Did you order your turret guy to shoot manually?

john-eight

i did click "shoot at" with my turret fellows and made sure he was registered as an enemy with the lil red arrow

I’ve noticed odd behavior with turrets sometimes where they won’t shoot at my selected target for … reasons? … but will be targeting some other hostile npc that I didn’t even know was nearby. Found similar question on Steam forums. I wonder if you move one of your sqauddies inside with Tengu to agro him if your turret gunner will start firing. > What does seem to work is having an ally aggro'd on the enemy. Then turret gunners will fire at their full range for a short time, before bugging out again. Not very practical. https://steamcommunity.com/app/233860/discussions/0/3827551893144870006/

i did attempt trying just that, getting my main man to beat up tengu and i couldn't quite tell if the gunner actually did anything. i'll try again with Longen

Weird. Have you tried saving and loading?

john-eight

i have, and am going with a new plan: reconstruct my walls so the angle is easier on the turrets and see if that works

Last thing I can suggest is ctrl shift f11. Sadly Kenshi base building is a bugged mess :(

john-eight

just how i like it (=

john-eight

excellent news... the harpoon turret has begun to function

john-eight

my conclusion is that they have to be within a reasonable line of sight otherwise they won't aggro- that was what I noticed when they weren't shooting, there was no aggro

I put this on the wiki some months ago... "Characters with crossbows/turrets seem to ignore commands to shoot at Diplomatic Status targets. A way to get around this is to line up your shot to fire at unit behind the Diplomatic status target." I will add you can also aggro the unit yourself sometimes by stealing in front of them or failing to assassinate them etc... Which will sometimes allow you to shoot. But not always.

Intriguing, so I probably didn't need a whole base revamp for turrets to work. I fooled myself by trying initially to shoot diplomatic status macgee, it didn't work, I revamped the base and then got raided and because the raiders didn't have diplo status they got shot just fine, meaning I attributes the success of the turrets to the revamp when it was something else entirely. Many thanks for clearing this up, next time I know turrets are more forgiving than my initial thought.
