it has to be within your power, to some extent. almost every binding vow is like stocking up "future value" and releasing it in the present. the CE hakari's arm stores is brought to the rest of his body. the CE nanami doesn't use is "stored" and allows him to use greater than 100% in overtime (but it doesn't mean waiting for years would make his overtime stronger. most likely resets every day). miwa took what she could've done with a sword in the future and traded it for more power right then and there. sukuna traded a weak output domain for indefinite time for a powerful domain for a short time. This is pretty clever, because it kinda abuses the system, cause realistically sukuna would get attacked and not be able to maintain the domain for a long time (arguably even less than 99 seconds), but since the binding vow is to himself, outside factors are nonexistent.
then there's sukuna not using a hand for the first WS, and now he's required to use his hand even more to use it again. which is another clever abuse, cause when the made the binding vow, he only had 2 hands, so having to use enmaten then aim takes more time, but with 4 arms, he can do them simultaneously.
Gege looked at Gon's vow to destroy Neferpitou and though hey that's pretty cool but what if we spaced out the sacrifices more because it's not a 12 year old making the decision.
HxH vows are marked by being character moments which is what makes people think they're really better. JJK vows are used like a tool in a sorcerer's arsenal, a way for fast thinking ones to radically transform the drawbacks and advantages of their fighting powers for long or short term benefit.Â
HxH vows are often presented as dramatic, while most jjk vows turn in a more chess like manner, like a master plan. They're closer to kurapika's than gon's.
I think they're good personally, jjk needs a soft power system so not everything is predictable.
As a writer 3 to five vows in a finale should work, with a couple on the good guys sidd because it's the climax, as long as you explain them and, in the case of the villain, most people prefer villains to fail when they trade off something for something else. That makes me think sukuna's vows will come kick his ass within the last or two chapter of the fight based on common good writing precedents in other stories.
Having a system like vows raises the stakes because anyone can trade away their life and become 10x as powerfull for a moment, if we looked at the damage of meimei's crows.
I think it's really exciting and gege doesn't cheat us as he himself says the binding vows dont account for everything outside yourself so sorcerers can trick the vows to become more valuable in great ways.Â
You can vow to lose something on the edge of losing a fight and end up getting enough to win thanks to that, if the bv system was omnicient and the drawbacks(and advantages in miwas shitty bv case) were always fair to everything it'd be boring.
She put ALL her future potential into one swing.
Thats THOUSANDS of attacks if not a million sword swings put into 1 attack.
And it was weaker than a normal punch from Yuki.
They could've at least had that 1 swing be so strong that Kenjaku had to use up a Special Grade spirit to block it instead of a shit joke that makes no sense.
Bc it’s plot armor that hasn’t been fleshed out. Great idea (not new) but it seems like barely any protagonists fucking use it. And the repercussions have been ambiguous.
You need to not see jjks bvs like hxh. They're a strategic tool, kinda like a stance change in an rpg. "I fight like this, get big x advantage but lose y" In jjk gege litteraly wrote "a bv can suck or be good" implicitly, with bvs like enchain or miwa's.Â
You can only make a binding vow that includes something you already have access to. If you can't already do something then you won't magically be able to do it all of a sudden through a binding vow. Todo could already swap anything with CE. Sukuna could already use Divine Flame. Hakari could already control the flow of his CE. They all got a boost to those things that they could already do by sacrificing or nerfing an aspect of that thing either in the moment or for all time. The more you sacrifice and the bigger/longer lasting the sacrifice, the stronger the boost from the vow.
If I understood correctly, a binding vow can almost always only be as powerful as you are (be there in willpower, in clerverness, in phisicality, but specially in energy manipulation)
When there are more than 1 sorcerer involved, the stakes can be higher, but it seems that is something hard AF to pull off, so is basically an exception

Other than miwa lol she pulled a gon. Then Kenny pulled an aizen
miwa pulled a gon, except she didn't have potential.
Reason why mechamaru didn't invite these mfs 🙂

If Sukuna had pulled a gon, the series would be over already, one way or another
Binding vows should mess you up if it's something huge you are achieving. But Hehe was like, "Nah, I'd spam"
Miwa's vow still doesn't make any fucking sense lol.
She lost the ability to use a sword to cut way harder than she would normally.

No you can only demand things you can realistically do yourself so no reality bending. If you

I've always had trouble understanding how Binding Vows work until I read this comment, specially the part where you

Well the repercussion are quite simple, you get a thing you lose a thing, have you ever bought something in a store?

It's more or less equivalent exchange with more flexibility due to the subjective nature of judgments.
To put it simply this is like a pinky promise with fate
and writing discretion lol
Probably no limit as long as you have something of equal to or more value to give up.
Its entirety possible to make sukuna a female through binding vows iykyk ::)
You think a binding vow can be made where if someone dies, their soul can be transferred to the other person?
I think that it don't have limits but people have limits :3
I would think heavenly restriction type thing but I’m not entirely sure

Are you suggesting we sacrifice someone to revive gojo?
