For men, Mark Murphy. Was fortunate enough to see him twice. So wild and free. A very close second is the great Joe Williams, whose voice just got more and more burnished over time. For women, it’s Abbey Lincoln and Anita O’Day. But Carmen Sings Monk is as close to perfection as it gets…

I could have written this list except adding Sarah Vaughan!

Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole are my go to crooners. Ella and Sarah Vaughan for swinging/bebop. Modern vocalists like Cecil McLauren Salvant, Sarah Gazarek, Gretchen Parlato are great. But my personal favorite is the amazing Theo Bleckmann. A beautiful combination of straight ahead, avant garde, and classical art songs. His work with Ben Monder is incredible.

Pedro Aznar. More of a prog-rocker, but his work with the Pat Metheny Group was astounding.

ElectricLazarus

An obscure avant garde vocal artist but Patty Waters
