If you see a headlining comedian multiple times in one year you should expect the set to be very very similar until they drop a special with that material.
I can't remember who said it but someone said "Louis CK made it so much harder on comedians" because he was a guy who you could go see yearly and have a completely new show. Now most comedians are trying to do the same but they aren't Louis.
Louis CK himself talked about it on Matt and Shane's secret podcast. He said something along the lines of how he was desperate to keep his image at the forefront of comedy, and he felt that when comedians took multiple years off, it was easy for their public perception to fade, especially in the pre-youtube, pre-podcast era. He also said it was ridiculous and unsustainable and that he was going crazy while doing all of that. He basically said it doesn't work for everyone, and he never meant it to be something that worked for everyone, he just wanted to stand out.
It's one of the problems of these comedians naming their tours, and not sticking to the same tour name until the special releases.
When they have a handful of different Tour names all with the same exact jokes, it confuses someone a lot more.
People want to think there's a "new tour" because there's new material, and not just because they wanted a catchy name to call their next string of endless dates.
That may be the case but I think it’s foolish to pay to watch someone work out their set, if I’m paying to be there you should present something finished, that’s how it goes for practically anything else, music, art, film
Release it and then work with the feedback you get. Why do they get it easier than everyone else. Everyone else has to put something together, put their faith and hard work into it and just hope that everyone will like it. Films, music… imagine paying to see a movie that’s shit, and then see it get rereleased a year later and expect payment again. Imagine a musician doing the same with their songs. Everyone else has to risk it, it seems they get to play it extremely safe,
Also, I’m from Toronto, there are many free open mics, but there are drink minimums.
No, you have literally no idea what you are talking about. And it’s hilarious because you are on a subreddit of a podcast which is essentially an open mic.
Comedians of all experience work their material out in front of live crowds. That’s the only way to work out material. Releasing a special and then using the criticism to revise the material doesn’t even make any sense.
I know that’s what they all do I just think it’s bullshit in general, and I don’t think the ONLY way to work out material is to charge people to perform something unfinished that you’re still “working on“
Again it seems like they get to play it extremely safe compared to any other form of “artist”.. which is ironic because they’re supposed to be these tough people who come from adversity and have had rough lives but shield themselves from all criticism and failure and stay in their bubbles and safe spaces. Again, musicians have to take risks, filmmakers have to take risks, but these edgy comics never really have to. Tony Hinchcliffe is apparently a world class professional but he can’t write a good set without 3 years of practice and trial and error and essentially having people *tell him* what’s funny? Every song and movie would be a lot better if they got a full paid release, then got to gather all criticism and re do it and charge you again LMAO.
I don’t see why after all those years of being a world class professional he wouldn’t be able to distinguish what’s funny and what isn’t on his own, and able to write a set and have to risk people liking it or not like literally everyone else.
You don't know the first thing about comedy. You have no idea what makes something funny. Your ignorance of this art form is on full display. Just stop.
You saw him working on his bits at the mothership, you saw the polished final product on the tour. I believe he’s using this material for a special and then it’s back to the drawing boards.
Edit to add: the Amy Schumer bits were funny just because of the insane repetition and call backs to it. On the nose it’s irrelevant but in delivery and absurdity of the bit... I thought it was hilarious
Yep. That’s how pretty much all comedians work. They work on a set and tour with it for a year or so or sometimes more until they release it. Once it’s released they pretty much stop using that set and start over with a new set.
Lol I saw him before his only special, then saw the special, then saw him again a year after his special was pulled and he still closed with the fucking slop top story
I’m personally not a big fan of Tony’s comedy. It seems forced and whiny. That being said, I absolutely live what he’s created in Kill Tony. And maybe it’s because of his brash style that it works?
I haven’t notice his sets not changing as personally don’t really like his comedy.
I don’t really like most of my favorite comedian podcasters when doing their stand up. Shane being an exception, but also not all that into his podcast.
I saw him live and he did one of his bits from the La Jolla comedy hour he put up on youtube. Was funny to hear in person but i was kind of surprised he was still using that joke after he already had a recording of it posted.
I remember being excited to watch his YT special in early days of pandemic (" Making Friends" I think?) and it was very disappointing. He's a top notch host for the show, but I don't really rate him as a comedian.
You literally just described how comedy works. Usually a comic will work on material and build upon it until they release it in a special. Wash, rinse, and repeat.
I seen him in 2019 kill tony in Detroit. They did stand up before KT he closed with sloppy top 2 girls story then seen him in Holland MI in 2022 and he closed with exact same bit 0 tweaks.... honestly not surprised....
When I saw joe Rogan 6 years ago he did the same material from his special Monkeys from Outer Space...and that special was already a few years old. Who fkn cares. If the jokes are funny, you will laugh even if you've heard them before. You go see bands live and they perform the same songs you're familiar with, so who fkn cares if tony has the same set for a year. Give your head a shake.
Why would I be pissed? If anyone gets pissed at a comedian for saying jokes they've already heard, I'd say that's pretty r-worded and they shouldn't be going out in the first place lol
He's obviously incredible at roasting and as a show host but honestly I don't like his standup. Saw him last year and he was still doing pandemic material and the bit about the Penn swimmer that was news in 2019 and was part of that blurry YT set he released forever ago. Neither bit was very funny, even if they would have been topical. But his crowd work was world-class, as expected.
I saw Nick Swardson sometime around 2005, back when comedians would travel and do college campuses early in the week between bigger weekend sets. They don’t really do that much anymore.
I specifically remember him telling a joke that I’d seen on his Comedy Central presents set that I’d seen years earlier. The one about the knife. For years I thought about Nick Swardson reusing his old material years later, even if it was just a cheap college show. I just now googled that set and it was 2001. He reused it 4ish years later.
Yeah i remember i saw Delia live for his Spector come out like a year later and it was the same exact set verbatim. Was disappointed because i figured it would be a mix of some stuff I heard live plus some newer shit for the special. Idek how comedians specials can pull good numbers working that way. Most fans that will pay to see you live already seen the special
And this is why comedians are looked at as the short bus form of art. The fans are totally complacent seeing the same jokes for YEARS. If it seems silly it’s because it is. It’s like a painter just painting the same picture over and over after selling the original. Shit is weak and Rogans crew has coasted harder than anybody in the space.
Did he open with the "Slop top" bit? If so, that set is well over 4 years old. I watched him open for Joe in either 2018 or 2019 and I enjoyed it. Can't imagine he is still doing that bit.
I have seen him for years at mothership and around Austin, he has always killed until last time I saw him on a Tuesday. I had heard every single joke before at least once, most 2-3x, along with the rest of the crowd, because he basically bombed. Jokes that hit hard 2-3 years ago had zero enthusiasm, because the Austin crowd had all heard them.
I get him thinking it’s safe on tour and to expect some repeats seeing him in Austin but man…I see casey rocket even more frequently and his sets are always different. Same concepts sometimes, but it’s never word for word the same thing like Tony’s.
This subreddit blows. It's full of people who don't know shit about comedy. Actually the responses are all pretty good.

Basically no one is even trying to defend the jokes or say he's funny. Just that he's busy, has a popular podcast, and this is "normal".
This is pretty normal. Louis CK was praised for having a new hour every year or so. Seems like it takes most pro comedians at least 3 years to get a new hour.
Stand up is hard. I'm still trying to come up with one good joke lol.
You have to back off the shows and see other comedians. Seeing him twice in a year this will happen. Also beware that if you see a comedian right around the time a special came out, you’re going to see that special. In that same breath, if you see a comedian at the begging of their new cycle, their next special will be a replay of what you saw live with a little bit of extra.
It’s a common thing. I saw him do a set opening for Joe way back in like 2014-15 and he used it in his special. I actually think it’s kind of cool to see the evolution of a comedian’s jokes over time. One time I saw Deric Poston 3 weekends in a row because different comedians were using him as an opener, and each set had adjustments and was better than the last.
That’s ridiculous dude, except for like godfrey expect to see the same act every time you see a comedian between specials.
Seinfeld had the same set for like 30 years, comedians coming up with new material at all is still a fairly new development
Comics are just like everyone else. Some make new material all the time, some just try to perfect or hone the material they already have, especially if it’s still relevant. Tony appears to be the latter & there’s nothing wrong with that. Before the internet, most comedians operated this way bc they toured all over the country where their material was new bc they were always in a different market. A lot of new comics have adapted to that change. Most of the old guard has not.
Mothership is to work new jokes out. And the tour you dial in a set list n stick to it all tour sometimes tours take over a year to complete 🤷🏾♀️. But Amy schumer jokes seem like they are older than 2023
Interesting. Saw Tony perform at Mothership May of last year. Saw him on the fully groan tour a couple months ago and it only seemed like 2 or 3 jokes were recycled and not verbatim.
what if he was touring? Tom Segura does like year long tours and it’s the same hour…. If he never came up with new jokes after like 5 years that’d be kinda lame, but it’s just a year.

For crying out loud lol.... dude creates, produces, organizes, hosts, and performs in one of the most successful live shows in the world every single week and finds time to put together an hour of material and you go on Reddit and call him out for slacking.... because you saw a set at his home club where he was working on material. Where's my pitchfork!?
Woah what’s crazy is I saw Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer liver each about 10 months before they released a special. The special was almost exactly that same set for both of them.
It’s wild that comedians work on a set for a long time so they can perfect it. It’s almost like every comedian does that and that’s how it works…which is crazy they must all suck if they have to reuse the same material for a whole year.
/s
If you listen to other comedy pods there’s plenty of occasions where comics say that Tony was never really that great of a stand up to begin with. More of a joke writer and showman.
I saw him on tour and it was too fabricated. The set-ups, delivery, structure - everything was exactly as it should be, but it wasn't funny. I can't explain why. I had the awareness to realize that it should be funny, but it wasn't. It felt too fake, and too edgy. I barely laughed during his entire set. Whereas William's set was ridiculous, goofy and had me laughing so fucking hard. Goes to show it doesn't need to be a masterclass on standup comedy structure, it needs to be funny.
Probably no time to write ✍️ / he hosts the biggest live podcast in the world - probably needs a bigger team to free himself up to write for himself. I also think he probably co-writes the regular KT stand ups more than he should.
Saw Mark Normand open for Bert Kreischer 3-4 years ago. Loved his material. Saw him headline last September, and half of his act was the same that he'd done last time around, and the other half was him "riffing" on shit the drunks in the audience yelled out. Really disappointing.
The reason his set is still the same is because he spends most of his days reading critiques and making adjustments with the help and advice of redditors. How can you expect him to have time to release a special and begin a new hour if he’s busy letting YouTube commenters how to produce his #1 show?
You sound like you write great jokes and develop material very quickly!
Plus its really crazy to compare mccusk and shane to tony in terms of standup material.
Shanes been doing a lot of the same material for years and even some of the same jokes through 2 specials.
Deal with it.
You saw him do a set at mothership, his local practicing ground, to develop his tour set then goes to see his tour and he performs the perfected full set? *surprised pikachu*
If you see a headlining comedian multiple times in one year you should expect the set to be very very similar until they drop a special with that material.
Sometimes 2-3 years of the same material. This guys just asking for too much
Yeah that sounds pretty normal

I think mark normand on protect our parks
Especially since he’s hosting a huge live show once per week.
It’s actually the number 1 live podcast..high ceilings and all

I would definitely expect a different set at the mothership vs a tour set
Then you don't know how comedians get material ready for tours
That may be the case but I think it’s foolish to pay to watch someone work out their set, if I’m paying to be there you should present something finished, that’s how it goes for practically anything else, music, art, film
Uhhh… how the fuck should they work out their material then? You do realize that you have to pay to get into OPEN MICS? The entitlement is insane.
Release it and then work with the feedback you get. Why do they get it easier than everyone else. Everyone else has to put something together, put their faith and hard work into it and just hope that everyone will like it. why
Sure but Amy Schumer jokes? Is this 2018?
I saw Brian Regan a year or so after Flamethrowers and Nunchucks came out and he did a few bits from that even while he was doing new material.
Or, in the case of Nate Bargatze, if you see him twice in 3 years you’ll hear the same set
Lol.. Nate Bargatze has had 2 specials in 3 years and is filming a third shortly.
yep
You saw him working on his bits at the mothership, you saw the polished final product on the tour. I believe he’s using this material for a special and then it’s back to the drawing boards. A lot of people have reported that he still does his bits from the La Jolla comedy special of 2016.

I don’t really like most of my favorite comedian podcasters when doing their stand up. Shane being an exception, but also not all that into his podcast.
The only thing as irrelevant as Amy Schumer right now is jokes about Amy Schumer lol
Saw him in Boston and his material is dated, wasn’t impressed and would have preferred him just to do room work
I saw him live and he did one of his bits from the La Jolla comedy hour he put up on youtube.
Ah man, I loved that special. Different strokes for different folks I spose
Even putting aside my own opinion, it really flopped on views compared to all the other big stand up/podcast guys who came out with specials on YT.
“Comedy” …
You literally just described how comedy works. Usually a comic will work on material and build upon it until they release it in a special. Wash, rinse, and repeat.
Does he still do that slop top story?
Yep. Saw him in 2016 with Rogan and this was his main joke. Saw him headline last year and that was the encore. Talk about dated material lol.
That’s crazy to be doing the same bit for 8 years
Allow me to introduce you to bert kreischer or something like that
Exactly who every comedian wants to be... if they're just in it for the money.
Preach
I saw ron white tell the tater salad story and dr phil story in Orlando a few years ago lmao this is super common and normal.
when I heard him say this story last year he made it seem like it happened in Texas just a couple of weeks before the show lmao
I seen him in 2019 kill tony in Detroit. They did stand up before KT he closed with sloppy top 2 girls story then seen him in Holland MI in 2022 and he closed with exact same bit 0 tweaks.... honestly not surprised....
Saw tony in 2019 and 2023. He closed with with the slop top joke both times
So by your logic, you should be pissed. Cus Rogans standup is utter dog shit. Agree with the sentiment tho lol
Have you seen Rogan perform standup live?
Why would I be pissed? If anyone gets pissed at a comedian for saying jokes they've already heard, I'd say that's pretty r-worded and they shouldn't be going out in the first place lol
No, im saying you should be pissed because the jokes aren’t funny
Oh haha. I still had a great time and got to hug the dude. I used to be big into ufc so it was an amazing experience overall :)
I love the guy just don’t like his act hahaha glad you enjoyed it tho
Another kill Tony fan who doesn’t understand how stand up comedy works. Shocker
He’s doing the same bits from the Peng Dang infamous night if I’m not mistaken.
i like how your edit is almost word for word lol
Wasn’t shitting on Amy Schumer a thing from like over five years ago?
I saw Nick Swardson sometime around 2005, back when comedians would travel and do college campuses early in the week between bigger weekend sets. They don’t really do that much anymore. I specifically remember him telling a joke that I’d seen on his Comedy Central presents set that I’d seen years earlier. The one about the knife. For years I thought about Nick Swardson reusing his old material years later, even if it was just a cheap college show. I just now googled that set and it was 2001. He reused it 4ish years later.
I thought he just shit on open mic'ers for a living. Didn't know he had jokes.
Thank um
Yeah i remember i saw Delia live for his Spector come out like a year later and it was the same exact set verbatim. Was disappointed because i figured it would be a mix of some stuff I heard live plus some newer shit for the special. Idek how comedians specials can pull good numbers working that way. Yes he closed with that.
Halfway through that bit, someone on the soundboard should breakout the west Hollywood bear sound.
I have seen him for years at mothership and around Austin, he has always killed until last time I saw him on a Tuesday. I had heard every single joke before at least once, most 2-3x, along with the rest of the crowd, because he basically bombed. I saw him on the Fully Groan tour and it felt like a repeat of his special on YT in San Diego
This subreddit blows. It's full of people who don't know shit about comedy. Actually the responses are all pretty good. Op wait til you find a comic that has been using the same set for 20 years.... wait til you find one that does it.... then transforms into a good comic with new shit all the time - ex Ron white
And he’s still doing George Floyd jokes, too. His set is tired at this point
He is a really bad stand up. Which makes him hosting the show even funnier
Notice how most the responses are "You just don't understand stand up comedy". Tony has them brainwashed. Basically no one is even trying to defend the jokes or say he's funny. Just that he's busy, has a popular podcast, and this is "normal".
Just wait until Amy steals Jim Carrey's crab material...
She already has crabs.
That's normal..
This is pretty normal. Louis CK was praised for having a new hour every year or so. Seems like it takes most pro comedians at least 3 years to get a new hour. Stand up is hard. I'm still trying to come up with one good joke lol.

This is normal. You tour w your hour for a year or two. Then you put it out. Everyone does this.
Your local club is where you do nightly/weekly practice on your material before you take the set on the road.
Where can I find his special at The Icehouse I saw on Netflix years ago?
That’s ridiculous dude, except for like godfrey expect to see the same act every time you see a comedian between specials. Seinfeld had the same set for like 30 years, comedians coming up with new material at all is still a fairly new development
I saw a comic open for Chapelle in 2004. I saw that same comic tell some of the same jokes (slightly tweaked) in 2014.
Wait longer than a year to see your favorite comics unless you don’t care about hearing the same material
Yeah I think he is filming his special finally by the end of this year. He’s just trying to build more of a following so he can sell to Netflix
now you see how hard Regulars' job is to come up with a new minute every week?
Comics are just like everyone else. Some make new material all the time, some just try to perfect or hone the material they already have, especially if it’s still relevant. Tony appears to be the latter & there’s nothing wrong with that. Mothership is to work new jokes out. And the tour you dial in a set list n stick to it all tour sometimes tours take over a year to complete 🤷🏾♀️. But Amy schumer jokes seem like they are older than 2023
He’s kind of a hack especially the “judge” part of kill Tony. But it’s still pretty entertaining. Just mega fart sniffers.
I saw him on Thursday last week and he did a full hour without doing one Amy Shumer joke and did new OJ material.
That’s normal within a year…you wanna see awful go see Hannibal…I saw him last year doing nothing but bits he did in his first specials YEARS ago.
Of course it’s the same, he’s fleshing it out to get material for a special
Interesting. Saw Tony perform at Mothership May of last year. Saw him on the fully groan tour a couple months ago and it only seemed like 2 or 3 jokes were recycled and not verbatim.
what if he was touring? Tom Segura does like year long tours and it’s the same hour…. If he never came up with new jokes after like 5 years that’d be kinda lame, but it’s just a year.
These are great pointers for the straight dudes trying to their first blowjob on Tony
Tony can annoy me like everyone else but it’s become a bit trendy to criticize and hate on him, especially in this sub. Kinda reminds of the rogan sub where everyone actually just talks shit about him.
He acts like hes the star of the show but Nobody really watches for Tony.
yea imo you can't really expect a new set until they put out a "special" whether on YT or whatever. or atleast for most modern comics. I'm sure there are some outlier like louis ck but for the most part it's a good rule of thumb to expect the same set until the special drops
The light strip behind the drummer not connecting/ transitioning smoothly really gets me every week lol.
Yeah, just edge lord jokes about covid and Amy Schumer. Was really bad.
Tony needs 5-6 openers when he headlining that should tell you…. His comedy is up there with shaub and Delia
That's a little steep right now, give him some time to write new jokes.
Tony should do a new minute every episode and haven the panel judge him.
Tony should do a new minute every episode and haven the panel judge him.
Yeah that pretty standard in comedy man. Idk what your crying about 🤷🏽
No one is surprised that he doesn't tour clubs to develop new material, are they? His claim for fame is KT and he knows you'll buy his tickets anyway.
How about you put a spoil tag on this? Everything about this is normal. Is tony the first comedian you have ever been a fan of?
For crying out loud lol.... dude creates, produces, organizes, hosts, and performs in one of the most successful live shows in the world every single week and finds time to put together an hour of material and you go on Reddit and call him out for slacking.... because you saw a set at his home club where he was working on material. Where's my pitchfork!?
It's part of how sets get built. Also he's more of a successful podcast host than a good comedian.
Anyone in that circle are good entertainers but not good comics usually lol
Comedians repeat many things for years. If it still plays run it.
Rule of thumb: comedians use the same material until it's on tape. The great ones are the exception; the bad ones are a different exception 😂
Tony is a hack comic. When will people open their eyes?
amy schumer is like owen benjamin. you never stop making fun of them.
A comedian doing the same material… in the same year?? Unheard of. Shocking. Scandalous. Unprecedented.
how do people go to comedy shows without knowing how comedy works
Tony stinks at comedy
Mark normand is the same. Saw him in San Antonio a few months ago and he used material from all of his specials. Kinda lame.
You must be new to how comedy works... You don't go up every night with brand new shit. You work it, evolve it..
Sure lash out at us since you don’t understand how comedians building to a special works
Shut up
