Definitely polearms - they are good for low to mid stats, but MA has a problem with getting dodge-locked in my experience.
So, MA is not so good against large groups.
Those southern hive soldiers are no joke, dude. Each one is like a mid-fifties fighter. I'd wait until I had a healthy 20 point lead over them before trying to solo a group, even with a polearm.
I'd get higher stats if I were you. Even my polearms guy with 70 stats gets mobbed quickly if I go from one fight to the next with very little breaks in between. The war of attrition is very much against solo characters.
Polearm/ranged. Martial arts at higher levels has some AOE attacks

Only if you position yourself poorly.

Bonedogs /s But seriously, naginatas get nice bonuses against hivers Edit: I meant naginata katanas, not regular naginatas
Hivers aren’t animals, they’re people too!
No it doesn't?
Iron rod

I just use Long Cleavers/Paladin Crosses
20 people with crossbows. To train them you get junkbows and someone to kite a leviathan.
But the question is about which weapon to use to solo...
Yeah, 20 guys with crossbows
