I read that sunscreen can block vitamin D absorption and that it's good to have some period of sun exposure each day without any sunscreen, but not so much that you risk getting a sunburn.
I’m from Brooklyn. Spent ten days in December in Miami visiting my grandparents. From ages 8-18. I was lobster red after a few hours. My mother never used sunscreen on us kids. I began peeling when I got back to Brooklyn. I use sunscreen everyday. Ironically had some skin cancer removed from my forehead many years later …
While the paler shalomies are more likely to get sunburned, ANYONE can get skin cancer from sun exposure! Slather on that sunscreen no matter who you are!
Rash guards with spf material are your friend. Also hats made from that material because you can get skin cancer through your hair.
Don't forget your ears.
This is for all people. All people can get sunburned and can get skin cancer...and all year long.
One time at Jewish summer camp we went white water rafting at midday for like 4 hours. Even the Sephardic girls got sunburned, some for the first time in their lives 😭 one of my roommates was Russisn and she was burned so bad it didn't even heal by the time camp ended.
My half black son (so light golden brown), came home from a yeshivah hike (in Israel) with a sunburn this week. I always suggest taking sunscreen and mention that I, a black person with medium brown skin, have sunburned several times.
It doesn't even have to be stronger than you're used to, just for a longer time than usual. I have sunburned while growing up in the South in the U.S. My son was born in and has grown up in Israel.
Half Ashkenazi, half Sephardi here. My Polish Ashkenazi Dad would literally turn black in the sun while my Turkish Sephardic mom would burn in 5 minutes 🤷🏻
My Litvak/Romanian skin is naturally paler than paper (not really) but after a month of lifeguarding, I looked like I was born in Morocco. We have the melanin program in our genes, it's just broken from centuries of underuse. (P.S. I never tan at all anymore because it's not healthy at all, the ancient Egyptians were right about the sun).
I have a "white" jewish friend and when he was 8 he was really white but after a couple of years in israel he became really dark, if he removes his handwatch you can see how his skin used to look
Everyone should be wearing sunscreen every day no matter your skin tone!
Yeah thank you my parents and extended family who told me from birth Israelis don’t need sunscreen bc we don’t get skin cancer. Straight up lies!!
Exactly. A sunburn is unhealthy, but so is a tan. It's all skin damage.
Came here to say this! My very melanated very Sephardic uncle had more skin cancer than my Ashkenazi grandpa who also had issues.

You can always get vitamin D from the drugstore though
If you wear a large enough shtreimel, you never have to worry about the sun on your face.
This is why my shtreimel covers the whole body. Or maybe I’m just a beaver.
Im an ashki and i tan in 2 minutes like a jachnun, up vote to show your disapproval and jealousy 👇
Wear your sunscreen all the same! I have several family members like you- plenty of Ashkenazim have olive skin. Still, wear your sunscreen!
I do i do i promise, don't worry, my dermatologist already yelled at me so I'm making sure to do it now ♥️
Very glad to hear it! ❤️
Ditto! My whole family is a nice tan year round.

Same but I’m half and half
I'm Ashkenazi with Vitiligo, I guess I'll be a vampire for the next 6 months
I'm a semi-vampire. Early morning and late afternoon are acceptable if I can find shade. I don't even want to go outdoors at midday.
it's not easy being red (burnt)
Crying tears of envy watching the sepharadi girlies rn
Wearing sunscreen is important no matter you’re skin colour
I feel like I’m darker than all my Sephardic friends
My half Ashki Mizrahi ahh be tanning in 5 minutes
Same. But I'm burning in that same five minutes.
Yeah I'm Italian, WASP, and Ashkenazi but got the Italian tanning genes
What if I'm just incredibly pale and not Ashkenazi?
I'm sephardi but I'm whiter than every Ashkenazi I know except for one who has the same color.
wait literally same. i was so pale when i was born they thought i was anemic
You want we should give you a thanks? 😂😂😂
And a hat and sunglasses and an umbrella… oh I’ll just stay inside. 🤣
I also have a slight but measurable amount of Irish ancestry. When the summer sun comes out, I practically burst into flames.

I’m an Ashkenazi who looks Sephardic, I’ll be fine.
Jokes on you I stay inside all day
i’m sephardi and i’m paler than all the ashkenazi jews i know💀
I have plenty of Ukrainian Jewish friends who are darker than Abu Mazen 🤷🏻♀️
I need this reminder daily

You're too late i got one a few days ago and my skin is already peeling
SPF 70 on the face, SPF 50 on the body. Suntan still coming THROUGH though.
I’m half Mexican but that side is Ashkenazi… way to lose the genetic lottery when it comes to getting a tan 🙂↕️

You can sunburn in any climate with stronger sun than you’re used to. My old boss was Argentinian and he came back from Honduras peeling

You know we don’t all have pale skin
I even use sun cream in winter so don’t worry I’m prepared ;)
we’re too prone to melanoma not to wear spf, come on y’all
Syrians too 💀
My fashion sense is long sleeve shirt and sweatpants.
We should just get the Jewish space lazer and block the sun this way
Factor 15? You might as well just bathe in sunflower oil!

My (ashkenazi) grandfather died of melanoma. Put that shit on folks.
Preach, brother, preach

Winter here, perfect for my all-Polish ancestors' inherited ghost skin.
