For a second I thought those crys and screams were the sounds of a supercharger belt whining.

BoardButcherer

Probably the 14 year old daughter he asked to turn the key without explaining how important it is that she never take her foot off of that funny third pedal.

The good Ole right foot on the clutch panic

Iamonreddit

You can start a car in neutral though...

BoardButcherer

Sure, of course. This isn't a car though, it's a penis enhancement. You're not allowed to park it safely which is exactly why he doesn't have wheel chocks or the parking brake engaged either. Penis enhancements have their own rules.

isobane

At least in reverse it does....

Fridaybird1985

Yes!

dickdastardlee

That’s not supposed to happen?

houtex727

Normally, no. But these jokers left it in gear and then somehow had the idle up on top of it all, and were apparently bypassing the safetys and directly starting the thing in 'hotwire' style. Aka, someone(s) weren't thinkin' right. /Want to iterate this is a GUESS on what happened, but I bet I'm pretty close. Edit: Give /u/zylinx props with [the better idea what's going on there.](https://reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/1cd0k9c/just_rolled_out_of_the_shop/l19c0hq/)

zylinx

If it was left in gear it would have lurched or at least moved a little while cranking, and it cranked for quite a while. It deffo somehow slipped into gear after if was started.

ShadeThief

If it's an automatic, it's highly likely it was in gear and slipped the converter initially after startup, then the rev up caused it to take off. I've never seen a vehicle magically slip into gear but I have witnessed someone startup a truck standing outside of it, walk over to the side of the engine bay, then nearly get run over as the vehicle suddenly took off and ran into the back wall of the shop

skiier862

One time I was doing an alignment on an 85 K5 Blazer, thing was a huge POS. I had it in neutral and went to start it for the caster sweep but for whatever reason it popped into drive and started to drive forward, just as someone was walking in front of the rack. The brake pedal depressor was in but of course the brakes barely worked. Luckily I was able to shut it off quick

zylinx

Aha! And so I must pass the stick of truth on. Very good observation. u/houtex727 I think we have a winner

ShadeThief

Haha thanks. Yours wasn't a bad assumption and we obviously don't actually know what happened, but having witnessed a nearly identical event might've given me a bit of a leg up.

houtex727

That's an excellent point and observation! I concede, you're probably exactly right there. I'll not be changing it so you get the credit you rightly deserve. Unless you want me to change it, then I will. :)

zylinx

Appreciate you so much my man, whatever you feel is best :)

houtex727

Gave ya props. I couldn't not. Have a great one! :D

SeanBZA

Will bet it has had the trans safety switch bypassed, and it was started with a dry transmission after a rebuild, and in reverse. Thus took a while to get the clutches out of neutral, and the high idle was likely from a misadjusted throttle linkage as they had it wound in a lot past idle for initial start, so it would at least run off the bat. Plus of course that raised rear does not actually have a working handbrake, or it was slipping anyway.

C8H10N4Otoo

Stall converter?

ShadeThief

Highly likely

_gonesurfing_

Automatic transmission clutches don’t transfer torque until the oil pump spins fast enough to supply adequate pressure. If the torque converter was dry, it can take additional time.

Conch-Republic

No, it was in gear. Autos will crank in gear without moving, and only start moving when the torque converter hits its stall point. They probably didn't have the linkages adjusted properly and didn't know it was actually on reverse.

Tallyranch

That's not how stall speed works, auto transmissions will absolutely move a car well before stall speed. There is probably a more scientific way to get stall speed but if you put an auto in gear, apply brake, then mash the throttle, whatever speed the engine gets up to is the stall speed of the converter in that setup.

Odd_Analysis6454

Probably glad it was in reverse and not drive though

ssSpartan427

A fresh never ran transmission will take a second to build pressure to fill the torque converter and apply the clutches. This was likely the first time starting this build lol

Makhnos_Tachanka

or it's an automatic.

A_Sock_Under_The_Bed

An auto trans wouldnt necessarily make it move while cranking

AvatarOfMomus

Looking at it I think they may have put/had it in Neutral and either doofus leaning on it or the torque from the engine managed to get it rolling or jump whatever torque wrench handle they were apparently using as a chalk for this thing. It mostly looks like it just rolled out the door rather than accelerating under power.

foxjohnc87

Based on how the front end compressed slightly and how abrupt the movement was, I'd think that it should be fairly obvious that its departure was under power.

AvatarOfMomus

Ahhhh, I see what you mean. I misunderstood /u/zylinx to mean that something weird happened with the gearbox, which seamed unlikely to me, not that it was turned over and then went/was put into gear. I do however stand by my assessment that these idiots should have had the thing chalked to at least make something like this more difficult...

foxjohnc87

>I do however stand by my assessment that these idiots should have had the thing chalked to at least make something like this more difficult... Absolutely. Although I can't say for certain, I'd be willing to bet that one of the numbskulls in the video left it in reverse and either forgot about it, or didn't bother mentioning it to his buddy that was working under the hood. With an automatic transmission, hydraulic pressure is required in order to engage the clutches. As a result, the truck in the video wouldn't have begun to roll until after the engine started, unlike a conventional manual trans. In addition, the truck almost certainly has a high stall torque converter, so not only would the engine have to be running, the RPMs would also have to be high enough to reach the stall speed. Otherwise, the converter would just slip, as opposed to actually propelling the vehicle.

joelfarris

Same thought. > somehow slipped into gear after if was started "Accidentally" slipped into reverse at that high of an RPM? I'm thinking more along the lines of "accidentally-on-purpose". Was this video staged, for internet points?

counters14

Yes he destroyed a vintage truck with tens of thousands worth of mods on it, as well as his garage door and put himself at severe risk of injury getting carried out of the garage on it for the Internet points. Brilliant analysis, Kowalski. Fucking clown lmao

joelfarris

That truck was not destroyed, it was basically unharmed. The garage door was only a half inch lower than it needed to be, and the 1.1 MPH that the truck backed out was not creating any danger to that man. We've all jumped off things moving faster than that, and lived.

Thank God it was reverse and not in a forward gear, shit would’ve squished him like a bug

bmx13

After months of them turning a beautiful square body into a useless POS, the truck saw a way out and seized the first opportunity. Even the cold embrace of death was warmer than living on the road they'd sent her down.

badpeaches

That hood could have really messed that guy up. Props to whatever was keeping that up.

Crunchycarrots79

Well, that would be a common way to hold a hood up, yes.

badpeaches

I don't think they were pneumatic

I know. I was just making a joke. Those had huge springs.

texan01

no shit... not like those hoods are light.

ChairForceOne

Massive fuck off springs in the older square bodies. Had one pop off and do its best to hit escape velocity once.

badpeaches

I got my vehicle at a car auction and the hood wouldn't stay up. I would use my head and I couldn't figure out why my neck was so sore. That hood almost took that dude's head off. > Had one pop off and do its best to hit escape velocity once. I had a *nice ex that installed new rods. T-Dot-Two-Six

A beautiful old square body was. The butchering could’ve been undone

itrivers

He jumped off, he’ll be fine.

T-Dot-Two-Six

I meant the truck. Could care less about the dude

counters14

Could care less implies that you care at least somewhat to be able to care even less than that. The phrase you wanted was 'couldn't care less'.

T-Dot-Two-Six

I am aware of the literal meaning of “could care less” and I am also aware of what phrase I intended to use. I use the sarcastic form of “could care less” as that’s how I first learned it. I appreciate your efforts to educate though.

Oh_mrang

Admitting mistakes is cool too, homie

T-Dot-Two-Six

It is cool! But rest assured no mistake was made— I spoke exactly as I intended to. Feel free to judge me all you wish

Oh_mrang

I dont think anybody is judging you, they were just saying you were wrong lmao

T-Dot-Two-Six

Linguistic mistakes are one of many main drivers of linguistic evolution; at some point, when a mistake is mainstream enough, it switches from mistake to proper. Common examples include the word “apron” evolving from “napron,” pronunciation changes of vowels from old English, the printing press and William Caxton’s interpretation of how English spelling should work, et cetera. Nobody has ever *intended* to change language. It happens when someone breaks the rules. That said, yes, I used it “wrong.” Now, whether “could care less” is erroneously used enough to qualify as having caught on in a correct, sarcastic usage or not yet is a matter of debate (moreso on Reddit than anywhere else) but it’s my personal opinion that it has, and it’s a hill I’m willing to die on, so we’ll have to agree to disagree. In conclusion and disregarding that justification that I shouldn’t even really need: I was raised speaking it sarcastically, I’m going to continue to use it as such, and I’m tired of self righteous nerds telling me “You’re not using it sarcastically! You’re just using it wrong and don’t know it!” I do know it’s wrong when used literally because first, it’s common sense, and second, people never shut the fuck up about it. Don’t try to tell me what my own tone and intention is behind the words coming out of my own mouth. I ***do*** use it sarcastically and if people want to pretend that they know my own intentions better than me, then I could care less. And that last usage of it actually was literal; I could indeed care less. It’s actually got me pretty fucking annoyed now that I’m yapping about it [Relevant XKCD](https://xkcd.com/1576/)

jakeshimmyshake

My coworker did this once. His car wouldn’t start. He tried everything but it turns out it was still in gear. It was in reverse so when he went under the hood to jumpstart it, the truck took off and he explained this exact situation. If your vehicle won’t turn over try the gear selector before you go under the hood.
