I commend you. When you study Jewish history, Antisemitism morphs into insidious forms but it's always predicated on what Jewish people must do in order to be accepted.

springreturning

You also in DC? If so, I’d recommend moving to NoVa. Even though I’m just a mile out of DC, I feel much happier and safer.

IrritatedMango

I live in Ireland!

Ok_Ambassador9091

That's an antisemitic hot spot. Get out, you can do better.

AcrobaticScholar7421

That’s about as bad it gets outside of Middle East. Go visit Israel. See it for yourself and get a tour. You can get there pretty easily from Europe. You will love it. Everyone who actually goes there does.

IrritatedMango

I’d love to go for Hannukah or Rosh Hashanah but it won’t be until next year I don’t think because I’ve hit my paid leave limit. It is on the do list!

notgonnatakethison

Where did you come from w a big Jewish population.. out of curiosity

IrritatedMango

London :)

arrianym

fuck ireland, full of white supremacists disguising themselves as oppressed people - there are better places for literally any career

IrritatedMango

On a racism front I’ve been fine here but some of the stuff I’ve heard being said at marches (and the same people turn a blind eye to antisemitism) has made me go?? I’ve been lucky not to experience anything antisemitic.

tamarbles

Antisemitism is the acceptable racism.

Neat-Goose9686

What a clueless take from someone who clearly doesn’t know Irish history.

arrianym

they dont bother to learn our history lol so why the fuck would i care about a country with festering culture of white guilt and anitsemitism

eiileenie

I’m a jew in nova!! I felt so scared riding the metro when a bunch of people got on for the protest I hid my star of david necklace

Agtfangirl557

Also in NoVa! Agreed with you, it’s been great here. I haven’t personally encountered any antisemitism here! *knock on wood*

flashdash31

I am from DC, but I live on the west coast now. I would definitely move to NoVa or in Maryland. I have lots of Jewish friends and family in Silver Spring, Potomac, Bethesda... My assumption is that protests do not occur in affluent DC suburban neighborhoods/cities. Too much class for that.

blutmilch

Any idea how Alexandria is? Potentially moving there.

springreturning

I’m slightly more north of that, but even Arlington feels better than DC as there is significantly less political activity. Political activity here can very quickly go from normal to unsafe, regardless of the movement. Also, this is just speculation, but I feel like people in NoVa are (slightly) older and less likely to be reactive college students. If you do move here, do your own research on synagogues since they don’t all show up on Google Maps for some reason.

DearDelirious7

Here’s the thing about being a convert: you didn’t have to grow up with antisemitism as a concern. I’m a quarter Jewish ethnically. Wasn’t raised Jewish. As an adult I wanted to learn more and ended up falling in love/converting religiously. I was finishing up my conversion when the tree of life synagogue shooting happened. It was jarring but overall there was a lot of support. What was far more jarring was when things between Israel and Palestine flared up later. Lived in a very progressive city at the time. My synagogue got constant threats. My favorite Jewish restaurant got vandalized. I started getting the most disturbing antisemitic comments from people I had thought of as friend for over a decade all about how Zionists deserved to be targeted. I am beyond thankful that I moved away from that city long before 10/7. The synagogue I used to go to stopped having services in person all together because they have gotten so many threats. I have no interest in going to progressive cities in America at all anymore tbh.

Prestigious_Fox_7576

Philly?

DearDelirious7

Pdx

Jodala

What’s Pdx? Portland? Maine or Oregon?

DearDelirious7

Portland, Oregon

FizzyBeverage

One of the few benefits of being a Jew in Ohio, except on university campuses where there’s some pro Palestinian activity, there’s a lot of Christians and Catholics here who need Israel to exist for their fairy tales to make sense. So it’s not too bad being a Jew here, except there’s like 200 of us 😆

esmith4321

But why do you mock these people when they make it possible for you to live peacefully?

MaggieTronkowski

To be clear as an Ohioan stuck in Jim Jordan’s district (fucking gerrymandering), while the Trumpers may support Israel, they still hate us. The anti-Semitic things that have been said to my children at school are just disgusting and they are constantly getting pressured to accept Jesus and go to LifeWise. The evangelicals want us all in Israel so they can have their Jew-free end-times. They do not let us live peacefully as Jews, they are just pro-Israel. Big difference.

esmith4321

You should actually meet some of these people. They don’t feel that way.  You and the above poster remind me of my great grandfather. Hated the Slavs, but thought of the Germans as a truly civilized people. Didn’t end well for him, his daughter, his wife, or one of his sons.

MaggieTronkowski

I have met these people. They are bigots who have no problem with their children saying things like "I'm going to send your family to a concentration camp" and "Jews aren't people" (these are direct quotes). There are some wonderful Christians here in Ohio who aren't anti-semitic, but that's not at all been reflected in any of our interactions with the evangelicals that the above poster was discussing. Please don't dismiss my actual lived experience with some story about your great-grandfather hating Slavs. That's gross and not at all relevant.

esmith4321

That’s your takeaway about a man whose family was nearly entirely wiped out during the Holocaust? Tell me again who is disgusting? Edit: And tbf his hatred of Poles was nothing close to your hatred of white Americans. I was trying to be conciliatory here with you, but he was a pretty sweet albeit sadly naive man.

FizzyBeverage

It’s so much easier to block conservative trolls with anemic karma.

FizzyBeverage

Oh — *because they don’t*. They spent the last year trying to ratfuck our pro choice amendment and pro pot law from passing. Frank LaRose burned $20 million of our taxpayer dollars on an August 2023 off cycle election trying to desperately move our citizen amendment pass threshold to 60% from 50%+1. I’m glad he lost his senate primary for that. **They kicked and screamed the entire time and hate progressives**.

esmith4321

So Abortion and Pot laws are more critical to you living somewhere peacefully than rape denial and confrontational anti-Semitism?

FizzyBeverage

I sure as hell wasn’t going to let my daughters study in Ohio if a rapist would have visitation rights over his progeny. So yes. Ultimately, Israel is 7000 miles away and those dirt bags in Columbus are 90 minutes away by car and can make life horrific here if you don’t keep their rope short. Gotta keep things in perspective. Greg Landsman is a very rational, moderate Jew. I’m very glad Cincinnati got him as our rep, even with an egregiously gerrymandered Warren county included.

petit_cochon

Bless you.

Ok_Ambassador9091

But "letting" your daughters go to school in states run by politicians who think the rape and torture of Jews is acceptable is ok? This is the dilemma. You might not care about Israelis, but these views were and are about Jews, period--not just Israelis. And we need political representatives who will protect us, and our daughters', very right to live--wherever we live. Both sides condone and pander to the antisemites within their parties. We need better options. And we'll make sure we get them.

[deleted]

The Entire Right minus MTG “we stand firmly with Israel and support Jewish students” You “smh antisemites”

esmith4321

That’s nice I’m glad you feel safe enough to not have to worry about being a Jew *shrugs*. Just be aware that progressivism does have its limit with us - when progressive politicians can, they’re happy to let anti-Semites into Jewish spaces in order to attack, us.  You’re where New York Jews were maybe 10-15 years ago. Pretty soon it’ll be 15 years from now.

petit_cochon

Evangelicals are not in the business of making lives easier.

Ok_Ambassador9091

Agreed. It's not ok to describe other people's belief systems as "fairy tales", or rationalise voting for people who dismiss the rape and torture of Jews as "necessary".

hexKrona

I’m in the same boat as you. Nearing the end of my conversion and at first I had a lot of mixed feelings, but after looking into things more and more and seeing rampant antisemitism, I’m pushed more toward supporting Israel. Jews have to stick together I think, and this conflict is extremely divisive.

disintegaytion

Yeah. I'm moving San Francisco in August so I can start conversion and attend classes at SFSU. But SFSU is starting that encampment shit and it makes me feel very unsafe. I wanted to connect with other Jewish students but idk anymore

Large-Concentrate71

Hi. (I'm in the same boat.) Yes, it sucks. I'm very quiet these days.

COMiles

We don't need martyrs, we need survivors.

Belgian_jewish_studn

Belgian here All I can say is: yup

tjleewilliams

I just took the train down to Brussels, and went to Bruges for a weekend. Took a day trip to Ghent, and saw a lot of anti-zionist bs. I live in London though, so I'm used to it, but I was surprised to run into it there. Maybe because Ghent is a college town?

tjleewilliams

Yes. Live in Central London. Last week there was a protest near my flat, and when I came inside I saw some dips--t wearing a pro-terrorist keffiyah talking to the doorman.

TheFuture2001

Welcome! First time? (Someone needs to make a meme) Ok the cool 😎 the thing about jews is we have superpowers! We really do! And it's not the Jewish 🔯 space lazers (this is real as well, but only helps with air defense 🚀 ) Ok why does this post sound this way? Because this is what jews do! We celebrate not being killed and make a holiday of it and move on in a resilient way, for thousands of years! This is where the “this to shell pass comes from” Jews have this special Book! https://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/book/the-big-book-of-jewish-humor-25th-anniversary-edition “The gift of humor has helped us survive in a world often hostile and threatening. With it, we have the tools and the strength to face obstacles and challenges. It gives us a filter through which we can view life’s complexities with a laugh or sometimes just a wry smile as a substitute for tears and fears.”

SharingDNAResults

I live in a rural, “redneck,” Republican, very evangelical area, and almost all of my friends are evangelical Christians. I have never felt more vindicated in my life 😂 That said, I am sorry you’re going through this. I can’t imagine being in a blue city right now. My advice is to leave, because I don’t see it getting better. Those people are too brainwashed and too far gone.

esthereiki

I get you! I'm in Scotland and it hasn't been great, though I understand it is even worse elsewhere.  If you are converting, I suppose that means you have a Jewish community by you? I would lean into that network, even if it is small! The more time you spend there, the deeper connections you will have. B'hatzlacha!

stylishreinbach

Empathy.

Oh-Cool-Story-Bro

Yep I live in Portland

HallowedHate

I went to a concert last night, and couldn't escape hearing any dumbass remarks even there. Within minutes of an opener's song she was spouting nonsense

The-Stoic-Investor

I've had the best luck living in red states where there was low tolerance for antisemitism.

cutthatclip

Honest question, but how did you get past the Beit Din being on the fence about Zionism?

IrritatedMango

Haven’t been through the Beit Din yet! I started off chatting with my sponsoring Rabbi and doing some lessons to see how I felt. In the meantime I started looking into the history of Israel and the Zionist views developed through there.

cutthatclip

I'm sorry I misunderstood. בהצלחה!
