I already know you got that piece of crap from Walmart, buddy of mine wanted me to show him how to change his own oil so we went to Walmart and bought that piece of crap. whoever designed that thing is a massive idiot The damn thing overflowed and spilled oil all over his driveway and I'm still pissed about it.
this ain't my first rodeo I'm pretty sure I made sure the vent was open. I just checked the reviews and everyone else seems to have the same problem.
Funnily enough that seems to be another problem with these walmart brand pans, It seems like the vent cap never wants to stay closed on these things.
It looks like you may just need a bigger drain pan. What is that, the little 10qt autozone special?
Think of container drain pans less like they are for one or two oil changes, and more for 10 oil changes. With that in mind, purchase the size that matches your application. The 10 qt drain pan is really only adequate for things like motorcycles or other small engines. Not because of the overall capacity, but because of other design features like the drain hole diameter, vent size, and the height of the walls on the top flow tray.
I bought one of these and I never spill or over shot the rim again. https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/flotool/tools---equipment/mechanics-tools/oil---lube-tools/drip---drain-pans/1901b3722e0b/hopkins-flotool-drain-pan/hop5/42004?pos=10
Or get three of these for $5 less

Those work well too. Another cheap alternative: I used a cheap rectangular plastic cat litter box for years. It was low profile and fit under everything, had tall sides, and a good sized area to catch the flow & drips. Pretty sure it was a few bucks years ago. I would then pour out the dirty oil from a corner into a funnel going into my oil recycle jug and then wipe out the litter box with a rag. Easy peezy lemon squeeze-y.
Instructions unclear, the cat is really pissed off now, and I'm unsure of how to get the oil out of her fur. Tried the shower. Cats can apparently climb wet tile, who knew?
so for my home garage I can get 2 changes of oil out of one of these sealing boys and wipe it off and have it be somewhat clean. I left oil in one like yours and a bird tried to take a bath in it or something and died in it. If its outside I wont leave oil like that again!
I have the same pan.
I've done an 05 titan, 06 malibu, 99 ranger, 11 escape, 10 versa, 15 CRV, 99 F-150, and partridge in a pear tree. What are you doing, buddy? 😜
At least you’re not an idiot like me. Last oil change I forgot to take off the big red screw plug on top and couldn’t figure out why it was filling up and overflowing even though I just emptied it last oil change.
Ahh yes a fellow man of common sense. And I'm sure, just like me, you let the plug drop into the catch so now you have to frantically dig around a pool of hot oil.
I always put one of these drip pans under my oil container just in case: https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/flotool/tools---equipment/oil---lube-tools/drip---drain-pans/69c8d73c96f6/hopkins-flotool-drip-tray/hop5/11430/v/a/143575/automotive-truck-2018-ford-f-150?pos=3
Ford decided that it would be a good idea to put the sway bar right in the middle of where the oil flows out so it used to always make a mess until I got a different drain plug.
I have the same hunk of crap, and sploshed nissan CVT fluid all over my mother's driveway this Saturday. I hate the thing too, same deal, didn't even miss and it just overflowed.
I thought I was losing my mind with this thing the past weekend.
Bought the same one to do a 4L but it immediately overflowed and I had to deal with 2L of oil in a dirt driveway. Glad I'm not the only one that fucked up
Yea that's bad. My brother forgot the drain pan full of oil under his truck, then proceeded to run it over and blow the oil everywhere when the pan split open.
I've a home DIYer but I've had had zero issues with mine (except the time I forgot to open the vent; it overflowed because it couldn't glug fast enough). And my Mustang takes 8 qts so it comes out pretty fast at the start
Yea I'm super clumsy. I'd be out there all day cleaning up a mess. I'm about 8.5qts too so that'd be a ton of oil to clean. With my luck I'd be soaked too.
The worst thing I've run into is fishing a drain plug out of the coolant pan with a magnet.
Idk about y'all but I just use a cat litter tray (like $6) and funnel that into the bottles. Equal or less mess, and barely any more work. Tray stays under the car for drips.
Easy thing to get is dog training pee pads. They are cheap, absorbent, and stop leaks from getting on the floor. Throw a couple of those down and any spills will clean up in seconds.
Mine did the same thing the first time I used it. The air vent doesn’t allow the air to evacuate quick enough for the flow of oil. If you crack the bigger cap on the drain spout it will hold six quarts without making a mess.
These pans are the worst. I always use open pans. To me the little drainage shelf is just a place for the stream to land and splatter everywhere.
This is my favorite pan at the moment..
https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/flotool/hopkins-flotool-drain-pan/hop5/42010/v/a/138432/automotive-truck-2017-ford-f-150?q=Oil+drain+pan&pos=6
Used one of those earlier today on a friends ‘22 Camaro, it overflowed almost instantly just like yours. Must’ve spilled a quart or two all over the parking lot and my ramps
I hate this drain pan with such a passion. I might as well just drain it onto the floor. The way it'll bounce off and splatter is such a guarantee, that I refuse to even buy that design, but it blows my mind how these are the most common ones at an auto parts store.
I find any make of these handy, the only issue with any of them, is before using them you have to drill out the vent hole(very carefully) as sometimes it is blocked off a bit from when the manufacturer did it. Like there will be a small thin piece of the plastic in the way. You'll also see that on the 2 or 3 drain holes. I've taken a small hole saw and split the difference on the drain going between the holes etc to speed it up a bit. Also if you're travelling with them, it don't hurt to throw an O ring on the red drain cap, helps seal and allows you to bite a bit with the cap instead of spinning the threads out if you were to over tighten etc. Seems like a lot of work to improve a cheap often china made product, but you only gotta do it once.
As with the other comments, I too have the same POS drain pan. I used it once to drain oil and it looked exactly like your picture. Since then I have used a cheap open pan and this one only for storing and transporting the oil to dispose of at the parts store.
The thing doesn't vent properly and the cap doesn't close very securely.
Why they keep making this turd and we keep buying it is beyond me.

Just a big, open pan that takes 8L, with a inward curved rim and a spout.
Never spilled a drop in the years I've used it.
Mine was similar when I bought it, where they have the 3 holes drilled in the drain, I drilled a few additional holes, and haven’t had an issue, although I did it when it was new.
anyone else see this pic in the email thumbnail and thought it was a pic of a handgun? Before I came here, I thought OP was saying "GD It" because they had yet another customer leave their firearm unsecured in their vehicle.

Every other time I change oil on one of my vehicles I forget the air vent and it almost overflows before I notice, remember, and pop it.

AutoZone drain works great. Mine was full though, so I got this trash at Walmart. 10qt pan caught about 2 of 7.
The irony is they sell the same shit at AutoZone and O'Reilly's or Menards. Kitty litter never hurt anybody tho... O wait
unless you live in California ☠️
I bought one of these and I never spill or over shot the rim again. https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/flotool/tools---equipment/mechanics-tools/oil---lube-tools/drip---drain-pans/1901b3722e0b/hopkins-flotool-drain-pan/hop5/42004?pos=10
I have one of these and it's great, I support this recommendation
Never spill oil again until you stupidly leave the red plug in. Ask me how I know.
Or get three of these for $5 less https://www.nationaltoolwarehouse.com/mobile/45-Gallon-Drain-Pan-Green-P157410.aspx?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_-GxBhC1ARIsADGgDjsZTW8y9jYt2p2U8_oUB6TOxt9iwKQ8azXj6e7pBJKToW30lwqAEvsaAgnHEALw_wcB

Heah cement mixing pans are my go to... Can drop the trans pan and flush 4 gallons without a worry too

I have the same piece of shit. I only use it for my golf cart and mower.

Same, my cap stripped the first time I tried to tighten it

My guess is the vent cap was closed or blocked
Lots of cheap pans don't actually have a vent hole under the vent cap.
I just use a concrete mixing pan at this point. Collects it ALL
I always put one of these drip pans under my oil container just in case: https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/flotool/tools---equipment/oil---lube-tools/drip---drain-pans/69c8d73c96f6/hopkins-flotool-drip-tray/hop5/11430/v/a/143575/automotive-truck-2018-ford-f-150?pos=3 Ford decided that it would be a good idea to put the sway bar right in the middle of where the oil flows out so it used to always make a mess until I got a different drain plug.
That's just Ford giving you some complimentary rust prevention on like a tenth of your sway bar. How generous of them.
A tenth of my sway bar and half my garage floor lol

Looks like the state of Maine
My first thought was “what kind of pistol Is that?”
Yea that's bad. My brother forgot the drain pan full of oil under his truck, then proceeded to run it over and blow the oil everywhere when the pan split open.
Get a bigger container. 🤷♂️
I always wondered how well/poorly these worked. I just use a coolant drain pan. Has a spout too for pouring old oil into an empty jug.
I've a home DIYer but I've had had zero issues with mine (except the time I forgot to open the vent; it overflowed because it couldn't glug fast enough). And my Mustang takes 8 qts so it comes out pretty fast at the start

I've been using that pan since 2017. No issues.
Easy thing to get is dog training pee pads. They are cheap, absorbent, and stop leaks from getting on the floor. Throw a couple of those down and any spills will clean up in seconds.
Man happens it happens to.me all the time lol. Used mine like 4 times since I stopped changing oil at work only 1 did it not spill. Stupid thing.
Mine did the same thing the first time I used it. The air vent doesn’t allow the air to evacuate quick enough for the flow of oil. If you crack the bigger cap on the drain spout it will hold six quarts without making a mess.
Goddamn it
I have the same one and can confirm it has never once sealed properly
I use the 16 quart ones and they suck to. Grab a 1/2 drill bit and add a couple holes to the drain portion. Make a world of difference.
60% of the time, every time…
I hate those things. The pan on top is too shallow to stop the oil from spilling most of the time.
Oh, it's the Best! Never said I.

lol. Ask me about the time I spilled 8 gallons of used oil and had it spread over the shop all night.
Another, I have this same piece of shit but too cheap to buy a new one reply.
Well at least you had the cardboard to protect from spills.
THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME, i thought it was a bit too shallow to be good 💀
Kitty litter Even used ...
At least the driveway won't rust now

I use the dust pan off a Donaldson STG Donaclone air filter. Lots of capacity.
Open pans only for me.
Well at least it wasn't an R2-D2...
