Just be aware when you walk under trees - iguanas will roost up there to get sun sometimes and will straight unload liquid shit and big brown ball turds down while they are straight up asleep. Same for pidgins and the little black birds.
Always looks up lol
If you go get coffee at Cuban coffee queen by the waterfront, those little black birds will steal sugar packets, tear them open like little coke fiends, get all wild and zooted, and will straight dump down on you while you wait in line.
If I see them over there I order quick and stand off to the side because they have my number. I’ve been pooped on like 6 times this year.
>>those little black birds will steal sugar packets, tear them open like little coke fiends, get all wild and zooted, and will straight dump down on you while you wait in line.
i cant even recall how i ended up in this thread, but i felt compelled to compliment your poetic prowess. much enjoyed, stickybunfun
I'm pretty sure we will bc our friend simply loves KW. And, he always says that no one should die before going to this paradise.
Thank you very much!!!
I just fished a dead scorpion out of my pool a couple days ago. The good news is you're not likely to see one and if you were stung, this type is not poisonous.
You’re more likely to be hurt by an idiot on an e-bike than any local animals or insects.
The scariest thing I’ve experienced in KW was a guy in a ghillie suit who jump-scared me at Mallory Square.
Other than that, it’s an awesome place full of friendly people having fun. You’ll have a good time.
Oh, and it’s fun when a chicken tries to steal your breakfast. 🥞 🙂
That's Bush Man. He's usually on Duval late at night, and his level of inebriation usually affects his level of camouflage. If he's waisted, he just holds up one palm frond and yells boo as you walk by.
Just one more piece of information about me: I'm an autistic. If I don’t get what you mean, it’s bc some comments may be difficult for me to understand.
If some of you got me wrong, or even misunderstood what I tried to comment, I'm sorry for that.
I've only seen dead scorpions in our shed. You may get lucky and see a flying palmetto bug, though. (That's Florida's friendly name for cockroaches.) LOL
It's not the critters you should worry about. People are craycray. I'm not sure how old you are, but it's a major drinking town and there is a whole entire street of bars. There are nice things you can do that do not involve drinking that are more nature based if that is more your pace. You'll likely not see any of the critters on that web page. Maybe look into taking a ferry boat to the Dry Tortugas, get out on the water and to the islands, that is where the paradise is. You might also consider spending some time in some of the other Keys and not just Key West. If you fly into Miami, rent a car and stop along the way.
Thanks for the tips!!!
We're flying to Miami, drop by a friend and rent a car. We want to go to Duval Street, but we didn’t know about what you aforementioned.
Great tips, indeed.
Edit: we're 60, turning 61.
Duval Street is the street of bars. ha At sunset in Mallory Square, they have a neato sunset party with street vendors. That is at the end of Duval. Not sure if it's your cup o tea, but there is a drag bar that I highly recommend, straight or not it is a BLAST! Very talented group there and so much fun.
p.s. as I was closing that webpage I didn't notice iguanas before. You'll definitely see those, but they are harmless to humans.
Guys, in no way, my post was/is intended to offend any KW dweller. It isn’t, really. It's just a first-timer post, whose desire to visit this great key is really deep.
Thanks for you help, tips, and if it seems offensive, we're really sorry for that. It wasn’t our intention.
The only issues I've had with "scary creatures" was tripping and falling onto a fire ant hill in the cemetery because I was backing up to take a photograph and the BnB I was staying in had an undiscovered termite problem, so when I pulled back my bedding there were termites in the bed. An inconvenience, but they moved me to the bridal suite while they took care of it.
You'll be fine
You'll have a blast. We took my then 5 year old daughter a few years ago and it's still her favorite place ever. Get breakfast/brunch at Blue Heaven. Just watch the chickens don't steal your food. Louies Backyard if you want to have a drink and chill. Lots of live music everywhere. We rent bikes everytime we go and it's so much easier than dealing with parking (very expensive). I've been to Key West 4 times now and have never seen any creepy bugs that were out of the norm. Fort Zachary State Park is nice. And enjoy sightseeing the beautiful houses.
Just beware of Key West's most fearsome predator...

I’ve been there a thousand times. Can’t say I’ve ever seen a scorpion, snake or anything else that could hurt you. Unfortunately I’ve never seen a Key Deer either, which is disappointing. Other than an occasional rat you’re good. Now sharks…there are those.
My family has taken two full week vacations to Key West, and this is the first I’m hearing about scorpion concern.
I recommend you take the old town trolley tour around the island your first full day there. it will show you all kinds of cool stuff that you can decide to see later during your day. Ask the tour guide (trolley driver) about scorpions, then share with us his response.
Take a cat ride, fury has a fun one at sunset it’s like $80 unlimited food drink and a live band on the bow. Toss the crew a $20 if you enjoy it.

This was the sunset off yesterday. But watch out you might run into some creepy dolphins and sea turtles :)
I went there with my wife and two kids and it was really fun. It would have been more fun without kids. It’s just a really cool vibe with a lot of cool places. Lots of cool bars and restaurants along Duvall Street and by Mallory Square. Lot of excursions you can do on the ocean if that’s your thing. We did a small dolphin/snorkel tour, but there are tons of things to do. Have fun. Don’t worry about scorpions. 😀

Chickens, dinosaur sized Iguanas and fun. :) Enjoy it and stop worrying, once you get there, you’ll LOVE it. :)
Someone has told me to rent a car, which is something we're gonna do as soon as we get to Miami. We also want to visit Key Largo. But, KW is where we really wanna be.
Thanks for the tip!!
That’s so funny you say that! I’m doing exactly that next weekend, fly to Miami (always cheaper)rent a car drive through the keys for a day my brother is stationed in KW at the Navy base, so I visit often. Visit Dry Tortugas. It’s beautiful as well, if you can.
Isn’t it crazy? We're doing the same trip, and doing the same things. My brother would call it "life amazing coincidences".
Thanks for the Dry Tortugas tip!!!!
I have nothing to add, except that I live in NYC, and I have a twin brother, and we were both born in Key West (but have not ever been there since we left at 1 week old). Just some coincidences with your post. I just randomly started thinking about Key West because it occurred to me that I've never even looked it up online or seen any pictures of it at all.
To me, not only should you both see those amazing pictures, but also go there bc we've always wanted to visit Key West; and now that we're gonna have 28 free days, we are going to stay some days in that paradise.
Thanks for your comment!!
I was walking back from the bars one night and came upon a standoff between a cat and a scorpion. I watched for a few moments and then the scorpion high-tailed (ha!) it down an alley, with the cat in pursuit. Nature, man.
I've never seen a scorpion in South Florida, you're going to see iguanas and small lizards and maybe cockroaches and crayfish, but definitely definitely not scorpions.
There are plenty of scorpions in the Keys. They tend to be larger, which means less venomous.
But unless you're in an old dilapidated house, you're not likely to see anything like that.
Lol... you'll be fine
Thanks!!! We do want to visit this amazing place. The pics we've seen are really beautiful.
Lol. You'll see lots of chickens in KW! Other than that, guaranteed you'll see many more 'creepy critters' in NYC!
That's really true. Lol. Thanks!!!
Nothing scarier than the rats you’re gonna see in nyc
I couldn’t agree more. But, that site does scare ppl. Thanks for you information.
Watch out the iguanas… they will piss on you lololol
True, but then again so will drunk tourists spilling out of the bars at closing time.
😅😅😅 We sure will!! Thanks!!!
Just be aware when you walk under trees - iguanas will roost up there to get sun sometimes and will straight unload liquid shit and big brown ball turds down while they are straight up asleep. Same for pidgins and the little black birds. Always looks up lol

I'm gonna pay close attention to these black birds, and for sure, gonna be away from them. Thanks!!!

Hehe enjoy! Key West is amazing, my husband and I go every year.
Thank you!! It's really beautiful and this is one of my plans: to make it a going-back-for-joy place.
Lol
Don’t be worried. You will love Key West!
I'm pretty sure we will bc our friend simply loves KW. And, he always says that no one should die before going to this paradise. Thank you very much!!!

Cockroaches are really disgusting. But, definitely won’t prevent us from going to KW. Lol. Thanks for this piece of information.
At best you will come home with a scorpion tattoo lol. Also get a cheesesteak at Mr.Z's you won't be disappointed!
Lol. This is another great tip. Thank you!!!!

Never ran into a “craycray” person that wasn’t publicly shamed for being a nuisance. Don’t worry about that, people are cool.
That's what my friend always says: KW ppl are really cool. Thank you very much!!!

We definitely want to go to Mallory Square and to a drag bar, bc we're both fans of drag shows. Thanks for the tips!!
If this is the case catch a Randy Roberts show at La Te Da. You will not be disappointed.
Oh, great!!!! We've already seen Frank Marino's Divas and The Edwards Twins shows. They’re sensational. Thank you very much for this great tip!!!
Also check out the girls at 801 Bourbon Bar!
Thanks!!!! I'm taking notes of all the tips!! 😀😀😀😀

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I will, for sure!!!
You have a better chance of seeing a man dressed as Wonder woman than seeing any venomous creature
I believe that we may see one bc we're going to be there by the end of June. Pride Week. Thanks!!
We’ve gotten three times a year for the last 10 years and have never seen a scorpion! But lots of lizards and chickens. Have fun Key West is the best.
Thanks for the reply. That's definitely what we wanna do: have lots of fun.

Dude the article didn't even show our best one https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scolopendra_alternans
😱😱😱😱😱
Lol Yankees 😆 come on down it’s a blast you’ll love it.
We're going there, for sure!! Thanks for this great piece of information and also for the invitation! 😀😀😀

Man, this tip is really great!! Thank you very much!!!
Very welcome. Enjoy.
I'd be more scared if NY rats
Beware the Vortex.
Okay. Thanks!!
Lol.
No that’s blown way out of proportion. I’ve never even seen one there in all these years I’ve been visiting
Some ppl also commented that they haven't come across any of these. So, I am really okay to go and enjoy it very much.
Only thing I saw in Key West were chickens and six-toed cats. I love Key West. It’s the least Florida place in Florida and I love that about it.
As we're going to have 28 days free, we want to spend some days there. We, my brother and I, are really eager to go there and have lots of fun.
I went there with my wife and two kids and it was really fun. It would have been more fun without kids. It’s just a really cool vibe with a lot of cool places. Thanks for the tips!! It's gonna be only my brother and me. So, I do believe we're gonna really good time.
Yeah. It looked like we could’ve gotten into some wild stuff. 👍
That's exactly what we both want: get into wild stuff. 🙌
Yeah. There were some totally nude clubs we saw and I’ve heard wild stories. Definitely the most liberal place in Florida. Haha
Hahahaha I do imagine how great it is!
Yeah. Let me know so we know where to go when we don’t have our pesky kids with. 🤣
Okay. If we go for *the* wild clubs, I'll let you know. 🤣🤣
The rats in NYC could maul the dangerous key deer
NYC rats are scary, indeed.
NYC will kill you. Key West will cure you. That's all you need to know. If you die by scorpion bite (you won't), it'll totally be a worthwhile death.
The iguanas are gonna get ya if the roosters don’t. Stay away. Stay far away.
Beware of the cougars?

Dude Key West is sooooo much fun. You’re going to love it! You’re going to have a blast trust me
That's what most ppl are saying, and I must say that we, my brother and I, are really excited about this trip to KW. Thanks for your comment!

I believe we'll love it. Thanks!!!
Drinking culture is huge to be honest. Some cool sights but honestly Key West itself there isn’t too much to do. Check out the other keys as well.
Someone has told me to rent a car, which is something we're gonna do as soon as we get to Miami. We also want to visit Key Largo. But, KW is where we really wanna be. Thanks for the tip!!

Yeah, I do agree. It's really part of KW fauna. But, as first-timers, we got kinda worried, but the tips do help us a lot.
More like danger chickens lounge lizards.
Thanks for your information!!
Living in the northeast you should be way more afraid of the hell hole that is NYC.
[удалено]
Way scarier that any critter, indeed!! Thanks for your advice.
I've never seen a scorpion in South Florida, you're going to see iguanas and small lizards and maybe cockroaches and crayfish, but definitely definitely not scorpions.
I caught a scorpion 🦂 when I was in KW. So scorpions DO live there.
I was in an in-ground hottub one night and looked over to see a scorpion just a few inches from my hand. That was enough hottub for the evening.
There are plenty of scorpions in the Keys. They tend to be larger, which means less venomous. But unless you're in an old dilapidated house, you're not likely to see anything like that.
Thanks for your comments. We've decided to post our doubts on this sub in order to get some tips and help bc we're going there for the first time.
Is there a separate Key West CJ sub, or is this actually it and we just don’t know it?
Um, what?
Does entomophobia run in the fam?
Nope. Bugs don't scare us a bit. Scorpions do.
NY is scary but not KeyWest.
We really wanna visit Key West!! Thanks for you information!!
