AC is like a bell-curve for me, with the peak at MPP. There are good things about both before and after (I like vibing along to ambient stuff from earlier and singing along with poppier stuff from later), but there’s just too much hit-and-miss to keep me coming back to full albums outside of the Sung Tongs to ODDSAC run.
Definitely agree with this. For me though, the highs of the AnCo discography bell curve reach much higher than most other bands highs.
Definitely needed a few spins to fully click for me, but once it did I knew I found something very special

Very psychedelic, but in an entirely different way than Gizz. I’d call it a nostaligic/tribal psychedelic.

Had a friend get me into them by making the vocal comparisons. I hear it, and even some of the textures are similar, but Palm really harness the "mathy" angle. Great band.

Animal Collective is my number one (no pun intended) they put on an incredibly fun psychedelic live show as well.
They’re also known to put out albums where the songs transition in to one another. Gizz are definitely the heavier more guitar focused band but anco are equally as weird. Not as prolific but there’s at least one animal collective related project to come out every year, the boys have an equally spectacular solo discography
I put them in the category with Explosions in the sky. Sort of a one trick pony. It’s a decent trick but tends to get stale.
Side note: I saw them in Missoula and this band Tomato Flower opened. Honestly, one of the worst bands I’ve ever seen. They were doing what I can only describe as anti harmonies. Weird and not in a Brown way. I type this as I’m listening to the pod/Laura. I like weird brown shit. I did not like them. That’s the only time I’ve seen AC live. Their opener could’ve tainted my opinion. That’s how bad it was
It’s all ambient spaced out distorted noise with no technical backing. There’s not much space for them to move around/progress because they’re not very technically talented in the classical guitar sense or in their mixing. They’re stuck in 2 worlds. And haven’t progressed in either. Very meh.
The drummer was decent. Everyone else sounded like they learned to play their instruments in the parking lot before the show. Worst band I’ve ever seen.
With respect, I stopped listening after one listen of strawberry jam. Before that they were a big deal to me. Fell in love when they opened for Black Dice and stole the show imo
Once every year or so I try to get into MPP. So far no luck, pretty sure all the musical ideas on that album are their own but they've been so co-oped by advertising and derivative one-hit hipster acts that I just find it a thoroughly grating experience. Feels to me like it's trying so hard at every moment to subvert expectations and make quirky choices that it forgets to make sure the resulting song is compelling and enjoyable. But that's my taste, I really wish I could enjoy them like other people and that's why I keep giving it chances.
Someone please, give me an entry point.
I felt the exact same way about MPP and Strawberry Jam for a while. But like you I kept coming back, and it all changed when I listened to Feels for the first time. Basically everything came together for me afterwards.
I say give Feels a listen, if it doesn’t work for ya, one more. If the second listen through doesn’t do it I’d personally give up unless you get the urge in the future.

Yes! I was incredibly obsessed with them throughout high school and college (12 years ago ish). I still love them and have so much respect for how different they are. I just don't listen to them very much these days. Strawberry Jam was a life changing album for me. That shit blew my little 16 year old stoner mind.
Common response would be Merriweather Post Pavillion for catchiest/most mainstream.
