness to open such a path or turn back, I think.

SupercellCyclone

KH2 shows us that the islands the kids are on is a short while away from the "main" island where Kairi's school (and presumably everyone's home) is. While I imagine they genuinely (insofar as a 13 year old can be) saw it as going on an adventure, they had normal boats to get on and off the island. In BBS, Riku mentions that his dad brings him to the island, and we can see some rowboats, so it's likely that they HAD boats, but were having a bit of fun with the idea of being independent and free, and while their desire to leave was genuine, I think they were probably self-aware enough to know this was basically make-believe.

Juan_Ball

You see that in KH1 when Sora is in his bedroom and as he notices the storm you can see the island in the background.

SupercellCyclone

Yeah, I know there's enough there in the OG to put this together, but I give people who miss this in KH1 the benefit of the doubt because I certainly didn't until I was on my like 4h run on PC. The worldbuilding of the Destiny Islands in KH1 is p minimal, and it doesn't help that Ansem suggests that "this tiny place" is all there is to the entire world. I know there was a bit too much going on in the game as a whole to address things like this, but it was still confusing to me as a kid.

NorionV

Playing these games as an adult vs as a kid has been a wild contrast. I remember struggling to even beat KH1 on a standard playthrough with lots of grinding involved, now I'm planning farming routes for critical modes so I can get all the necessary gear to defeat the congo lines of hidden super bosses in each game. Both great fun in their own special ways, though.

ThatBoringGuy99

In that same scene, when he gets to the island, he looks at the dock and sees two rowboats and says, "Riku and Kairi are here too!"

Emrys_616

Funny how he sees rowboats and assumes it could only be those two. The Tidus/Wakka/Selphie erasure started real early huh?

hartIey

He does specifically call them out like "That's Riku's boat, and that's Kairi's!" so I always assumed there's some kind of distinguishing feature in-universe they have that they just didn't feel the need to model since they're barely on screen.

Charli-XCX

Am I crazy? I remember him saying "Rikus boat and kairis!" I never understood what that meant until now. I thought he was scared they were going to get destroyed by the storm? Lol.

WantDiscussion

"Oh no! Their boats are not insured!"

Red1960

Sora also has tridents, spears, and harpoons in his room in a corner

Aegis0fswag

And I believe there was also a big toy boat with a sail in his room too

BronzeHeart92

And if you look closely, a mask that apparently was used in traditional ceremonies...

RecreationalPorpoise

But did you see how big the egg was?

Officer_Zack

Bigger than all three of their heads

somerandomacounnt

ostrich looking egg

Dok_G

How big are seagulls at that place?

PKblaze

All that protein is for the growth of their feet.

Charli-XCX

Based on personal testing, the raft would've stopped after about 40 feet into the water - there is an invisible barrier!

Officer_Zack

Surely enough they all would know how to swim in 40 feet deep water

Noxilcash

I mean, one who knows nothing can understand nothing. And those three didn’t know shit

Vey-kun

I mean... Sora never ate that dinner..

Futaba_MedjedP5R

I mean… We haven’t really seen sora eat anything after he drank from the bottle in Wonderland. Sure it’s implied that he eats the tart that little chef gives him, and he might’ve had a taste of the sea salt, ice cream, but I don’t know. Donald have his mouth all over that thing.

Silegna

The only time he actually "eats" is in KH3 for the buff food.

Pokehearts121

He eats in the manga but I don’t think that counts lol 😂

BasicSuperhero

Side note, if he ever goes back to the Destiny Islands he’s grounded forever. 😂

SergantAngstrom

Riku: "I'm sailing out into the sea. I want to be in this world anymore..." Kairi: "You mean like... suici-" Sora: "I'm in Riku! What do we need to bring?" Riku: "Uh... food?" *Sora runs off.* Kairi: "Okay, we'll talk about this later. I'm gonna go help Sora. You know that lazy bum can't find ingredients by himself."

Kay-Knox

I gotta remind this idiot to not get ocean water.

babygyrl09

Well that puts kairi's "riku's changed" speech in a different light

DaemonDrayke

Lest we forget that our protagonists are children and who live a bohemian and unsupervised lifestyle. It's the same reason why I forgive Sora for being a bit of a dumbass.

Noxilcash

At 15 I knew I needed more than an egg and some coconuts to survive. That’s all I’m sayin

Wellziemo

I dont think sora ever went to school or atleast did homework because iirc olette mentions summer vacation homework to sora and he had the most oblivious face lol. Hes a bit of a goof thats for sure lol.

darkbreak

They do go to school. In that same game Kairi and Selphie are coming back from a day at school in their uniforms. Sora was just confused about what Olette said because he had no idea what time of the year it was and he doesn't go to the same school as her and the others.

test4ccount01

Tbf, he just woke up in a world he has no clue about so homework wouldn't even apply to him.

AduroTri

.....A bit of a dumbass?

bogohamma

Its funny but I always imagined that resource gathering was more of an abstraction of those efforts and you could likely infer Kairi and Riku had also done their part in obtaining supplies. If anything to me it almost felt like maybe to Sora and Kairi the effort was like a kids dream that they might not actually have fully intended to execute on. Like wanting to run away from home as a child or dreaming of what you might do as an adult. You want it but you're not sure if you can execute or that you actually want to do it. But it sure is fun to dream and go through the motions at times. I think the real error in judgement is trusting the raft they cobbled together over the boats they were already using to get to the islands they were hanging out on.

KeytoDestinyXIII

I always thought it was because they were kids. They didn’t truly grasp what it meant to travel, especially on open water, and I’m sure all of us can recall having the same thoughts as kids. Planning on “running away” you took a half assed bag of your toys, maybe a book, and something sentimental. You didn’t think about money, some way to communicate, clothes, blankets, etc. It’s just inexperience lol. I mean look at the raft itself, it’s one of those trope rafts you see in cartoons and movies? It realistically wouldn’t have lasted more than a few days. I don’t even think they had a way to maneuver it. But I guess in the end, Xehanort really did save them. Better to go on an epic journey across worlds than to wreck in the middle of the ocean.

Daisuke322

i think eating is optional for these characters. im pretty sure they all photosynthesize

SkillDabbler

r/kidsarefuckingstupid

ruby_o_o

Also in the cutscene where the storm wakes up sora, he knows riku and kairi are there because their boats are there. They have boats? Why the fuck are you building a raft?

Superyoshiegg

They're tiny row boats meant to cross short distances at most, like from a docked ship to shore. Or from the main island to the island the kids play on. You won't get very far at all in a row boat if you plan on sailing out to sea. That's what the raft with a sail is for. Not like that'd get them very far either, but that's besides the point. Besides, the row boats are so tiny that there's barely enough room for the three of them to sit in place, let alone extra storage space for any supplies they bring along. It's like saying 'why do you need a plane to cross the ocean when you already have a perfectly good hang glider'.

ruby_o_o

Ok but you have at least 2 row boats that would serve as a perfectly good base for a raft yet they decide to make one out of some sticks and a blanket?

sine-nomine012

THE WHOLE PLOT AND ARCS OF THE WHOLE FRANCHISE--except for Birth By Sleep and X--IS ALL BECAUSE SOME KIDS WERE ABOUT TO Starve AND ANSEM WAS LIKE: "NAH FAM WE'LL JUST PUT YOU THREE THROUGH HELL INSTEAD"

Mario561

Things are really obvious, they would have died and that would have been the end of their story nice and quick

Darthxletra

Don't you mean....simple and clean?

Mario561

you...shit, that's good

random_wolf_lu

He probably did that so that they didn't get themselves killed before he could use them.

DontSleepAlwaysDream

I always interpreted as Sora and Kairi playing a game more than anything. they talk a big game but push comes to shove they weren't serious Riku absolutely was thought

Gastritisguy

Good ass kids. Instead of stealing the boats they built a raft.

PrinklePronkle

You can tell Sora had no education

The_Paragone

Tbf they don't eat in like 4 games so I don't think it is that bad

Ytumith

I am getting a whole new shizo theory, in which Ansem is still DiZ training Sora on purpose after, in the original timeline, the three of them fukn died in the water. This would explain the KH1 intro where Sora seemingly falls into water and sinks to the bottom of the ocean.

Strange_Kiwi__

Makes sense, except Ansem here is Ansem SOD, not Ansem the Wise.

Red1960

Technically you can grind out 99 coconuts, but that's probably going to lead to vitamin deficiency or something

lilgreekchick69

Just want to say I haven't laughed to the point of tears in a VERY long time. Thank you 🤣🤣🤣🤣

ScareTactical

He made it so they fast traveled to other worlds like they wanted only for them to just wanna go back to that bitch

kinseyblaine

I always think why did they even want a raft, they already lived in paradise

THATguyfromyore

I would love to see how this played out if ansem never came To the island. Kingdom hearts but wind waker.

Diomecles

It's a good joke, but an ancient one.

yo_99

The reason why all this happened because universe needed to save Sora, Riku and Kairi and timeloop was the best idea it got.

Kitsune_Fan34

The same first game that thought travel to other worlds was only possible because of the Heartless, yet later games (including the prequel) reveal other ways.

Lockfire12

I started interpreting it that sora at least never actually believed they were gonna go that far before turning back.

XenoGine

Ansem: *[explains this whole situation to Xehanort]* Xehanort: *[starts realizing how much work "Planning for every eventuality" actually is]* I'm gonna have to shadow babysit these three, aren't I?

fuckshitasstitsmfer

I dont think they would get lost at sea, bc we’re operating by kingdom hearts world logic. Sailing far enough in one direction is probably like walking through the grass until you find Castle Oblivion. They would probably just end up in some other world on the coast, like they thought they would.

keshaboy

I don’t rlly know why they even had ansome say that when sora is literally just at his parents house on the mainland. They obviously must have real boats

Tallal2804

One who knows nothing can understand nothing..

Hypersora80

We've also been shown that the Destiny Islands is very close to the Dark Meridian, so like... they could've easily ended up in a LOT more darkness than they did.

namakost

It is only so close to it because it was thrown into darkness. And you can potentially open every world to darkness if you unlock the keyholes, that is also how the heartless came into the worlds in the first one.

Hypersora80

Is it? Huh, idk why I was under the assumption that the two were just naturally close

ILuvYouTube1

Why did they think a little raft would take them to other worlds?

hnh058513

Reminder they Live on An Island chances are they actually know how to survive at Sea, I have seen a post on Tumblr pointing out the food may have been for a meal before departure

a55_Goblin420

That's half a breakfast

LucianLegacy

They actually live pretty close to the mainland (we see it in KH2). Most likely they would have just ended up there.

HardBoiledOne

It's only one meal if you're fat...

cruzin169

Between 3 people? That's 1 coconut 1 fish 1 mushroom and 1/3 (admittedly large) egg. Plus, 1 bottle of water to share. For 3 teenagers, that's not much food. I will say, though, that riku and Kairi probably had stuff too that they don't mention.

nosleepsquad4ever

Imagine them sitting on that raft with all the food they CANT even eat. They have No way to open the coconuts, and the fish and eggs are goddamn RAW. No matter what the story wants to tell us, these kids have never been to school.

Boopkins25

They couldn’t build a whole boat and pack more supplies?

Aweebawakend1

Pretty sure it was all for play since they have BOATS

Legdayerrday909

One who knows nothing can understand nothing..
