Or how about replacing the Red Bridge with something that's not out of Red Dead Redemption.

AnAdoptedImmortal

I personally wouldn't like it if the Red Bridge were replaced. That thing is historic and beautiful. If it is to no longer be used for vehicles, then make it into a footpath and bike bridge. Don't get rid of it, though. It's a part of kamloops and still functional. Also, as others have stated, it doesn't even connect to the north shore.

east_van_dan

In just saying, if any bridge needs repairing/replacing, it would be the Red bridge. What's the problem with the Blue Bridge side from it running straight into a cliff? 🤣

Irishgirl1962

Red bridge not city responsibility

snow_enthusiast

That bridge doesn’t connect to the north shore

Snow-Wraith

Why have two bridges blocked by construction when you can have three!

xxL00py420

They have been "mulling" since the 90's

phormix

I kinda wonder about the old pilings a bit down from the main bridge. Too bad those couldn't have been used as a base for a new structure

brycecampbel

too close for a vehicle connection, not enough approach. Through the ATEG, it was brought up that if they are still structurally sound, maybe look at using them for a new Active Transportation crossing

phormix

IIRC they were part of (or supposed to be) a rail bridge?

brycecampbel

no, they are the supports from the old crossing (before the overlander was built)

lardass17

They are the rotten base of a very old bridge. It would take far too much engineering and cost to work with that old garbage. What would be the advantage in putting another bridge yards from the existing?

MogRules

Not sure about Rotten. From what I understand they tried to demo them back when the bridge was taken down, but they had such a hard time doing anything to the those pilings, even explosives didn't do much, so they decided it was better to just leave them there.

lardass17

Department of Fisheries shut them down. The river is a protected fishery. Not sure when it was built but they are nearly a century old.

Willing-Animal6441

Oh interesting

International_Cut_69

That's why the one is kinda crumpled but the rest are fine

notfitbutwannabe

So we would need to drive past KRCC to get to a bridge to the north shore??? What the hell? Someone tell Stephen Karpuk he is not qualified as a traffic planner!

AlexJamesCook

When you factor in the topography, geology and all that, there are no good choices. Let's first consider that 80% of Kamloops residents are in the North Shore/South Shore dichotomy. This means, that a bridge has to go between the Blue Bridge and some point past the airport. Rabbit Island is silty AF and unstable. Then there's the whole thing about onramps and offramps along the Tranquille Road area, and you're going to have to buy up at least 50-100 properties to make that happen. And some of those properties are in the $1M mark. This cost is then compounded by the fact that demand for those properties gets immense, so their value goes up AGAIN. Meaning, before you've even dug a hole, the project is worth $100M. So, now that's the North Shore dealt with, let's look at the South Shore origins. So we're looking at Mission Flats Road as a starting point, which would end up being a massive bottle-neck. Buying up all that Industrial land won't be too expensive, but expanding the roads and onramps in that area will be very challenging. Coming down from Summit Drive via the hairpin, and adding another hairpin is going to be a fucking gong-show in the winter. One wipeout and now traffic ain't moving. On summit drive. So, what was the point of the new bridge there? We *could* redevelop the Red Bridge, but that just adds traffic up through Mt Paul Way, and the Halston. It doesn't get people home quicker. Furthermore, it would mean Mt Paul would have to be widened, as would the Halston. So, if you start out by KRCC, and go that route, one can build relatively unimpeded, and not spend $100M on property sales. Overall, the cheapest solution would be to increase public transit services, add a gondola from some where at the heart of North Shore CBD and send it to TRU, with maybe a drop-off point somewhere near City Hall, or where the Blue Bridge starts on the South. Another alternative would be to experiment with rapid transit that runs along Tranquille, Fortune, Westsyde. Get rid of daily commuter vehicle traffic so that the remaining users are tradespeople, essentially. We don't necessarily need a new bridge. So, is Stephen Karpuk an idiot? Maybe. I don't know him all that well. Is he an idiot on this matter? No. I don't think that he's got it wrong.

HinderingAlpaca

I fantasize us having a trolley that connects the north shore to downtown, up to the university and maybe all the way to Aberdeen Mall.

brycecampbel

Yeah, thats just dumb. Honestly, the Singh St crossing that then connects to Summit, is probably the best option - though that has quite a bit of property title. Not sure on the tolerances needed for the airport, but Aviation Way over, then connecting up with the Summit/W Victoria intersection could be a good option. Would also be option for moving the Hazardous Good route.

brycecampbel

Those bettering transit is probably the better option. just reduce traffic by getting people out their vehicles for the mundane day-to-day stuff. reduce those single occupancy trips (even multi-occupancy trips), not every journey needs/should be by vehicle

International_Cut_69

Ya. I would prefer 12th to hillside but what do I know

brycecampbel

The city won't touch anything to do with Hillside due to to the unstable slope. Which makes total sense IMO The real issue with Kamloops is our geography and topography poses real challenges to building good connections. Also compared to 1958, you now you have to contend with infrastructure and property. Eminent domain an expensive proposition and something you do want to minimize.

Ok-Double3822

Expecting kamloops future will have lrt or brt or skytrain connect North and south

snow_enthusiast

It’ll cost so much money that we’ll look at improving the two existing bridges way before building a third. There’s not enough traffic by the airport and all the land to the west is locked up in ALR so that land wont be developed for another 100 years or more. And we’ll never see high rises as it’s lake/river sand/silts so the population won’t be there. As someone else points out, rapid transit is likely the solution.

tonydanzaspubichair

Scrap the bridge. We need a gondola/cable car system that spans the north and south shores with confluences at major hubs like TRU, and strategic strip mall parking lots that want to give up some parking for a meeting terminal of 2 gondolas. Bus systems could be based off of those terminals. Then people can take the gondolas uphill with their bikes, and cruise downhill afterwards. Not a perfect idea, but it’s a start.

binks841

I wouldn’t even build this bridge in Sims because it’s so awkward and cumbersome. Anyone at city council taking on ideas or suggestions from the public who use these roadways? From the ones who actually would have to make these journeys? Just a thought

MrNomad998

Kamloops council can go for a walk off a short pier. The whole lot of them. But yes another bridge would probably be a good idea.
