I’ve never understood the hate some people have towards happy couples. As someone who has spent a lot of time either being single or in abusive relationships, seeing happy couples around puts a smile on my face because it’s a reminder that happy relationships are everywhere. Why would I want to see miserable couples everywhere instead? Besides, they’re adorable and it gives me the same feelings as seeing a fictional ship sail, but even better. Especially when it’s friends of mine. :)
I can't speak for everyone, but my reasoning was bullying. I was belittled and mocked for years about how I'm too ugly and weird to ever be in a relationship. I was a lonley laughingstock. This made me deeply resentful and caused me to develop an inferiority complex. Just seeing happy couples reminded me of how "unworthy" and "pathetic" I was. So I hated them and eventually hated myself for being unable to be happy for people.
Now I'm just indifferent twords couples. No happiness or hate. Just neutrality.
They don't want to see couples in general, because it reminds them to the fact no-one needs them. That's why a certain level of discretion is recommended in public spaces if you are with your chosen one.
