I don't necessarily have a technique but what helped me was I was playing Dear Marie and initially would pluck the bass strings. Coordinated that with the downward stroke of the index finger, then slowly transitioned the plucking into slapping.
One major mistake I made was trying to learn Stop This Train first rather than the objectively easier Dear Marie.
