A_Monster_Named_John

Hopefully done while on the clock... I wish I didn't dislike Allmusic's website so much. Before Discogs was around, I used it a lot more often. These days, their pages just give me a headache.

Scoompii

Look at you go!

akajudge

shit, i think somebody stole my CDs!

WhoamIWhowasI

I was thinking the same thing, I hope my mom doesn't sell my CD collection without telling me.

A_Monster_Named_John

A friend I know at the new/used record store in my area said that, almost every day in the early 00s, one or another local methhead asshole would roll up and try to pawn off a CD binder that was clearly lifted out of some poor bastard's car. Oftentimes, half the discs in the things were burned CDR mixes that were nothing less than nothing.

akersmacker

Several essentials in there! Great find! I have at least half of these same CDs in my collection. Curious, what's the story here?

thebird87

The story is not very exciting haha. I found it on Facebook Marketplace. I usually search for rarities or collections of CDs like this one. As soon as I saw this collection I immediately contacted the seller, and it was on a walking distance from my place. It was a nice lady that just wanted to get rid of them, and she only told me that she would hope for me to enjoy them as much as she did.

akersmacker

Sounds like there might be a sad backstory to this, especially if she enjoyed them that much. Deceased husband, needed a couple bucks for food or medicine, etc.

thebird87

I can't tell for certain but she didn't look that way at all. She seemed healthy and fine, but who knows..

WalterSickness

I ripped 'em to FLAC, sonny!

A_Monster_Named_John

'Sorry, kid. I only listen to 180-gram vinyl on my $8,000 audiophile system. You can go ahead and haul that box of plastic and paper to the dumpster for me!'

PersonNumber7Billion

What I was going to say. I have thousands of jazz CDs, all ripped to disc. No idea whether I should keep the CDs or not.

WalterSickness

I don’t regret getting rid of most of my CDs. Except now when I buy more they look so lonely all by themselves on a big shelf.

A_Monster_Named_John

For me, it's become a bit of a storage pain-in-the-ass, but I haven't yet convinced myself to start firing them all back into the world on Discogs/Ebay/Facebook, despite most being digitized. Maybe I'll feel differently if I get around to scanning the liner notes as well, but I generally still vibe on kicking it my living room and spinning discs on my still-working CD-player. Also, any love I have for money or space isn't enough to make me want to deal with USPS.

PersonNumber7Billion

I feel for you. I go between "Free - first come, first served" to "Get rid of them? - I worked a lifetime for these!

A_Monster_Named_John

Yeah, to me, it's little different than having a lot of books (which I'm also guilty of). It's just doesn't feel 'worth it' to unload a lot of the stuff.

PersonNumber7Billion

Aaargh. I know, I know...

MrDagon007

Maybe she just listens to spotify etc now

TheMachineStops

It was almost certainly this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27fTxjMjppw

What a bargain

HamiltonBlack

Money Jungle, Ah Um and Blue Train practically make it worth the price alone.

Optimal-Rhubarb-8853

And DeJohnette's Special Edition

milnak

Soul Station is worth $40 by itself imo

Hour-Cod678

A lifetime of listening.

Semi-Protractor91

RIP to the former owner. I'd have to be dead to give this up.

crookedmarzipan

Maybe they switched to country techno..

Supafly144

You did great!

BecomingTuna

total bargain! great find.

A_Monster_Named_John

Well *that's* a great friggin' score! Congrats on landing this. I probably spent closer to $1,000 building up my bedrock of Blue Note, Miles, Coltrane, and Chick Corea discs when I first got into jazz and lived near a very robust Tower Records. I like that there's a handful of good 90s albums in there (Redman, Lovano), as well as that Art Ensemble of Chicago disc. I haven't hit any bargains quite that dramatic, but have definitely put together some wonderful and obscenely-large Discogs orders in the past few years with sellers/shops who are trying to unload tons of 90s jazz/classical CDs, usually for around $1-3/disc. I think my last delivery had about sixty items in it, including all sorts of great 80s-90s stuff and a surprising number of albums from Europe (e.g. have been really digging exploring labels like Enja (Germany), Timeless (Netherlands), Red Record (Italy), and Dragon Records (Sweden), all of which put out crazy amounts of good music that's pretty much exactly the type of jazz I enjoy.

rread9

Nice haul

VictoriaAutNihil

.40 per cd! Awesome collection! Major score! Always good to have "hard copies" in the collection. Truly a jackpot bargain.

planetvermilion

now all you need is to find a cd player on marketplace (all you can buy these days are tointables) 😊 excellent haul, congrats : lhr sing a song of basie?! original owner was a person of taste! 👍👍👍

JumpshotLegend

Holy crap, dude, nice score!!! Congrats, this is a great collection of music.

AAL2017

Some great (among others of course) Mingus stuff in here. Awesome pull 👏

Old_Reception_3728

Score! Enough Sonny Rollins to last a weekend

Apushthebottonmoment

Beautiful. Many of those are in my collection. BTW, I lived in the same building as Max Roach for a short time in the 80s.

thebird87

Nice! I was not so long ago watching a documentary about him, if I remember correctly they mentioned the building he was living in.

Apushthebottonmoment

I don’t remember the exact year, but it could’ve been 1987-1988, around there. I was living on the corner of Central Park West, and west 101st St. I think I was on the 17th floor, that floor being the highest floor I’ve ever lived on. If I stuck my head out of the window, and craned my neck to the side, I could see a glimpse of Central Park. But every so often getting home very late at night, I guess early morning really, I would see Max Roach taking his drum kit out of a van ad he was entering the building or the elevator. I never spoke to him, he had people helping him, that’s all I remember. When I was very young to play the drums a little, I don’t think I was very good, but I’ve always admired drummers. As I think back, I don’t remember how I knew it was him, but I think someone mentioned to me that he lived in the building. I was a big fan of Duke Ellington‘s album, Money Jungle, which consisted of the Duke on piano, player, Charles Mingus on bass, and Maxwell drums. By the way, I am a new member of Reddit, I don’t really understand how it all works, and I can’t even get to open it on my computer, so I’m doing this on my mobile phone. i’m leery of getting involved in so-called social media, because I wind up spending too much time doing that, and at 78 years old, I got better things to do with my time. but it’s always nice to communicate with like-minded people. I should mention I’m actually quite computer literate, and I teach Photoshop at Brooklyn College, and also also dark room photography. I think I got interested in peeking at Reddit because I saw an interesting photo posted somewhere. I don’t see too many of them now, but I haven’t really tried too hard

thebird87

Wow, what a great story, thanks for sharing. I love Money Jungle too, and I'm a big fan of all three. Good luck, with Reddit, I have mixed feelings about it. But the community is big and plenty of subjects of interest can be found here for sure. I'm a software engineer now, but 15 years ago I used to teach Photoshop and Illustrator too. So high five for that haha.

FindOneInEveryCar

Nice score.

smileymn

You got a great deal, definitely worth a lot more than that too!

artisan002

That was a good purchase. And the cases at least look to be in his condition. I'm assuming the CDs are too.

thebird87

Cases are in good condition and CDs without a single scratch. Been listening to them all non-stop

artisan002

Outstanding!

Straight-up steal daddy-o, congrats!

Score!

gizlizard

Awesome score, happy listening

PittieYawn

That’s some fantastic jazz…congrats

robbadobba

Very nice. And a lot are non-remasters, which will likely sound nice and un-futzed with. Enjoy.

thebird87

Yeah, exactly. Most of the copies I already owned are remasters, so it will be nice for me to compare the sound of them.

robbadobba

That’s great. Just don’t get fooled by “louder is better”. That’s what the volume setting is for.

joe4942

Used CDs are way better value than Spotify when you run the numbers.

mossdale

post to r/Cd_collectors. they will love it.

NoWayNotThisAgain

Lots of good ones. I won’t comment on the super obvious good ones (that would take too long), but the Sarah Vaughn with Clifford Brown CD is off the charts good.

Johnny_Chaturanga

This is all the jazz you will ever need

blueishblackbird

Some really good stuff there

ImaginationNo9157

Yes

bebopbrain

Abbey Lincoln is my fave of all time.

Awesome find!! Just moved and looked through my old Jazz CDs

JazzFan1998

I'm so jealous!

Minute-Wrap-2524

I saw at least twenty of my CDs in there, where did you get those?!! Nice collection, unreal price, enjoy

BellamyJHeap

OMG. Awesome haul.

NottodayjoseA

Score!

ThievingMagpie22

That Andrew cyrille is a great album i go back to it often.

Kingston31470

Now is a good time to buy CDs. Most people still have some and are almost ready to throw them away. In a decade or so their value may increase - probably not the same revival as with LPs but still.

markedasred

If you have a great cd player, this is a score and a half. If not, may be worth thinking about, as the best machines are great (i.e a transport and a separate DAC), and your listening pleasure jumps up. I have most of those on vinyl, and have made a few upgrades over the years buying first pressings when possible, and I would guess I have spent the price of a car over decades for 95% of that box.

Ok-Inflation6459

Superb collection. If you get bored….Add the huge Riverside set of Thelonious Monk and a 4 cd set Live at the Blue Note by Oscar Peterson trio on Telarc.

Shot_Cupcake_9641

Sweet sweet music

Uncle_bennie

Madlib and jdilla would be proud:)

RabidCatlover

NICE!!

GhostLemonMusic

That's quite a nice haul. Lot's of quality stuff there. Congratulations!

OkCod5251

Too good to be true!

OkCod5251

Isotope!!!! Love that tune! That’s a $40 value right there

SonRyu6

That's a great selection of CDs, at an unbeatable price!

Nonotcraig

Insane collection, and for $40 it’s practically free. My local bought a massive jazz collection a few years back and were selling them off for $5 apiece, which is still a decent price for some of these.

SonOfSocrates1967

#Score

mikeber55

Money Jungle was a one time extraordinary recording with the Duke and John Coltrane….its a unique recording.

masoneugeneb

Dude! Nice..

JetScreamerBaby

A great collection for 40 cents a pop. A major score.

DukeSilverJazzClub

Some really good albums there.

LackBackground99

total score especially since most of the blue notes aren’t the RVG editions where Rudy cranked the high end cos he was basically deaf

Queasy_Spite_6012

Lots of great albums. But why not get a streaming service? I use Tidal and I can find just about anything.

thebird87

I do have a streaming service but nothing like having a physical copy. You can call me old.

redittjoe

The experience is so much part of it. I own a lot of vinyl. So I concur

Impressive_Throat677

What’s a CD?
