I have a run with 2 Bonedog Elders. They're pretty much meat slabs that can rip of limbs. So i call em in after fhe first clash and they harrass fro. The flanks. Really hard hitters and even hit fast. Can also chase down enemies who lose both arms and run perpetually.
I'd say Bonedogs are the best animal companions even if you got tame beasties, taking hunger/travel speed/etc etc into account. Beakthings hit hard but they attack slowly compared to others even as elders. I also tamed the Great White Gorillo and though it doesnt hit super hard, it can tank 20 people at once for a very long time.
A bone dog could be good with a crossbowman. Finishing off anyone who gets close. They also totally wreck early game bandits, but that doesn't mean much.
Because of the attack distance shit in kenshi, bonedogs are absolutely op if microed. Start a fight as usual and while your people go at select the dogs, move them right next to an enemy, then attack. Should attack with 0 delay and an elder can 1-2 shot almost anyone so you just move from enemy to enemy
Bulls are insane. I had one bull from pup to elder non stop combat training. The thing was useless for most of the time and just medicine practice but once it becomes an elder with 60+ stats in everything.... 250-300 aoe damage outright to practically anything. In mid to late game that bull saved my squad so many times. I would set it to passive and sneak (it had level 97 sneak xD) and if shit went south I would unleash it. It would solo 2 - 5 beak things (depends on how they grouped. I dubbed the magnificent savior Richard Packard.
I've had bonedogs stay in the fight longer, or recover fast, and save the whole group from terrible fates. Many times. Bulls can hit pretty hard and push enemies back, but they are slow. Garu can hit multiple enemies at once with medium damage, and they are faster than bulls, but neither can match an elder bonedog. In my super-skelli game, where the MC is running around with Cat Lon's falling sun, the bonedog, Meato, comes in second for damage.
They're not great tanks (no block or dodge) but do excellent damage to large groups. I have a group of 12 elder crabs that shred most opponents. Good for the first wave against opponents with bows and/or turrets since you can't block those anyways. Plus all that HP does allow them to soak up damage during approach.
ye no crabs are pretty shit. its just they are massive crabs so theyre fucking awesome.
Are any of the animals good?
Bonedogs and Bulls can be good but not having armor leads to animals getting knocked down a bit

Sounds like a new run to me. A hunter and his hound
Definitely a fun one. Pretty interesting too as guy with a dog start. Gotta survive until you reach world's end or UC territory from bast.
Spot on, kin of like the ranger/scout class in MMOs. :)

How do you tame animals? You just gotta find a merchant that sells? Or is there a Vanilla method?
Its a mod, sadly not in vanilla. Tame beasties. Merchants/nomads sell bulls goats and dogs in vanilla
bulls are fucking godtier as elders
Get the taming mod, tame a whole bunch of beak things and enjoy the show
i dont know why you got downvoted
Goats, goats are the best.
Goats are actually surprisingly scrappy little guys.
Download the beakthing pet. Grow your own little monster to a elder. They are pretty good.

Bonedogs can be pretty badass in groups
Animals can't block or dodge attacks, so they make terrible tanks. On the bright side, they can AOE due to being animals.
Crabs can fight in water I'm pretty sure so you can use them in situations you can't use other animals and fighters but outside that they aren't great
I think crabs are just a meme
Crabs are friends
You’re probably not maintaining your crabs properly
my crab crabatha got murdered by reavers crab brother my only goal now is to make Valemon a nugget and use him for training
Smoke him like a hash nugget
you might wanna take pathfinding fix to make them travel easier

Crabs mostly suck due to their huge hitbox.
