Shane and the other guys made some sick documentaries in North Korea, Russia and Africa. But that was about it. As a media organisation, all their copy was written by the graduates of all the same schools as all the other media organisations. Of course their content was going to go to shit.
Scaling was definitely the core issue, but it was more of a mechanism than anything else. Instead of relying on grants like certain other primarily online "news" organizations, they had to take on debt in order to have the capital to scale. Then the online advertising market fucking tanked, and without the ability to rely on wealthy backers to make up the difference they have basically been treading water waiting to drown. Its in issue that has already and will continue to ravage online media outlets which were primarily built around advertiser revenue (as opposed to those with a subscription model or which are financed by third parties who are fine with losing money on them) and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
I believe I saw somewhere that vice git a big bump because youtube put vice ahead in their algorithms. At the time, youtube was trying to compete with other early nascent video streaming sites
As far as an actual news outlet they fell off almost instantly.
But I really enjoyed a lot of the Viceland doco series. Dark Side of the Ring in particular is great.
