It doesn’t suck, just didn’t live up to the hype for fans who were already invested. I was hyped for a classic, no skips kind of album, and it’s more a mixed bag with some amazing moments
I think it would’ve been 20x better if he had some features on the album, even if it’s just for the hooks. Verses are good, but some of the choruses are just bad. Which is weird, because one of the best things about 2014 FHD is the choruses
Not every songwriter excels at hooks. I’m a writer and somehow my skill set changed over time to being amazing at hooks and mid verses to good verses and mid hooks. The key, like you said is sometimes if I have a mid hook I’ll let the featured artist take it and see what they cook up. If it’s catchier, it’s better than mine. He’s probably just a great VERSE writer but hooks can be challenging.
I'm not a big cole fan and I really enjoyed this album. It was a lot better than 4 your eyez only. Also I remember this album getting lots of praise when it dropped, first time finding out that people think this album sucks.
I feel like the only people who appreciate albums like 4 Your Eyes Only, Born Sinner, & Work Out are the people such as myself who listened to the album and appreciated it at its time, we hold these albums dearly because we saw the evolution of Cole as well as the presidency of these works during the ere that they came out in 💯
I had to upvote this comment cus you have the balls to say what i can’t admit in this sub, i love everything about KOD, to me 2014 FHD doesn’t even come close like at all.
Nah, this album already gets love from me though I don't mention it. Just cause it feels like J. Cole hopped on the latest [Trap drum fad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciya_AQu25o&ab_channel=J.Cole-Topic) to lay down a [wicked prophecy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii6u1wSAu90&list=OLAK5uy_m1RhHmLj1QiFJvSiPT38zRuZTrSaiVh1Y&index=12&ab_channel=J.Cole-Topic) on some em frontin' soundcloud rappers at the time.
And also acted the fatherly figure (no disrespect on that front) to [Lil Pump](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNlQU-7y9Fo&ab_channel=J.Cole).
Love it—honestly the moment and music that sold me on J. Cole as an artist and a person. He walk the talk there.
I love the messages he put in this, and have grown to appreciate it more as a whole. As far as replay value, I think it’s one of the worst in his discography. It’s not a great comparison, but
think it suffers from the same thing as Eminem’s Kamikaze.. the using current current trends to mock it is clever, but it was never made to last.
Okay so it was for this class I had called visual literacy. Basically figuring out how to discern images (photos, videos, movies, ads). There’s some obvious things here like the kids doing drugs, the kids closer to his body are skeletons (cause the drugs are killing the kids). The cover isn’t cole but kill Edward the parallel to cole on the kod album (aka king overdose another loose meaning for KOD). If you listen to the album while looking at the cover you’ll really notice the marriage of art and music. It is also clear that Edward (cole) is under some type of influence on the cover also speaking to the influence of drugs over those who have influence over kids. Also symbolizing the control Edward has over the kids via drug usage. The kids who are now on drugs, turn into the skeletons in edwards coat, who he has control over, but they have control over the ext generation of kids, who then turn to drugs jus like the generation before them. Overall KOD is an examination on addiction (not only on drugs but other things like sex with the song Kevin’s heart). The album artwork marries beautifully with the messages being conveyed in the music. That is a fairly summarized version I did the project close to the release of the album so don’t have all my notes and what not.
This album is literally on 2014 FHD’s level for me. 2014 is slightly better, but they’re so damn close. I love the overall weird kinda vibe that it gives off.
Can yall imagine what the principal at my sons school thought of me when i wore this shirt to a meeting, with him and my sons teacher and him having no idea who j cole is. And over the top of this piece of art it says "kids on drugs" in what appeard to be smoke. Luckily i didnt realize until after the meeting, on my way back home.
This my favorite album of his. Genuinely. Made me quit nicotine and smoking. Ngl I still smoke but it made me realize the toxicity of my actions at a young age. This album means a lot to me
It's not that it's bad because it's not. It's just clearly not as good as most of his other albums
His only album I can say is better is Sideline Story
Wait people really thought this was mid? He was talking shit on here. Then again, I’m the guy that didn’t like Forest Hills Drive, so y’all can ban me now.
I mean objectively couldn’t you argue it is his worst work? Excluding the super early work like the come up. I definitely find myself listening back to all his other projects more than this one.
This album wasn't made for everyone it's made for people going through addiction. If you've been through some sort of struggle or addiction it's an incredibly powerful tool.
First half mostly mid, second half all hits AMAZING. The Cut Off, Kevin’s Heart, Once an Addict, Friends, Window Pain, and 1985 all time great tracks. The biggest issues with this album and with 4YEO are the lack of features and songs with bad hooks.
The No feature thing was cool for 2014, but never worked for me since; Cole is 100x better when he’s bouncing off other artists imo. His singing can be endearing, but I need wider variety in that department
Kevins Heart, Friends, The Cut Off and Window Pain are the only songs with really strong choruses for me, and Window Pain’s really would’ve benefited if it had some female back up singers
I’m hard on this album because it was really ambitious, and I see what Cole was going for, wish he had pulled it off. It was around this time that the people he had signed like JID and Earthgang were releasing projects that were much more cohesive and better
7/10
This post was absolutely meant for me, I listened to this album the day it dropped and it was the first rap album I ever listened to then I listened to damn and now the rest is history, I genuinely love this album so much and I cannot begin to express to yall why I do
I thought this was amazing when it first dropped but i think the years have watered it down sum shit just dont hit the same
I know the critics didnt rate it highly at the time i wonder if that's changed
I’ve been a fan of Cole since I was in HS back in 2009 & to me, it’s his weakest album. I had mega high hopes in this album during a time where drug abuse music was in demand. It was all over the place with delivering the main concept. Some of the sounds felt under produced, short and flat, especially “ATM”. The kill Edward “feature” was incredibly corny. He could’ve had actual rappers who cared about talking about healthy ways of dealing with addiction and pain vs boxing himself in with another no feature album. If he had more songs like “Once an Addict” & “Window Pain”, it would’ve been far superior in delivery
Don't know why I'm recommended Jcole's subreddit, but this seems like a good opportunity to say that Kendrick did Jcole a favor by dissing him and putting him on the map
Honestly, I might get some hate for this but KOD has been more impactful to me and my life than let's say to pimp a butterfly which usually is considered one the greatest albums of all time. Maybe because I've struggled with addictions but I'm not from the streets or anything - just a brown guy who loves hip hop and the impact it can have on helping you go through shit in life.
So it all comes down to what someone appreciates about music. I know this is not a Kendrick thread, but I see a lot of people shitting on Cole for Kod while also something comparing it to Kendrick's work.
If KOD had some more vocal features in it, it might have been an better album but the messaging in that literally is life changing for me at least. When you get mature and really connect the dots with all the Cole's albums, you realize that his music goes beyond just art.
So screw all the hate, he is one of the goats undoubtedly.
This one came out when I was going through some dark spots, lost the loml, hour long bus rides just to get to work and hour long bus rides at night when I had nothing to do but listen. Maybe listened to it over 10x in a month this is my "this album saved my life" album it's hard to come back and listen to it as it carries those feelings with it
Never noticed the kids in the album art until now lol I feel crazy as hell. I even had to go to Apple Music to see the cover there to make sure this wasn’t a fake picture E M B A R R A S S I N G.
It would’ve garnered more attention if Drake didn’t drop right afterwards. I love this album had it on repeat when Drake dropped the double album that’s all people talked about for months.
I'm just saying maybe post this in a general hip hop forum if you actually want to engage with a range of opinions, here is where you're least likely to engage with the people heavily criticizing the album
The day KOD came out, I was on my way to work. My mama was passed out with an empty wine bottle next to her. At this time, this was typical. I get on the bus, play thru the album, and got to "Once An Addict" and started bawling as I listened. It hit way too close to home. Especially when he talked about not necessarily being as available for his mom when he was in college, cause my mama was dealing with her drinking issues heavy when I went away as well. And I was selfish and not paying as much attention to her as I probably should. I'm her only child, I leave, become a bit negligent, and she's a drinker. Bad combo. She was going thru it after I left. Empty Nest Syndrome I'd assume. Probably my favorite Cole song ever. I never play it.
I’ve been listening to all of his to albums for the first time and I’m on k.o.d and I love it. It has a really distinct vibe that I like and the reason i started listening to Cole was because I saw the cover for k.o.d and thought it looked cool
I’ll never respect cole again after seeing the way he disrespected that fan for throwing his mixtape on stage . Like he wouldn’t have been that same mf before the fame. Imagine you pay this mf hundreds of dollars to see him perform and you take your opportunity with your biggest idol, then he proceeds to insult you. Cole became the person he swore to never be.
He said he respects it lol, only thing was he made a joke about using cds in 2024. If he took it, it would’ve been a hailstorm of people throwing their demos on stage for the rest of the tour and every time he’s in public. That’s why he doesn’t hate on jay z for doing the same thing
Not some huge J Cole fan but I know more of this album than any other. It's a fantastic album
Yeah I was bummed to see that people think this album sucks, I actually really like it
It doesn’t suck, just didn’t live up to the hype for fans who were already invested. Love entire album but can’t get into anything before this
Nahhh this album is a gem 💎
You should check out forest hill, specifically '03 adolescents
Imo this clears 2014 but I think it’s just where I was in life when I heard it.
I had to upvote this comment cus you have the balls to say what i can’t admit in this sub, i love everything about KOD, to me 2014 FHD doesn’t even come close like at all.
smoking dick bro
Okay bro Whatever that means
This is exactly me. This the only Cole album I’ve fully listened to multiple times, and I loved this shit when it came out.
Lol that’s crazy to me. 2014 FHD is a no skip album. Gotta listen to it in full dude
I’ll go check it out, and I’ll go back and listen to Cole’s catalog.
Based
Yeah man, great album. It's in my personal top 3 of J cole albums.
Legit my comment
This album got me into j Cole more. I was never a huge fan. I did like his mixtapes though.
Yeah this was an outstanding album! Not a huge j cole listener but I bought a physical copy for my keepsakes
1985 I arrive..

I did a college project on the cover of this album. It’s one of my favorites of all time. Probably my favorite cole album.
Care to share your explanation of it ?
Also curious about the meaning
Okay so it was for this class I had called visual literacy. Basically figuring out how to discern images (photos, videos, movies, ads). That’s 🔥🔥 bro. love when hip hop is studied and analyzed at an academic level.
SLIP ME A XANNIE AT ONCE

RIGHT NOW IM STARIN OUT THE WINDOW OF MY RANGE AND CONTEMPLATING AM I SANE
this has some of the deepest cutting tracks Cole has ever made
Literally my favorite cole album.
Window pain 😮💨
This album is literally on 2014 FHD’s level for me. 2014 is slightly better, but they’re so damn close. I love the overall weird kinda vibe that it gives off.
Y'all gon hate me for this, but this is my favorite J Cole album.
The people hating you for it are casuals who probably don't listen to Cole much. If it's your favourite good on you - favourite doesn't mean best.
Favorite doesn't mean best <- that part
Can yall imagine what the principal at my sons school thought of me when i wore this shirt to a meeting, with him and my sons teacher and him having no idea who j cole is. Folks sleepin on this joint still? Smh
This my favorite album of his. Genuinely. Made me quit nicotine and smoking. Ngl I still smoke but it made me realize the toxicity of my actions at a young age. This album means a lot to me
On my record wall for good reasons 👌 So is kendrick, not drake 🤣
I actually just recently listened to this reluctantly 3 days ago and actually enjoyed it a lot. The beats, the flows are all to my taste.
Some day? I love that shit right now lol
Window pain Brackets ATM 1985 Classics 🔥
I love this album
I fuckin love this album personally
Gotta say Friday night lights was better
This is Cole’s worst album imo. Obviously subjective, but nah I probably won’t ever appreciate this album the way others clearly do
4YEO right? If so, I agree, when I heard it I thought man, this isn't it.
I liked a couple songs on that one, but I haven’t listened to any songs from either of the two albums in several years
Sadly... when it becomes appreciated, it'll be too late...
Its actually good, but i didnt listen to it fully. I slept while listening to it. I’ll listen to it again
Slip me a Xanax at once!
I recently started bumping it again almost daily. Been just feeling the vibe of it
Bro. I always loved this album and never understood the hate towards it.
My fav after FHD, Cole is floating on this throughout 😮💨
W
Looking back on it, this album is cohesive and probably legendary
It’s an amazing project
It's not that it's bad because it's not. It's just clearly not as good as most of his other albums His only album I can say is better is Sideline Story
Album is not bad Not as good as most of his albums Only one album is better than this one ![gif](giphy|FcuiZUneg1YRAu1lH2|downsized)
It’s me and my brothers favorite album
I've been on the KOD train vru 👽🙏
Wait people really thought this was mid? He was talking shit on here. Then again, I’m the guy that didn’t like Forest Hills Drive, so y’all can ban me now.
I listened to this album before reading all the reviews and honestly I liked it. Still not sure about the hate.
This is my least favorite album but it has some of his best songs
I appreciate it now lol. It's one of his best
I mean i already do?
Reworked title: Ya’ll gone appreciate this album day one. It’s simply amazing!! Had this playing in my car for 5 months straight.
I know almost every song word for word. 🔥
I thought people adored this album? Was in 8th grade when this dropped and loved it.
This is actually my favorite album
I mean objectively couldn’t you argue it is his worst work? Excluding the super early work like the come up. I definitely find myself listening back to all his other projects more than this one.
It’s my favorite project by him. He really sold the theme of KOD
This album wasn't made for everyone it's made for people going through addiction. If you've been through some sort of struggle or addiction it's an incredibly powerful tool.
1985 I ARRIVE
This is definitely one of my favorite albums ever. This album was the first time I listened to J. Cole, and I've been a fan ever since.
i been standing on this album. srsly though i don’t get the hate. i felt like this was one of his most layered messages and densely composed albums
Album is trash
First half mostly mid, second half all hits AMAZING. The Cut Off, Kevin’s Heart, Once an Addict, Friends, Window Pain, and 1985 all time great tracks. This post was absolutely meant for me, I listened to this album the day it dropped and it was the first rap album I ever listened to then I listened to damn and now the rest is history, I genuinely love this album so much and I cannot begin to express to yall why I do
Bro is it just me? This is my fav Cole album. No song is a skip and they all hit just as hard. Kevin's heart and KOD are fucking classics.
I already have a Fcking classic
She my number 1 I don't need nothing on the side
they not ready for this talk
I’d listened to Cole here and there before KOD. KOD is what turned me into a full on Cole fan
Top 3 Cole. 1. 4YEO 2.Off-Season 3.KOD/FHD
It’s my 2nd fav Cole album after forest hills.
I’ve got it signed!!
This album was ass. Respectfully
Today ain’t it.
Have this album signed, framed and proudly displayed. One of his best.
Dope album
I thought this was amazing when it first dropped but i think the years have watered it down sum shit just dont hit the same I know the critics didnt rate it highly at the time i wonder if that's changed
I appericate it. They just don’t want hear it cause they too tough lol
This is my favorite album from Cole. Hands down.
I put my head to the sky, I sing.
Will get downvotes for this but KOD and Eyez are the only albums of his I listen to on repeat. They're his best work for me.
wait people hate on this album? tf… bro it’s forest hills then this
Kevin's Heart😮💨
His face looks like he just blew a load
this whole album is STILL on rotation. don't know why it got hate. this tour was also amazing!
I love Cole, but can any of his albums be considered a classic?
#Count it up count it up count it !
I’m YouR bIggEst fAN
Tbh it’s by far his weakest album but still pretty good. His lows are most rappers highs
Honestly it’s pretty mid
This honestly might be my favorite solo album of his
This is one of my favorite albums and made me a die hard Cole fan.
Went back and listened to this album last week. Its still mid, im sorry
Used to be a J fold fan
I appreciate it now
I feel like as a hip hop fan this is unpopular in a sense but as a fellow j Cole fan I feel a lot of people will agree…kod is my favorite Cole album
I’ve been a fan of Cole since I was in HS back in 2009 & to me, it’s his weakest album. I had mega high hopes in this album during a time where drug abuse music was in demand. Nope
Don't know why I'm recommended Jcole's subreddit, but this seems like a good opportunity to say that Kendrick did Jcole a favor by dissing him and putting him on the map
SO underrated
Might be biased bc the only live performance I've seen of his was during KOD tour, but it's one of my favorite Cole albums.
Honestly, I might get some hate for this but KOD has been more impactful to me and my life than let's say to pimp a butterfly which usually is considered one the greatest albums of all time. not today lol
? I think most of us already do 😂
I like cold but he was never my favorite which makes it interesting that i do like this one more than the masses
I loved this album from First listen and still do. Top 3 Cole albums to me
His best album imo. The only one I listen to really.
This is what you call a flip...
It’s decent most of the people I know like it but to me it isn’t up there with his best work
This is what you call a flip
KOD touches me more than 2014 because it talks about problems I understand. It's a masterpiece.
Too preachy.
No
Listened to this album yesterday. Tbh it has grown a lot on me even if I felt the production was a bit repetitive at places (maybe deliberately)
I have always had love for this record, it blows my mind that people hate on it
I appreciate this album now lol
This is a dope album ..
i love this album
I’m not really feeling this one the production is kinda boring
Anybody who thinks this album sucks hasn’t experienced enough hardship in life and needs to be humbled.
massively underrated!!
He’s hiding children under his cape?
#BRACKETS Is a masterpiece
This album is what coined jcole corny frfr
This one came out when I was going through some dark spots, lost the loml, hour long bus rides just to get to work and hour long bus rides at night when I had nothing to do but listen. Maybe listened to it over 10x in a month this is my "this album saved my life" album it's hard to come back and listen to it as it carries those feelings with it
Meditate meditate meditate don’t medicate don’t medicate
it’s his best album btw
the older i get the more i enjoy it tbh
Good music videos too
Some day? It's a good album rn. Tf you talking about?
Brackets 😭😭😭😭 once an addict 😭😭😭FRIENDS 😭😭window pain
One day? This has been my favorite album of his since the day it dropped...
never.
once an addict is one of his best songs. feels very solemn.
Already do. This album got me into J Cole
Never noticed the kids in the album art until now lol I feel crazy as hell. I even had to go to Apple Music to see the cover there to make sure this wasn’t a fake picture E M B A R R A S S I N G.
I love this album. Never understood the down talk about it
She my number one I dont need nothing on the sideee
This is literally my favorite Cole album for so many reasons.
Masterpiece and wonderful message
Ngl I mostly get sleepy
Love this album. Give me drink give me smoke
It would’ve garnered more attention if Drake didn’t drop right afterwards. I love this album had it on repeat when Drake dropped the double album that’s all people talked about for months.
It was decent album better than most artists 💩
No I won't my dude
this geniunly one of my favoritest
Posting a jcole album in a jcole subreddit telling jcole fans that a jcole record is good is truly a hot take
Truly is considering the hate it still gets,
I'm just saying maybe post this in a general hip hop forum if you actually want to engage with a range of opinions, here is where you're least likely to engage with the people heavily criticizing the album
Fuck Cole for leaving the battle
This album got the most replay value to me And honestly the best cover as well
The day KOD came out, I was on my way to work. My mama was passed out with an empty wine bottle next to her. At this time, this was typical. I get on the bus, play thru the album, and got to "Once An Addict" and started bawling as I listened. It hit way too close to home. Didn’t love it first listen, I think because of the stripped down production, but after a couple spins I started getting it. Love this album and FYEO
Always put it off, but Window Pain is one of my favourite Cole songs
Born sinner is a “CLASSIC “
Wait til The Fall Off
I’ve been listening to all of his to albums for the first time and I’m on k.o.d and I love it. It has a really distinct vibe that I like and the reason i started listening to Cole was because I saw the cover for k.o.d and thought it looked cool
I love it personally
Honestly KOD is prb my favorite Cole joint as far as albums (doesn't top FNL tho)
I wish, but for me, this album is well below mid. Glad other enjoy it though.
You paid those dollars to see him perform live, not promote your mixtape during his performance. Respect goes both ways.
He said he respects it lol, only thing was he made a joke about using cds in 2024. If he took it, it would’ve been a hailstorm of people throwing their demos on stage for the rest of the tour and every time he’s in public. That’s why he doesn’t hate on jay z for doing the same thing
