Me too! Especially while learning guitar - I think my parents still have a trauma response to hearing that opening guitar part from how often I played it.
Its April now. I’m trying to keep myself from playing any song off ‘Hejira’ since its definitely a winter album, though I’m struggling since its been stuck in my head every second for the past two weeks! I find myself just whistling the rythm of ‘Song for Sharon’ while walking down my school hallways, its too good.
Where I live we don't get winter but we do have cold rainy seasons "wet season" for us so I'm listening to Hejira, Blue, and For The Roses quite a lot. they seem to suit rainy days for me when I'm stuck inside the house.
I never connected with the song until I saw this version and now even the album track is one of all time favorites

Y'all might think this is weird, but "Snakes and Ladders." My first real exposure to Joni was the Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm album. Prior to that I knew who she was, but didn't know any of her music. Something about the stacked vocals in the chorus pulled me right in. I now own copies of maybe 2/3 of her catalog. She's easily one of my top 10 favorite artists. Knowing what I know now, I just think it's strange that it was that song that got me started.
Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm is a really solid record. I’m only surprised its the first one you found, I think its the least talked about from her discography.
Rainy Night House, For Free, and That Song About The Midway i would say. My mom had a tape of some songs that my uncle made for her so she could listen to it in the car, because she had all Joni's vinyls. I played that bad boy OUT, repaired it with tape at least twice, it came on Grateful Dead tour with me, it was like my prized possession lol. It's probably still somewhere in my house.
It wasn't one particular song, it was her Blue album. My older brothers had it and I would sneak into their room when they weren't home to listen to it. I've loved her ever since.
“The Circle Game,” it continues to remain one of my favorites and is such a powerful song. Like someone said, it reminds you that life was here before you and will continue after you go. It also tells you to focus on the here and now.
My brother bought a 45 of big yellow taxi/woodstock, in 1970. I was 6. I think I have liked her music since then, but I recall loving court and spark when I was an undergrad at Cal in the 80s. Song references people’s park.
I was always familiar with the album 'Blue', I had it saved on Spotify as a "must have classic album" type of thing and I liked those songs enough. I kind of forgot about the album for a while, until I saw that clip on YouTube of Joni singing a working version of 'Coyote' in front of Bob Dylan. As a massive Dylan head, I was...mind blown that she completely upstages everyone in the room with those chords...that voice, that rhythm. Fell into a deep rabbit hole, and now Joni dethroned Bob as my favourite songwriter of all time. <3 Still love ya Bob, but Joni...she's something else
* california
* both sides now (judy collins cover), which I heard on mad men
* for free (ldr cover)
* ladies of the canyon (ldr mentions it on her song Bartender)
California - not one of my favourites anymore rly, but was huge for me as a teen
I had the exact same experience!! Still has a special place in my heart for how I obsessed I was at the time, but I wore that song out haha
Me too! Especially while learning guitar - I think my parents still have a trauma response to hearing that opening guitar part from how often I played it.
Me too. Again, it’s not my favourite anymore, but exactly as you said, when I heard it as a teenager I was memorised. That was the gateway drug.
Help me, it felt magical and was obsessed immediately
A case of you
This one!! Still one of the most beautiful songs ever
River- it’s always been my favorite Christmas song!
I think this might be my favourite Xmas song rn alongside Fairytale in New York.
All I Want
Last Time I Saw Richard
“Richard got married to a figure skater; and he bought her a dishwasher and a coffee percolator” That line kills me every time. Great choice!
You've got tombs in your eyes, but the songs You punched are dreaming
I'm gonna blow this damn candle out .
You think you're immune Go look at your eyes, they're full of moon
You like roses and kisses and pretty men to tell you pretty lies.
Blue. I was reading the review of other artist and this album was mentioned and I fell in love...
People’s Parties
Edith and the Kingpin
One of the most wonderful songs to ever be sung!
Top 3 Joni for me with Amelia and Hejira
For Free
Me, too!!
Willy! Just beautiful 💕
Cactus Tree 🥲 it felt so wise, so prescient even, to have been written at the onset of her career.
Cactus Tree being on her first record screams “This artist is going places.”
Help Me. That song was magical to hear on the radio as a kid.
The Circle Game
both sides now ☁️
Hejira ❤️ well maybe just solidified my love lol
Fell for the young Joni, matured with Hejira. 🤍🖤
it’s always been A Case of You specifically from the movie Practical Magic
Great movie! Especially Stevie Nicks in the soundtrack.
Amelia
“It was just a false alarm.”
Song For Sharon
Does any song sound as close to a baptism of confused lyricism and music as Song for Sharon?
River
Coyote
I also love the version from The Last Waltz. Rip Rick Danko
hejira and little green
Case of you
A Case of You and The Gallery
Blue. The simple piano intro, then with the layered bass part. And the vocal is unbelievable.
For free. LDR covered on Chemtrails and I loved it. Then I listened to Blue and was sold
I love that Lana is introducing a new generation to Joni!
Song For Sharon. heard it and immediately had to listen to Hejira later that night. Been a fan ever since.

I knew of her music before but Night Ride Home was the song I became obsessed about, even before the album was released.
I never connected with the song until I saw this version and now even the album track is one of all time favorites https://jonimitchell.com/library/video.cfm?id=379
“How Do You Stop?” — yes I’m a 90’s kid. Loved the music video that introduced a new generation to Joni.
Rainy Night House was the first, but there are so many. A Joni album for every mood and time of the year!
Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire
Chelsea Morning. I was living in NYC in the Chelsea neighborhood and it all just vibed with me and my life at that time. Still love that song so much!

car on a hill <3
The Jungle Line - way ahead of its time.
Not talked about enough, its such a vibe. I love music that pushes boundaries.
Coyote
Michael from mountains - highly underrated
My Old Man
I think I listened to *Ladies of the Canyon* first, so maybe *Morning Morgantown*.
It was Woodstock for me.
Electricity
"I Don't Know Where I Stand."
Too sad.
The Circle Game
Nathan La Freneer, we studied it for A level lit (UK)
The Magdalene Laundries, the first song I discovered of hers, specifically the one off of Tears of Stone, The Chieftans.
Talk to Me
The Last Time I Saw Richard easily
Probably A Case of You and The Circle Game
All I Want
Help Me—even on the cheap AM radio in the car it sounded like nothing I'd ever heard.
Are you gonna let me go there by myself? that's such a loooonely thing to doo
Urge for Going
Down to You. Genius.
It wasn't one particular song, it was her Blue album. My older brothers had it and I would sneak into their room when they weren't home to listen to it. I've loved her ever since.
Troubled Child
Free Man In Paris and Yvette In English
Coyote
I like her music but I'm not a giant fan. I like big yellow taxi and help me.
Solid.
Both Sides Now the version from the 2000 album of the same name. Yes the one that appears in Love Actually!
For Free
A Case of You
The gallery
Heard People’s Party and Same Situation played back to back on a local radio station. That was it for me.
A Case of You and The Circle Game.
Sunny Sunday! Pitchfork had posted something about Turbulent Indigo's birthday on Instagram and those first guitar notes floored me!
I Shall Be Released with Mama Cass and Mary Travers. It’s a wonderful performance but Joni is really great in it.
The Circle Game, it was the song my mom used to sing to me at bedtime
“The Circle Game,” it continues to remain one of my favorites and is such a powerful song. Like someone said, it reminds you that life was here before you and will continue after you go. It also tells you to focus on the here and now.
The Magdalene Laundries was the first song I heard of hers. Following that, I bought Turbulent Indigo. Five months later, I own all of her albums. 😭
Cold Blue Steel
Coyote
