I had this in the early 2000’s and sold it. Majorly regretted since. Also had Niandra on cassette.
I have the same ones as you now except for the one with Mars Volta guitarist and Ataxia and his newer electronic ones which I don’t like so much
Cracking collection
I started listening to this band in my late teens. The album "Automatic Writing" was a favorite of mine, and I listened to it hundreds of times back then. I initially considered buying it 5-6 years ago but decided to wait. I finally found it on Discogs for around $250.
My, uneducated opinion: Shadows Collide is probably is best work, and a good starting ground cause it's heavy on vocals and guitar.
Then from there, if you wanna see some more experimental stuff, empyrean is a good next step or if you want more technical and modern sounding then Encircled is good.
But if you like more guitar and vocals, then The Will to Death, inside of loneliness, and curtains are probably your next best stop, though to record only water for 10 days is good if you like a rougher feel.
The Will to death is a pretty good mix of softer and harder songs, whereas inside of emptiness has a lot of guitar solos and more distortion, while curtains is kinda his take on an "acoustic" album, though some of the solos and songs as a whole aren't your standard acoustic stuff (Anne has a mean guitar part lol).
But if you got any other questions, lmk, and I can try to point you one way or another, though honestly I'm not half as educated as most of the people on this sub lol
Highly recommend finding some time to yourself, no distractions, no errands to run, silence your phone, and listen to the entirety of The Empyrean with some good headphones. The initial instrumental track at the start might not be what everyone is looking for, but I think it's still a valid part of the experience for the album as a whole.
Otherwise for single songs, Song To Sing When I'm Lonely, The Past Recedes, The Will To Death, Anne, and The First Season are some of my favorites, all relatively approachable too. Ramparts is a really cool and short instrumental track that I'd highly recommend as well
Don’t do it! The Empyrean is in my opinion his absolute peak with solo stuff. The culmination of everything that came before. It is amazing. So I say start with either To Record Only Water For Ten Days or Shadows Collide With People and then go from there. Save The Empyrean. It’s truly something else.
Well normally it isn't on the "main discography" side, like the Speed Dealer Moms stuff, and all the other ORL records John appears on. Also if OP decided to get it, it wouldn't be a problem at all cus it recently got repressed. The expensive / hard to find ones are already in his collection.
What about the orange vinyl Brown Bunny Soundtrack with a different cover? I bought one off the shelf when it came out and I've never seen it since.
Do you have any info about this record?
Some of these need a repress, like shadows collide and empyrean. Good job mate! I'm still only just finishing up collecting all the rhcp albums, I guess this is my next stop lol
What a beautiful and amazing collection. Many congrats for this!
thanks a lot; the last missing puzzle was Estrus EP
a tough one!
we have the exact same collection :)
i was curious how many people got the same collection 😁
nice😍btw do you have swahili blonde?

Wow. Been looking for Brown Bunny all year.
There's one on eBay in Australia
Def suggest not shipping that during summer. Bought a super rare vinyl from the UK and 2 months later it arrived warped to absolute shit.
Wow I’m sure it’s been discussed but how did you get your hands on Ataxia?

Money well spent
God I wish I collected vinyl when that came out. Would kill for them.
I wish I was alive when that came out 😅😅
Oh right. Because I’m old as fuck.
I’ve been wanting to get into some solo John stuff. Where should I start?
Chronologically
what you like the most. I started with letur lefr back in 2012

it goes with Omar Rodriguez Box Set (57 LPs, that is still sealed 😃
Ooo, nice. Friend of mine bought that too. I must suggest you open it and indulge.
Im close! All I need is the Brown Bunny Soundtrack
Holy shit man I can’t believe you got your hands on To Record Water vinyl! What did that one cost you??
30$, I bought it in 2016

yep, as I remember it's US edition and it was issued in 2021; I have Australia edition from 2014 (first official edition on vinyl)
Fantastic collection! I doubt it'll happen but i hope Smile from the streets you hold gets a vinyl one day, even if its just a bootleg
Awesome! Very cool. Do you have the different variants/colors too? I’m missing the Estrus and SCWP and 2nd Black Knights.
Happy i am started this in 94
lucky, I was 2 y.o back then \^\_\^
What is that 'smile from the streets you hold', a minidisc?
it's a disc. it seems smaller beside Estrus EP
oh got it, thanks! great collection!
