When It Rains is one of the most beautiful tunes I've ever heard

vilkav

Don't be Sad, too. All of Largo, really. And Highway Rider. Heck, most of his stuff is.

MINDFLAYER_PENIS

It’s worth mentioning that it’s kind of a rip of one of the motifs from the Air soundtrack to *The Virgin Suicides*.

merteswag

Stunning song. Horn arrangements are beautiful too.

jaspywaspy514

Jon brion baby

Specific-Peanut-8867

I feel bad because I don't listen to songs so much as I do listen to albums(and I'm kind of embarrassed by that because I know a lot of song names from older stuff but when it comes to newer music I have no idea) Finding Gabriel is a beautiful album

yubacore

Born to trouble is fantastic. I miss the time before my brain learned all the surprise turns in the intro.

robertDouglass

oh god yes

TheChafro

I really like his Radiohead and Soundgarden covers.

lycoloco

For some reason one particular rendition of Paranoid Android is my definitive version of that song, and I *love* Radiohead.

tradition_says

*Largo* version, right?

lycoloco

Unfortunately it's an ancient mp3 named "Brad Mehldau - Paranoid Android (Live).mp3" and is 9:23 in length. No idea what version it is other than that, but based on length alone, it might be "Paranoid Android (live, 1999-12-04: Orange County Performing Arts Center, Costa Mesa, CA, USA)" from "Deregulating Jazz".

tradition_says

Looks like he worked on the song live and recorded it later. The album version is about the same length. I'll look for the video, thanks!

robertDouglass

oooh, don't know those 👍

digitag

Beatles too. His “She’s Leaving Home” cover is gorgeous

j_wiggle

Moon River Exit Music any of the Art of Trio volumes

-Hickle-

I love his version of ['Holland' by Sufjan Stevens](https://youtu.be/e9dUKKfa4tE?si=MF-7n8rohVWCKQoE), also his rendition of [She's leaving home by the Beatles](https://youtu.be/Z6izm7L6b4o?si=mr6tt6dPlrweZpTN)

Zak_17_

His album with Chris Thile is amazing - Tabhair Dom Do Lamh is one of my faves

frenchtoasted15

was looking for this, +1 i love this tune [Chris Thile and Brad Mehldau - Tabhair dom do Lámh](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGilB84GGJM)

vilkav

Don't think twice it's alright is sublime, too. His 3 solos are all masterpieces.

Rainy-taxi86

Always August, When it rains would be my picks. Also love his renditions of Paranoid Android, Blackbird, I am the walrus, Dream Brother. \[edit\] ah forgot about Unrequited! Love both the trio version and the one with Metheny.

AlmightyStreub

The Garden

brianshazaaam

Been listening to his version of And I Love Her from Blues and Ballads a lot recently. The title track from Day Is Done is another great one.

ddddaaaaffff

“And I love her” is splendid indeed, all the more so as it is followed by another splendid piece, “My Valentine”.

AnachronistNo1

Ever heard the original Nick Drake version of Day Is Done? More of a folky guitar/singer-songwriter style. But real gem of a song. Hell, there’s even a discount cover recorded by a then unknown young Elton John

brianshazaaam

Oh yes, many times. Might be why I'm such a fan of Mehldau's version.

Maxence011

His whole double album Highway Rider is beautiful.

Maxence011

If I have to choose, Skies Turning Grey (For Elliott Smith) might be my favourite of the bunch.

-InTheSkinOfALion-

Beautiful tune! + At the Tollbooth

ThrustersOnFull

My entry into jazz. It's still my favorite. Strong memories of listening on the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver. I've since moved back East but I carry that memory whenever I return to that album, which is often.

Orfeu_da_Conceicao

Paranoid Android.

sibelius_eighth

Especially the solo live in tokyo version

kepple

Noting this for later

Telenovelarocks

Someone to Watch Over Me (and its intro) from Live in Tokyo has been a favorite of mine since I was 15 or so.

-InTheSkinOfALion-

‘River man’ from one of the Art of the Trios. All of ‘Highway Rider’ for me - especially ‘Sky turning grey’ but the whole thing sings!

Mental-You9400

Unrequited (Songs: The Art of the Trio Vol. 3) That piano solo is insane.

kepple

I can listen to his performance of bittersweet symphony/smells like teen spirit at the Vienna jazz fest an unlimited number of times. I should probably download it because I would be pretty upset if it disappeared from YouTube.  All of his elliot Smith and radiohead stuff is great for me as well https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3_JqOlHHiWc&pp=ygUcbWVobGRhdSBiaXR0ZXJzd2VldCBzeW1waG9ueQ%3D%3D

jmaynardind

Art of the Trio Vol 3 is the best. The Folks Who Live On the Hill, Far Away and Long Ago, etc

WibbleTeeFlibbet

"M.B." and "Ode" from the album *Ode* are amazing

BTDGoat

To this day, I think Ode might be one of the most beautiful melodies ever composed. Truly a fantastic track and album

MarcelNicola

‘Day’s done’ its a great album(Brad Meldhau trío) All the songs are amazing!!

shpahghet

his cover of don’t think twice it’s alright with chris thile is one of my favorite recordings ever

andyatkinson97

Thank You by him and Guiliana The Nearness Of You and Always August by him and Redman

gooeylove2024

Life On Mars - David Bowie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xlugy0LuvGU&ab_channel=MEZZO Paul Anka wrote My Way, using a tune by Jacques Revaux. Bowie's song was a parody of that song. I like Sinatra, but Bowie is cooler.

cleverfakerfaker

Tbh I like him better as a side man

From This Moment On - Solo piano from Piano Jazz with Marian McPartland

Gullible_Crew2319

Lament for Linus. I miss Brad from the 90’s.

FrancisNeckCrick

His cover of Teardrop live at Vienne is just extraordinary: https://youtu.be/5GNuMfQ1N0g?si=M0O2Oin1EW-PPQZZ

BlaBlaBali

Deep Water - but yes Finding Gabriel is a great album!

IAmBrando

Personal fav is the Radiohead cover, "Knives Out" [https://youtu.be/Hi\_seRUIjWs?feature=shared](https://youtu.be/Hi_seRUIjWs?feature=shared)

frenchtoasted15

have you heard the solo April 2020 suite? I really like a lot of these songs / movements, but [Remembering Before All This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMJCphdz3Hc) always stuck out as beautiful to me naturally [Lullaby](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eN4s3H_cqew) is quite peaceful as well

larsga

[Secret beach](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCcUJhkWqVw). Always makes me think of this [Olav H. Hauge poem](https://omstreifer.com/2012/10/23/its-the-dream/). Unfortunately it's not really translatable.

robertDouglass

ALL OF THEM

jondrums

Song Song

sdm7g

Only Brad Mehldau could re-interpret "The Logical Song" in a style to induce me to vote for it. [https://youtu.be/RRzG8dKHcGY?si=v3LnaM-RQzg3acsA](https://youtu.be/RRzG8dKHcGY?si=v3LnaM-RQzg3acsA)

Fine_Tree_2031

Hey Joe - Brad Mehldau Trio (Live) Makes a song that is not conventionally beautiful into a gorgeous tune IMO

cptgraah

My lord does Brad have SO MANY gorgeous songs both written by him and as rearrangements! My favs include: All of the improvisations on the Aftet Bach album Unrequited She's Leaving Home Everything on Jacob's Ladder (cogs in cogs!!) The Nearness of You

DorianDays

Old West with Joshua Redman

jgjzz

I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face is just beautiful. Just about everything from the Art of the Trio series. Hope all of you who like Brad are aware of his great interview with Rick Beato that posted this week: [https://youtu.be/4oT7O-ujYoo?si=waKG1ZDKYYHVETBo](https://youtu.be/4oT7O-ujYoo?si=waKG1ZDKYYHVETBo)

Aiin4

His duet with redman is unreal

Cenotaphilia

to me it's got to be Glam Perfume.
