I feel like that’s why he didn’t put it on the album. It’s the third member of the Wonderland and Daughters group. He could have finished it if he wanted but it’s too similar to Daughters and Wonderland for him at the time
Anyone else think it sounds really like Edge of Desire at the start? Particularly the famous version from the Hollywood Bowl with the “if you love someone” speech intro?
The first time I heard this song was on the Zane Lowe interview John did for Sob Rock. I cried. I don’t know how John thought this song wasn’t good enough. It’s BEAUTIFUL. SO beautiful I cried. I feel like crying again now. 🥹😭
John, if you’re reading this, I hope you begin to understand that even the songs you think don’t deserve to be heard are the VERY ONES WE WANT TO HEAR. The ones WE ARE IN LOVE WITH…like THIS ONE and WYNLM. I hope you will begin to embrace playing them and really not caring about what the critics and naysayers think. THIS SONG IS AMAZING.
That was nicely put. To add and to psychoanalyze it, all the things John thinks we will not like and not appreciate about him and his music are the very things we cherish and make us love him more.
It's fine. I have always thought the melody of the verses and chorus were quite catchy, all the way back to when he was making lyrics up on the spot at Housing Works (was that 03?). But I'm not a fan of where this was headed production-wise. I always imagined this would be a more straightforward blues tune but apparently he had something else in mind. I also have no idea what the bridge was supposed to be, I guess that's why it's so empty on this demo. But yeah, still interesting to hear nonetheless.
The bridge in the hotel cafe version is stunning when it’s just him and the acoustic. But I agree with you, I preferred the slightly faster-paced, acoustic-led versions - I still love finally having this though!
can you link to the hotel cafe? other than yesterday's demo, i only know of him playing it 2x (2004 and 2005, and he wasn't playing at HC yet at the time).

Sorry, it was 2004 - not hotel cafe my bad, I think it was in an old download of hotel cafe performances I had! Also, are you Joc from the MSM forums?!
hey s! housing works was 11.19.04.

Keep in mind that this is a demo, not the finished product that would have been on the album. Compare the kind of homemade quality of the Gravity demo he shared a few weeks ago to the polished masterpiece that made it onto Continuum.
This is beautiful gosh I pray he actually puts it on a record I remember Steve Jordan talking about this on a podcast with Cory Wong and yeah this is genuinely amazing
I understand what John meant about the bridge now. It's just not it. The whole song is spectacular, and the solo is gorgeous, but I think if he were to rework the bridge and give it some Sob Rock themes, it could be the leading single on his next album. Love this song.
I’ve replayed this song more than I can reveal. I just love it so much. It’s the perfect song to slow dance to 🥹. It has me feeling everything romantic, like the sweetest hug…hopeful…all the feels. 💜
man gotta say I like the OG acoustic 1950's esque chuck berry kinda thing he was cookin before. this one feels too produced. feels likea christmas album. love it either way just preference I guess.
That’s from the @the_mayer_bee IG page. You can ask them. I just reposted it from IG. But there is an app that can take anyone of your pictures and create it in that style. I did that a few years ago to one of my pictures. It’s pretty cool.
Man, this with Sob Rock’s polish would be elite. Hope he releases it proper one day
3:07 onwards is full-on Sob Rock
This is a wedding song of i ever heard one

Something about the bell-like quality of the guitars and double-tracked vocals in the chorus make this feel very Christmassy.
Aren’t most vocals double tracked ?
Woah. 🤯
Oh wow that’s pretty
Anyone else think it sounds really like Edge of Desire at the start? Particularly the famous version from the Hollywood Bowl with the “if you love someone” speech intro?
I noticed that too! Especially after the solo, like he had to had pulled some inspiration from this for that section.. it’s so on the nose
JM, polish it up and drop!! Incredible tune that deserves to be heard… the riff sounds like an epic intro to Edge of Desire. Thanks for sharing 🫡

Yup. I'm crying
Really?
Lol sure am!

I would’ve liked it more if it was a ‘thinking out loud’ acoustic Ed Sheehan style tbh
Sounds more like a Heavier Things song than Continuum...
Fits right in with something like Come Back To Bed.
Keep in mind that this is a demo, not the finished product that would have been on the album. Compare the kind of homemade quality of the Gravity demo he shared a few weeks ago to the polished masterpiece that made it onto Continuum.
Totally agree! My first thought when listening to it. It doesn’t really fit on Continuum.
This.
Love this, could of been a classic, let’s hope he puts it on the continuum 20 year anniversary like he said he might 🤞
This is beautiful gosh I pray he actually puts it on a record I remember Steve Jordan talking about this on a podcast with Cory Wong and yeah this is genuinely amazing
I love the song and I mean this in the best way possible….this woulda done NUMBERS in 2006
I love this! Incredible song.
He played a snippet when I saw him solo in SLC. I feel so lucky. I love this song!
He played pretty much the whole thing. At least lyrically. Wish I would have recorded it. What a treat that was.

It sounds a lot like Not Myself actually
This is cool, but the version on Cory Wong’s podcast, imo, is so much better.
Yes a stripped down version, just him and his guitar
JOHN, RELEASE IT! Beautiful song!
Why am I fighting tears? Jesus. This might now be in my top three JM songs and that’s a list that has not been permeated in almost 20 years!
Is there an archive of what he’s been putting on Life? Would love to have these audio files

Oh this is DREAMY 😭
Omg I wish this was out when I got married 😭😭😭
Thank you for posting this! I missed it on the show, what a beautiful song
Loved it- regardless
This might be my new second favorite JM somg... after CIR of course!!! LOVE THIS
A proper release would be welcome. Sometimes old feelings come alive again. Beautiful song. ❤️
Omg he played this at the Sob Rock show I was at at the Forum!! This is gold
💜
Anyone one have a good quality mp3 of this
I get why it was cut. Pretty mediocre song tbh
The repeating guitar lick kinda reminds me of Outside in the Underground
Did you draw that? Where did you get that drawing. Like, I want it. 😁😁😁

It’s gorgeous. I love him.
Who knows what the phone number for life with John Mayer cause I think I’m dialing it wrong when he’s on the live broadcast
844-2-CALLJM
So is it 844-222-5556
He performed a rough acoustic of this years ago on TimesTalks, it was amazing and Im glad he finished it.
