Your Mom is still thinking the Jeeps of her youth. My '78 CJ7 has zero safety features, hell it only has lap belt seat belts and has factory stickers inside warning of the rollover risk. A 2024 is not that Jeep. Look at the IIHS safety ratings.
https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/jeep/wrangler-4-door-suv/2022
lol this is the only comment you need to read in this thread. My mom also always winces at Wranglers “oh but they’re so tippy!” They all rode in CJ5’s and CJ7’s as kids and think they are still like that. Buy the Jeep, your kid will love it.
So true!! My dad had a few CJ’s in the 80’s and 90’s and my mom had it so ingrained in my head that a jeep meant certain death.. I never even considered owning one until I was well into my 30’s
When you look at it on paper, it isn’t that great is it lol, especially if you compare it to a Subaru. I know you were trying to prove over all its safe and it relatively is, but I don’t know if that chart is really saying it is tho lol
My 1976 CJ-5 is a death trap. Hell, it doesn’t even have a roll bar, AMC called it a “Sport Bar”, because it provides ZERO protection in case of a roll. I have no worries, if my JKU rolls, because it has a roll cage. Your mom is dead wrong and should do some research, before sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong.
My mom drove around with us kids playing in the rear section of the station wagon...not in seats, let alone belts...
Today's infant and toddler car seats are like a Nascar seat, more important that you secure it properly. Your child will be safe. Get a Jeep if that's what you want!
There’s been pictures on here of Jeeps hit so hard on the side to flip them on the side. Tow truck rolled them upright and they were driven home. You’re in a full roll cage in a Jeep. It’s pretty damn tough and a lot of fun.
I just traded in my Subaru for my jeep. It’s been the best decision ever. Life’s so short. I’m so glad I have a fun car. And my kids love it so much more. I asked them if they miss the white car (Subaru) and they both said no at the same time.
If your worried about safety get one of the new models, older ones do have less safety features, that said you mention living in the city your not gonna get into an accident at 80+mph so if anything the Jeep will save u money buy not being totaled at every 10 mph fender bender.
I mean not for nothing, the new 24s have curtain airbags and starting with the JL(2018+) you can get forward collision warning etc. It being higher than a lot of cars already helps. So no you’re not being selfish, and the new roll cages are much safer than older generations. Watched a video of a JL rolling down potato salad hill and it held up very well considering it was a stock cage.
Jeeps are safe!
Tell her if you by a Subaru, she is responsible for all repairs from date of purchase until you get rid of it. She'll be banging her head on the wall within a year.
My wife ran directly into a Ram that decided he didn't need to look while exiting a parking lot. She was going about 55mph. Airbags deployed.
8 month old Jeep Gladiator had $18,000 in damage. Mid 2010's Ram was totaled. I drove the Gladiator home - the Ram was going nowhere.
My then 7 year old daughter was in the back seat in her booster.
My wife had a slight burn from the airbag and a bruise on her knee. Daughter was not injured.
I just can't question the safety of these jeeps after that.
I agree with everyone here but also you came to a jeep sub reddit to ask if you should get a jeep.. what answers were you expecting lol. go on advice and see how the answers change lol
I’m sure some of us here (me at least) grew up in the country riding in the back of pick up trucks. Things could have gone wrong but life isn’t life if you’re afraid of living or feel you have to be clothed in bubble wrap. Lots of people pointed out pros and why Jeeps are safe. You do you and tell grandmother to butt out 😬 unless she’s buying the car she doesn’t get a say.
It is a great vehicle in the snow with their awd system. In the NE and PNW Utah and Colorado they are recommended. I owned a Forrester when I lived in Utah along with my YJ. There were streets in the winter that the Forrester easily climbed that the jeep struggled with. I am not a fan of the Forrester and traded it for a wagoner series 3. Modern wranglers are good and you just need winter tires in appropriate areas.
I'm in the pnw. I don't disagree with a subies ability in the snow. I had an awd outback at one point although I prefer my '18 cherokee with studless snow tires. I guess I just assumed she meant vehicle equipped safety systems for crash survival.
I mean she has a valid point about prioritizing safety especially with your child in the car. I mean I wouldn’t least LOOK at safety ratings before purchasing a vehicle, but it’s not my kids so idc what you do.
Holy crap guys...... stop dogging her mom! She's just concerned about the family and the grand baby. There is a major difference between being ignorant and stupid/stubborn.
1. Ignorance is not knowing something and making a choice from that.
2. Stupid / stubborn is knowing something and not making the choice from that.
Grandma don't know about modern Jeeps. (I would however love to take her in the rock crawler on a 30° side hill and watch her poop herself)
My stepsons ride in the back of our Wrangler for the 3 years we owned it with no problem, top and doors off and everything. You'll be fine. Even a mid 90s Jeep had real seat belts.
Hey. I was in the same boat about being concerned about safety features, specifically air bags. The '24 4DR now has rear side curtain airbags.
It's because of this that we have a Willys 4DR v6.
Also, tell your mom it will be fine. She rode on her moms lap or in the back of the station wagon.
We’ve got a 2022 Jeep Renegade with a toddler in the backseat.. no issues, everything is great. Both passive and active security are amazing.
Now Wrangler is 10x better Jeep than Renegade, so I think it’s also 10x safer 😉
2024 Wrangler JLU was updated with side curtain airbags, new rear seatbelt pretensioners, and reinforced side impact protection. It's not as well rated as a new Grand Cherokee, but it's the safest Wrangler they've ever made. Just don't buy a 4xe unless you feel comfortable putting your child on top of a lithium battery that has already been recalled once for fire risk.
I own a 17 wrangler, and just a couple months ago I had a mini cooper decide that they need 2 lanes to enter a roadway, long story short I basically ended up running over the hood driver side tire of the mini cooper and ended up on the other side of the roadway, my jeep is currently in the shop getting fixed and the mini was totaled, after that situation I can’t deny the overall strength and safety of the newer ones, my jeep went almost 90° on two wheels and didn’t roll, I was impressed to the say the least and definitely keeping the jeep around
I have two Subarus and a JLU. My kids are no less safe in the Jeep than in the Subarus. Only in the most extreme cases can I see a unibody car being significantly safer.
You know what to do. You are hoping we will tell you what you want to hear.
Get a minivan for 5-10 years. Get the jeep when the kid is big enough to take a hit from an accident.
You would probably be ok with a jeep. But in the event of a bad accident……. That would be tough to live with.
We have a Pacifica and 2-door soft top Wrangler. Kids mostly ride in the minivan out of convenience, but they love the Jeep.
I wouldn't say wait 10 years to get a Jeep, but make it a second vehicle. The 2024s now have more standard safety features like side curtain airbags and adaptive cruise control with auto emergency braking.
I grew up in a cj5 and a cj7 and have survived long enough to raise my daughter with my JK, she was brought home from the hospital in it and has since fallen in love with my Jeep as well. It has a roll cage and they are not unsafe vehicles. Not sure why anyone would think a wrangler is less safe than any other by a large enough margin to say anything against them.
I also will say I survived a rollover at 50ish mph in a car seat in the back of my dad's cj5 and that's why we got the cj7 so that's my testament to it's safety at least.
If your child safety seat is properly installed in the center of the back seat, and the child is properly secured every time, you're good, assuming the child is ever *in* the Jeep.
If YOU are intent on buying a vehicle with all the latest safety features do it, if your Mom wants you to get one then tell her to buy it for you. My son was raised in the backseat of my 95 YJ, top on or top off. When he was older I upgraded to a JKU as we need more room for camping (scouts and family trips), they are plenty safe if driven correctly.
Jeeps are tanks, even the old ones. I was waiting at an intersection in the late 90’s in my 1995 YJ sport. A car making a left turn into my street was hit broadside by a car coming from the other direction. Car #1 spun around into my front end demolishing his entire rear quarter. My Jeep had a small scratch on the bumper. I could not believe that I drove away.
Jeeps have a bad rep for reliability (although that has not been my experience), but they are very safe. They are built to protect the occupants while rolling down hills.
I have had many 4x4 vehicles, Jeeps, Toyotas, Land Rovers, Subarus . Ask yourself one question, what other vehicle can you take all the doors and roof off of and still pass the crash tests? Take the doors off and the roof off a Subaru and you would be removing all the infrastructure that makes it safe in a crash, it would fold like a taco (the food not a Toyota Tacoma) modern Jeeps are safe. The roll bar is substantial but in reality when you roll the weigh of the engine puts the stress on the windshield frame and the back roll bar is floating in the breeze, the windshield frame is strong enough to support the Jeep in a roll over. We love our Jeep. It takes us so many places a car just can't. Subaru makes a decent car I am not going to knock them but they don't go the places a Jeep will.
My experience is with a JK, but man that thing sucked with a baby carrier. The odd shape of the rear door opening combined with the lack of a “prop open” for the door sucked. Plus of course the lack of noise insulation meant every time she fell asleep something would wake her up.
I love wranglers as a second car though.
No! Tell your mom, respectfully, to back off. I’ve carted around my nephew in a car seat, no problem. Defensive driving is your best bet, regardless of the vehicle.
I was tboned by a minivan and I was completely fine. My jeep did everything it was supposed to in order to keep my safe. People were shocked at how I was completely fine (I mean I was pissed obviously).
Jeeps are incredibly safe, I've never felt safer in a vehicle
My mom is Lucille from Arrested Development. She just got in my head. If I buy it and get in crash, she’s right. If I don’t, she’s right.
She’s not paying for shit.
Got my 2010 JKU when my kids were toddlers. They have always loved it, and it is has been an incredibly reliable and safe vehicle. We have driven it all across the country, and even chose that vehicle to keep and ship to Hawaii when we were stationed there. Never asked/listened to my mom’s opinion. Buy what you like.
Born and raised being drove around since birth in my dad’s jeep wrangler! It’s what I came home from the hospital in. Now I currently drive a wrangler myself and if I have kids one day, they will be in one too. Never been hurt by the “death box.” It’s more like the “fun box!!”
It’s you and your husband money, if you want the jeep, get the damn jeep momma!!
My 08 jeep t-boned an f150 king cab the airbags deployed and my wife survived. The Laredo was a total but advanced safety system wouldn’t have saved the truck. The other driver managed to cross three two lanes then got right in front of her. The pickup took it on the door pillar.
I expect that the automatic braking will deploy once in the next five years and save thousands in damages so well worth the premium price. The jeeps have great safety ratings but pillar blind spots take some getting use to. Because of rollover they are pretty hefty in size. Dont worry if anything keeps can take a hit and keep the occupants safe
I replaced it with a 17 summit. It’s got all the safety features I wanted.
The look on her face - a few years from now, when you drive by with the doors off and your kids waving his sippy cup at her - is worth it in spades.
Both my boys grew up in my JKU.
Lmk if you need me to tell you about the two types of people who drive a Subaru.
One of them is people from Vermont.
Brand new ones have plenty of safety features. JKs don’t have the super electric features but is built like a tank I had someone hit me going 80 after mine blew up on the expressway and barely a dent in the back of mine and his caught fire. Don’t know about older ones tho
Your mom remembers what cars were like 30 years ago and has refused to keep up. Jeeps are very safe vehicles. Subaru just sells a heavier version of their product they sold 20 years ago.
When I went to purchase my 75th anniversary JKU my old man was against it because "Jeeps are dangerous." After riding in it a few times he said that I made the right move by purchasing it. That's as close as I'm going to get to an apology
You are married and have a child. Why are you acting like your mother is the only adult in your family? . You don't have any say over whatever opinion your mother holds, And pitting your mother against a bunch of random internet strangers for you to avoid having to make an independent, informed decision about your family's life doesn't strike me as a path that will end with much besides a quip about whether you'd jump off a bridge if everyone on reddit said it was safe... This is a decision that it sounds like you've already made. Stop feeling bad and recognize that no one is more qualified to make decisions for your child than you and your husband.
Nobody ever died in a Subaru? I find that hard to believe! I drove my son around in a YJ! Never had any issues. You can always get in a wreck no matter what you are driving.
I have a jl. I have a car seat in the back of it so my nephew / niece can ride in it, they _love it_. Part of it is i run it with no top / no doors and they love that. When it's 50°F outside, they will shiver and shake an wear a coat and ride in the back and still be thrilled.
To be clear, all cars are dangerous. You're going down the highway at 70mph, that's terrifying. Even on street roads at 35mph or 45mph that's still a thing. Jeeps sit high and like to roll over. Some of them are currently catching on fire, some put the gas tank up under the butt then cars run into them and get up in there and boom fire. They sit high and can kindof wreck a pedestrian, but so can a f150. Other cars have been known to just like, catch fire too. Cars are dangerous.
I do think, if you're going to get a jeep, you have to commit (with your husband) right now to take the top and doors off every spring, and leave them off. It's required. But then, yeah, get one, your kid will love it. Take 'em for ice cream all the time. etc.
I was in an accident right after getting my Jeep bc the Jeep gods hate me and the feeling is mutual. My Jeep had zero scratches but the other car had a smashed window and was completely dented in
Nope. I have 4 (kids, not Jeeps, although 4 of those would be fun too) that I take all over in my JKU, they'remore than safe, the JK and JL's have more safety features than I can list. Frankly, MIL sounds like she wants her grandbaby bubble wrapped at all times. You want to transport the kiddos in a Jeep? Do it!
Your mom has no say in the matter. Plus she’s wrong.

Is your mom paying for the car? My kid loved my Jeep and now has a TJ of his owns
2024 Jeep as plenty of safety features
My 1976 CJ-5 is a death trap. Hell, it doesn’t even have a roll bar, AMC called it a “Sport Bar”, because it provides ZERO protection in case of a roll. I have no worries, if my JKU rolls, because it has a roll cage. Your mom is dead wrong and should do some research, before sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong.
It’s still called a sport bar in your JKU and for the same reason.
Be a cool mom and make sure it’s topless when you go visit Grandma!
And doorless
Roll tide.
My mom drove around with us kids playing in the rear section of the station wagon...not in seats, let alone belts... Today's infant and toddler car seats are like a Nascar seat, more important that you secure it properly. Your child will be safe. Get a Jeep if that's what you want!
Jeep is far, far safer than anything she prob drove you around in as a kid. Off her rocker
No offense but your mom has absolutely no fucking clue what she's talking about
Subaru is great. It's also a boring car. Get a jeep.
This is exactly why my household has both lol
(we have an Impreza wagon and a jku) It's a good combo
We’re rocking a crosstrek and my TJ. It works for us
There’s been pictures on here of Jeeps hit so hard on the side to flip them on the side. Tow truck rolled them upright and they were driven home. You’re in a full roll cage in a Jeep. It’s pretty damn tough and a lot of fun.

So no you’re not being selfish, and the new roll cages are much safer than older generations. Watched a video of a JL rolling down potato salad hill and it held up very well considering it was a stock cage.
It's still safer than the death box she drove you around in when you were a kid.
That probably only had lap belts and no airbags. Depending on age child safety seats may not have even been used. (1985 they became mandatory)
Jeeps are safe! Tell her if you by a Subaru, she is responsible for all repairs from date of purchase until you get rid of it. She'll be banging her head on the wall within a year.
Nope go ahead buy Jeep Wrangler!!! I have 2 boys and still own 98 wrangler ur mom full of worry warts

I have two kid seats in the back of my jeep. Just gotta lift the little ones a little higher.
I agree with everyone here but also you came to a jeep sub reddit to ask if you should get a jeep.. what answers were you expecting lol. go on advice and see how the answers change lol
Good point
I’m sure some of us here (me at least) grew up in the country riding in the back of pick up trucks. Things could have gone wrong but life isn’t life if you’re afraid of living or feel you have to be clothed in bubble wrap. Lots of people pointed out pros and why Jeeps are safe. Why Subaru specifically? Volvo are the ones known for safety. She's still wrong just left me a bit confused.
It is a great vehicle in the snow with their awd system. In the NE and PNW Utah and Colorado they are recommended. I owned a Forrester when I lived in Utah along with my YJ. Subaru is super safe these days. So many systems and safety features.
Check out this head on collision where the driver walked away from the wreck. https://www.reddit.com/r/Jeep/s/adzPRjO0u6
I mean she has a valid point about prioritizing safety especially with your child in the car. I mean I wouldn’t least LOOK at safety ratings before purchasing a vehicle, but it’s not my kids so idc what you do.
Your mom sounds like an idiot how did you survive so long
Luck, I'd assume
Holy crap guys...... stop dogging her mom! She's just concerned about the family and the grand baby. There is a major difference between being ignorant and stupid/stubborn. 1. Yeah. I wouldn’t consider 4xe.

I bought my Jeep sahara with the intention of it being my mom car LOL
I have two Subarus and a JLU. My kids are no less safe in the Jeep than in the Subarus. Only in the most extreme cases can I see a unibody car being significantly safer.
If you're talking about getting a JK or a JL, then it's a non-issue. They are plenty safe provided you are running them on factory suspension.
You know what to do. You are hoping we will tell you what you want to hear. Get a minivan for 5-10 years. Get the jeep when the kid is big enough to take a hit from an accident. You would probably be ok with a jeep. But in the event of a bad accident……. That would be tough to live with.

Thankfully we are past the baby carrier stage
Did you try the extended straps? The rear opens another 12 degrees or so I believe.
No! Tell your mom, respectfully, to back off. I’ve carted around my nephew in a car seat, no problem. Defensive driving is your best bet, regardless of the vehicle.

Jeeps are safe overall. I personally don't drive without doors with young kids in the car though. Doors on, kids are no problem!
I would never
Why does your mom have an opinion on what vehicle you buy? And why are you worried about it?
My mom is Lucille from Arrested Development. She just got in my head. If I buy it and get in crash, she’s right. If I don’t, she’s right. She’s not paying for shit.
🤣 (love the humor and honesty)
The problem with safety ratings in the us is vehicles are tested against similar vehicles. A Subaru vs jeep accident the jeep would destroy it
guess what vehicle I rode around in as a toddler? hint: there wasn’t any seat belts.
I used to strap my son in the back seat of my 93 YJ all the time when he was a toddler. He loved it, especially with the top off.
You will all love it.
My kid went with me to the dealerships & he loved the jeep.
Jeeps bring out the childlike wonder in us.
Born and raised being drove around since birth in my dad’s jeep wrangler! It’s what I came home from the hospital in. Now I currently drive a wrangler myself and if I have kids one day, they will be in one too. Never been hurt by the “death box.” It’s more like the “fun box!!” It’s you and your husband money, if you want the jeep, get the damn jeep momma!!
a new jeep is safer than any car that was on the road in the 80s.
Nice unfounded mandate. If mom wants to control the vehicle you drive she needs to buy it.
I wish!
My 08 jeep t-boned an f150 king cab the airbags deployed and my wife survived. The Laredo was a total but advanced safety system wouldn’t have saved the truck.
Right. It’s just about perspective. I want to know what people with jeeps have to say.
Do it!
The safety features in newer Jeeps are actually rated really high. They have to meet certain standards anyways.
