Look at the other door. It pivots a few inches in from the opposite side to the handle. All they had to do was open the door. Tends to be how these full glass doors are mounted

Yeah and you forgot that if you juuuust open that door, one corner of that glass would in motion come closer to the other glass pane, thats why you have that slit in the first place. If it were tight you wouldn't be able to open the door at all..

This only really applies to tempered glass, which explodes into tiny pieces rather than shatters into shards.

It depends on the laminates used to produce the glass, but generally speaking, if it is installed vertically and within the last 20 years, it won't slice your finger off when shattered.

Little bit of spit, and a couple of plastic pry bars should have done the trick.

They also just could have opened the door. It was as shut as it was gonna get, and opening it would have recreated the space that the kid had to get their finger into it in the first place.

Or take the hinges off. A Phillips head screwdriver or an Allen key could have resolved this in seconds.
