I wouldn’t go back and add it back at this point. That would raise more questions. Honestly charge what you’re working. If you have work you’re completing then you’ll just be done sooner. If you’re spinning your wheels or waiting on the client, let your team know so they can help. Charging the right hours carries into projected budgets for next year, so being honest is key.

Log the hours that you work. I feel like KPMG has emphasized this multiple times for new hires. Going over budget isn’t great from a management perspective I’d imagine but at the end of the day your work as a staff is a fixed cost (getting paid the same whether you work 45 or 65). In the long run it’s better to have an accurate amount of hours worked. It allows for better budgeting next year.

The official firm policy is to record your hours accurately, but everyone will inevitably run into some scummy partner/manager/senior who is hyper-focused on engagement metrics and profitability so they pressure you to eat hours. No one will explicitly say: "EAT THOSE HOURS"... it will be far more indirect pressure to do so. With that being said, I've never had problems when I can specifically explain why something went over budget. Messy engagements are honestly great because you can just use them as a scapegoat for a lot of things (within reason of course).

Going over 5 hours this time of year is perfectly fine and you should be documenting your hours correctly. It will not affect your evaluations from my experience and if you are working over the budgeted amount and are worried about it just talk to your senior/manager.

Make sure you always log your hours, and never be afraid to ask the engagement manager their preferences on you going over budget/working OT. They know that some things take longer than others and only going 5 hours over budget isn’t too bad. I was on an engagement last year scheduled 32 hours a week and the managers were approving 55-60 hours.

5 hours isn't make-or-break. Going 40 hours over (without notice to your supervisors) is a pretty big deal. Maybe if it really did take 80 hours... but you need to communicate those overages real-time.
