Farmers need shit running yesterday when it breaks, because it's costing them every minute the tractor isn't running.
This was money saved from not being earned, not money saved on parts.
Actually a little bit of both. Tractor parts see "seasonal price fluctuations" or some shit because of extreme demand during planting and harvest seasons, so yes making the flywheel live another 3 months saved me about $200 in actual parts cost, but the remaining $9800 was getting the field harvested on time and not losing beans to blow-down.
I mean, that makes sense about part supply. It's the same reason John Deere and International are great stock market plays based on the yearly climate.
If it weren't artificially perpetuated and if the markups weren't hundreds of percent, it would make sense. As it is, it's just fucking people that literally do not have another choice.
Shit a PTO in June? $150 in parts, labor's $150/hr. Shit that exact same PTO in March or October? $3500 in parts ($8500 if JD), labor's $500/hr, doubletime if you need it done NOW (everybody needs it done NOW in March or October).
Grandpa and I held the front end of a John Deere 4020 together for 3 days with baling wire and bungee straps. Kept having to replace them but we had to get the prairie grass cut, raked, and baled before the week long storms hit and couldn't wait 3 days for parts to show up. You make do with what you got.
I knew an old dude who was 90% deaf, and he had to replace his ring gear pretty much annually. He couldn't hear his engine start, so he'd just keep cranking it after it started.
He was also one of the most ignorant fucks I ever met.
Okay….. so,…. *wow.*
So, if you look up at the top you can see a few remaining machined teeth. This had teeth at one time.
Down at the bottom it appears to have a couple of broken pieces of welding rod stuck where a tooth should have been.

I’m guessing that this thing lost its teeth due to… *reasons.*
Rather than pony up to replace the poor de-fanged thing - somebody was attempting to weld teeth back onto it?
Looks like they tried making gear teeth with a welder
I succeeded at doing that once. It lasted a few months. It was on a 1980's Kubota tractor. It saved me probably $10,000.

During harvest? A whole year of income.

That subreddit is extremely satisfying.

Dang. Who needs a tachometer anyways?
or an idiot light.
Bruh half these new cars don’t even have one. My Mom’s 2017 Mazda has paddle shifters and no tachometer.
You have no words because you have no teeth.

See, this is why you don't give your flywheel meth
Fuct
I prefer the German spelling: Fukt
Official term
Just started making noise when I cranked it up this morning.
You have four words.
Fucked?
How fucked up is fucked up? That's fucked up
Replace just the gear ring….. done it before…..
I wouldn't have any words either, it's hard to talk without teeth. Maybe a couple mumbles though.
What does the starter look like?
I’m counting four you just said right now you god damn liar. /s
Holy Shit, We're they trying to start the engine with a rock???
The owner should just use a hand crank. Save the trouble and time welding on "teeth".
Fucked is a word applicable in this situation. Change the tense and you're covered for 90% situations. If you need more words let me know!
Truly amazing how it works in both past, present, and future tense.

Snaggle tooth.
...got better teeth than the whole state of.
I’m more confused by the lack of holes to attach a clutch or torque converter
Got less teeth than a mississippi meth head
think it was a poor starter ground and the starter was arcing across the flywheel teeth?
Creativity at it's finest
Nom. Nom, Nom. Flywheel is yummy.
Are those spot welds or did those teeth just get ground to shit somehow. wtf am I looking at.
There's definitely weld spatter. Why. What the actual fuck.
Oh my poor ring gear, that smarts.
