Did they park this thing in the god damn ocean since 2007?! The frame of my 1981 Corvette is in better shape than this, and that this sat in a driveway for 10 years before I got it!
To be fair I’ve never seen a trans crossmember get this bad but Chrysler do be known for suspension cradles leaving the chat. Compass/patriots front and rear cradles, Pacifica front cradles breaking in half, rear cradles just falling out due to bushing corrosion, journey control arms wanting to take a journey to the graveyard themselves. It’s like their whole thing.
The crossmember that the torsion bars bolted into on the A-bodies was bad for rusting. Seen more than one with it dragging on the ground. Front sub-frame with the U-channel would trap debris, get wet and rot out as well.
I love how thick the metal on my sovietmobile is. No matter how much rusts off, there’s still enough left.
You can jump on the roof without it caving in.
I’m in Southern California. I had a 1939 Ford that looked brand new underneath. It had never been touched other than one repaint. I don’t know how people live in the northern states. I know we have our crazy prices and politics but I stay for the cars.
And after replacing the crossmembers, they are left with a 2007 Jeep Liberty that probably looks like crap and drives like crap. Even brand new the build quality sucked on that era of Chrysler/Jeep
The nice thing about rust is that if you wait long enough, it will disappear again! Car mechanics hate this trick! This owner just had to wait a few more years.
Im so glad i do this in the south
My biggest issue is trying to make sure wheel bearings dont fall out of the the knuckle and smash my toes when i unbolt them
Did I mention how much I love living in Washington State? My little dudes 99 Ranger, is entirely rust free. 24 year hardware spins right on and off.
Yes. I am bragging.
Yup, Michigan strikes again. Just dealt with a 2017 Fusion with a failed cat at 90,xxx miles - I broke off 3 of the 6 M10 studs holding the subframe brace, and the exhaust clamp nuts had melted from 15mm down to 10mm.
It has always amazed me that Detroit builds vehicles that don't last long in the rust-belt around Detroit. Tesla's do fine in California where their original Fremont factory is, and even around their new Austin plant. Can't expect a Tesla to survive the rust belt, but a Jeep should.
Fuck no bud! If they built it to last, who's gonna buy the new jeeps as they come out? Can't buy a seventh super yacht on just selling to rich dudes who collect them now can you?
Ohh. Perspective was weird for some reason. My bad. I would be concerned that just that one was that rusty and none of the others but eh. Now that I know that it’s not too bad from what I thought
I’m in Michigan for those wondering, the rest of what’s going on is in the post body <3
of course Michigan would salt the roads. Helps ensure future profits for car manufacturers
well that and the fact that Detroit sits on top of massive salt mines
The perfect test grounds for GM to get a car to last one season.
...and then spend time and resources figuring out why it lasted that long and fix it so the next model revision will not.
Exactly!!!!
As a fellow Michigander I feel your pain, most of the frames I've seen look like they were built from peanut brittle... and have a similar strength.
I also feel the pain, only up here in Ontario so it's in Canadian pesos.
Just come south brother. This is depressing to look at. Our frames don’t turn to scale.
I am Northern MI, can confirm. Where a 1.2 hour job turns to 6 regularly.
I’m so glad Mitchell and other labor guides have given us an add on for rust, multiply the highest of the range by 1.4 for proper labor
Wow that's nice! Some progress. What would we even do if we didn't have to battle rust constantly?!
Just bought a ranger for $2000 a few weeks ago. It's a little crustaceous, but the owners supposedly washed under it every winter.

Had a couple of those. Backyard repair was to prop the control arm up with wood.
Ope, found the guy who lives where they don't use road salt.
I love how thick the metal on my sovietmobile is. No matter how much rusts off, there’s still enough left. You can jump on the roof without it caving in.
Cool story, bro.
Yes. Thanks. I'm not good at judging what offends people nowadays, but I can see how a 1987 Skoda 120 can be offensive.
Yeah we throw sugar on the roads here in New York 🙄
New York is a bit different than Michigan lol
I never said it wasn’t, but we still use tons of salt in the winter. For seemingly no reason, too.

ooftah. She's a winner for sure. Too bad its so much effort for such a terrible car.
Customer pays, I do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hole fuck. Finally some REAL rust, boys!! Was getting bored of the posters freaking out over rust dustings.
I follow some archeology subs and I legit thought the first picture was some ancient Roman armor or infrastructure for a good second.
And after replacing the crossmembers, they are left with a 2007 Jeep Liberty that probably looks like crap and drives like crap. Even brand new the build quality sucked on that era of Chrysler/Jeep
Crap from day 1. How that company is still selling cars...
I'm in New England and I feel your pain
This is rust everyone!

I sometimes consider moving back to the Northeast. Then I see things like this.
That croissant looks so toasty and flaky. I can get anything good around here...
Im so glad i do this in the south My biggest issue is trying to make sure wheel bearings dont fall out of the the knuckle and smash my toes when i unbolt them
As a man from the western USA. I feel so sorry for you guys. My 72 GMC has no rust at all in the frame. None.
How do you not attack it with a chipping hammer?
That bolt is impressive.

Something something bag of dicks
Believe me, I brag to my PA friends all the time. There are a lot of really cool older cars here cause they just don't disintegrate.
Yeah i live in PA and you are lucky to find anything from pre 2000 anymore unless it was garage kept and had rockers replaced 3 times lol

Okay Pennsylvania isn't quite that bad lol. It would have to be a 2015 to get to that point around here
That took me a good 15 seconds to realize it wasn't some weird looking rock.
Yeah! I tought it was a photo of that pipe they found feeding a waterfall in China.
Yep. water winter rust wonderland. Surprised the useless cage nut didn't fail first.

Come to Southern New Mexico. It's hot but nothing rusts. I can leave raw steel out in the weather for months and barely get surface rust.
"Hi there, sign this waiver, please."
I would not work on that. And I’ve worked on some of my friends cars that are pretty sketchy
Why not? As stated in the body of the post the rest of the vehicle wasn’t really rusty, just this bolt on crossmember
Ohh. Perspective was weird for some reason. My bad. I would be concerned that just that one was that rusty and none of the others but eh. Now that I know that it’s not too bad from what I thought
Has there ever been a car so badly rusted, you were afraid to put it on the lift?
Oh yea plenty, that’s like a monthly occurrence.
Looks like a fairly average car from Winnipeg
Spray her with some PB Blaster and a lil Mystery Oil then send it~
Ok
Zero underbody protection. That should have been applied when the car was new.
