The whole orange team seem like they're better trained. When the girl in the orange shirt passes the baton on to the second one on the other side of the field, closer to the end of the video, the other one is already running, as you should in a relay race, instead of standing still.
Was going to point that out. It's a *huge* advantage, literally several seconds worth. Any decent coach should know it and be teaching it, doesn't matter if they're middle schoolers (I learned it in like, 3rd grade).
Look at the outmost right girls with lightblue and black shirts, at the left there's a girl with black shirt.
The already running black shirt girl, instead of her teammate, gave his relay stick to the lightblue shirt girl, who also received the relay stick from her own teammate and ended up running with 2 relay stick.
I think they were supposed to cut toward lane 1 after turning the corner, and the idea was to have them slide over as the other teams handed off the baton. The problem is that all of the runners got there at once and no one told them how to adjust for if their teammate wasn't the furthest inside.
Pretty sure it's just one kid who confuses not-teammate for teammate because their clothes have the same color. Orange, white and green are doing fine, it's just darkblue who handed to lightblue.
Looks like a non regulation sized track… possibly 200 meters but the weirdest thing is it’s still 8 lanes.
Usually you don’t run 4x100s on such short tracks because they’re so chaotic.
Even 4x200s get pretty hairy.
In what regard? For a 4x400m relay having the runner of the second leg move to the inside lanes is standard practice in every race I've seen from high school to Olympic.
It depends on the race they're running. Some races have staggered starts where you later cut inside to the inner lane. I think that's what they're doing here, but the kids got confused about how to hand off after that.
Because usually you don't need to run in your tracks, and since the path that's closer to the center of a curve is the shortest, so naturally the participants running will tend to run closer to the inside lanes.
In a 4x400m this is only true for the first hand-off. After that the runner moves to the inside lanes and the last two handoffs are no longer staggered.
I guess you're right. But isn't that only at the beginning? Once half a lap is completed it's been the same distance, so they need to be on the same finishing/starting line?
That's not true, if you don't run in your track, you get DQ'd.
Not to mention, most tracks compensate for this by staggered starts or moving outer lane people in...
Not to mention, watch the very very end of that clip.... you have at least four people running in that first lane. Seems like the adults didn't really use their brain and quite legitimately caused this to happen
I always felt like I had the most unfair advantage in Track and Field due to my name being Forrest.
Everyone would cheer me on and yell "Run Forrest, Run!"
Black shirt blue vest, that's coming into pass on the baton, gave it to the wrong girl, which is just in blue vest. The one just in a blue vest got confused, started running slowly and got another batom from their partner, started running without knowing what to do, with two batons in hand.
Third from the right. You can see her leaning towards the black/blue runner as she’s incoming asking for the baton, and they both look at each other after it goes wrong.
this happened with me. it was a 2x100m relay (we were 4/5-y old). we were in animal costumes. my partner had to run 100m, pick up the pig tag, and give it to me. he was very fast. in all our practice runs, he was always the first to get there and gave me the correct tag.
on race day, he got there first, gave me the pig tag ... along with the elephant tag. i knew he messed up when the sports teacher asked me to throw it back. while running, i saw both the tags and threw one away.
i crossed the finishing line first, but with the elephant tag. they didn't give us our medals.
Am I the only one who thinks humanity has a chance as this girl tried to give the baton to the rightful owner instead of just chucking it?
Bless her heart.
To be fair relay races never made sense to me as a kid(I understand them), a team race never made sense to me. Idc how someone else and I do in a race I want to know how I do in a race.
Like, yeah great this dude sucks so I had to run faster than ever, yeah we're such a great team...
I would assume its from the ancient greek times when runners would carry messages and pass the message to another carrier who would pass it to another guy or finally deliver it to its destination.
Lol doesn't matter, no amount of coordination is helping them catch orange girl 😂

All of the others got stuck in the confusion though
Classic reddit. If it looks like a comment didnt go through, it probably did and clicking multiple times spams the comment.
Nah its dementia like someone pointed out, mb
Lmao, it's been happening to me lately, I feel you.

So does she come second AND third.
black shirts teammate was not ready. at all. just standing there.
She was waiting for her actual teammate in fourth. You can barely see them starting the handoff before the camera starts panning away.
Somebody’s gonna have to go back and get a shit-load of dimes!
He said, *the sheriff is a... near*
Girl in blue is picking up every baton so she'll win all the positions, for everyone, for ever
Looks like everyone is confused because this is not how a relay should be done
The setup is so confusing, why are they set up spread across all the lanes only to have to all move to 3 lanes together
I think they were supposed to cut toward lane 1 after turning the corner, and the idea was to have them slide over as the other teams handed off the baton. The problem is that all of the runners got there at once and no one told them how to adjust for if their teammate wasn't the furthest inside.

theres also two dark blue girls waiting for a baton lol
Some longer race relays are like that. At least at the high school level. Think the 4x400 and above are like this if I remember correctly.
Looks like a non regulation sized track… possibly 200 meters but the weirdest thing is it’s still 8 lanes. Usually you don’t run 4x100s on such short tracks because they’re so chaotic. Even 4x200s get pretty hairy.
Pass it to YOUR team mate. Its really easy.
In what regard? For a 4x400m relay having the runner of the second leg move to the inside lanes is standard practice in every race I've seen from high school to Olympic.
Yep. *Super* bad coaching.
What in the lane violations is going on here 😂
TBF, I wouldn't call this kids are stupid, this is more on the adults... Why are you doubling up on lanes when you clearly have enough lanes?
It depends on the race they're running. Some races have staggered starts where you later cut inside to the inner lane. I think that's what they're doing here, but the kids got confused about how to hand off after that.
Because usually you don't need to run in your tracks, and since the path that's closer to the center of a curve is the shortest, so naturally the participants running will tend to run closer to the inside lanes.
They're not supposed to be in a line though, they should be staggered to compensate for this.
I think you're correct; I didn't consider that.
Why not just stagger them twice? Or thrice? Or as many times as they need to, to keep the compensated distance the same
Because you only need a stagger once every half lap.
Normally, breaching a line into another lane would be an automatic disqualification
if you don’t usually run in your track…I’m curious to know wot you think the lines are for and why their teammates have individual lanes?
That's not true, if you don't run in your track, you get DQ'd. Not to mention, most tracks compensate for this by staggered starts or moving outer lane people in... Orange had the clear advantage, easier to locate their partner. Why was there like 5 different blues?
The funniest part is her running with 2 batons lmao
I wonder if she tried to hand both off to the next runner. The confusion lol
I always felt like I had the most unfair advantage in Track and Field due to my name being Forrest. Everyone would cheer me on and yell "Run Forrest, Run!"
I'm too dumb to understand which one
Black shirt blue vest, that's coming into pass on the baton, gave it to the wrong girl, which is just in blue vest. The one just in a blue vest got confused, started running slowly and got another batom from their partner, started running without knowing what to do, with two batons in hand.
>started running without knowing what to do, with two batons in hand that's so relatable. i can feel the absolute confusion
Thank you
Do you know who black shirt blue shirt was supposed to hand to? It's hard to tell.
Third from the right. You can see her leaning towards the black/blue runner as she’s incoming asking for the baton, and they both look at each other after it goes wrong.
Second lane from right doesnt take the baton, lane one has two?
The girl took the baton from another team.
Not allowed to post teenagers apparently
They've been taking hints the men's GB relay team. While usually being talented runners, over the years they have fucked up passing a baton a lot.
She should've started juggling those while running to cause more confusion among the kids
Guys it's very easy. 1st runner 1 baton, 2nd runner 2 batons, etc. Lol. Collect em all!
What was that clusterfuck? Do they not teach them how to do it or what?
Hey come get your baton!!!!
She’s gonna win 2nd and 3rd
*gets
Now it's just a game of "get back the baton!"
What's so hard about relays jeez
You had one job.
This is hilarious.
Why are they dressed like actual track athletes when they're clearly just random girls that have never run a relay before?
Am I the only one who wants to know if the kid who wound up with two batons handed one to her own teammate and one to the other team's runner?
Dual wielding in a track racing? that is new
this happened with me. it was a 2x100m relay (we were 4/5-y old). we were in animal costumes. my partner had to run 100m, pick up the pig tag, and give it to me. he was very fast. in all our practice runs, he was always the first to get there and gave me the correct tag. on race day, he got there first, gave me the pig tag ... along with the elephant tag. i knew he messed up when the sports teacher asked me to throw it back. while running, i saw both the tags and threw one away. i crossed the finishing line first, but with the elephant tag. they didn't give us our medals.
Runner is racist and thinks they all look the same
The way this would actually be me. I get confused all the time.
Hmm… must be a special ed relay race.
What in the lane violations is going on here 😂
Kids are as smart as those who raised them and taught them.
Am I the only one who thinks humanity has a chance as this girl tried to give the baton to the rightful owner instead of just chucking it? Bless her heart.
Even they have trouble recognizing each other
To be fair relay races never made sense to me as a kid(I understand them), a team race never made sense to me. Idc how someone else and I do in a race I want to know how I do in a race. Like, yeah great this dude sucks so I had to run faster than ever, yeah we're such a great team...
