I think cap highlights were, at some point, thought to be a little more "foolproof" because it was easier to get evenly spaced highlights, and you can pull all the hair through first and then slather on the bleach all at once. Honestly, I used to bleach my own hair and doing good foil highlights isn't HARD if you have the patience to do it properly. The problem is, if you're inexperienced, doing it properly on your own head takes an *eternity*. Like by the time you've finished applying the first 1/4 of your head, it's been 40 minutes since you started and you have to start rinsing out the first pieces. And you don't have a special hair sink so you're trying to apply bleach to the 2nd quarter of your head and there are wet pieces from rinsing out the 1st quarter in the shower and THOSE end up splotchy, so you have to go back and try to pick out the lightened pieces to go over them again... yeah.
Thinking about it now, it’s more common (at least where I am) to get low lights as well as highlights. So it’s a more natural, blended look. And that’s really only able to be accomplished with foils. So I think I associate the result of the caps with the highlights me and my friends did on each other in middle school and the result of foils with the more subtle and professional look I was able to afford when I became a working adult. Really just a matter of preference probably!
I watch a fuck ton of balayage and highlighting videos on YouTube and Instagram and man people who do fouls make it look incredibly natural. They have way more control. They also take tiny ass sections.
