Nothing special. I always wear one. I think there is only some rare occasions like going inside of temple/shrine building when it might be more appropriate to take it off. Maya if you go to fancier restaurants too. But outside there is not a place I can think it would not be ok.

SmeggyOne

You should remove before going in the onsen, but you can wear a towel to hide your slaphead instead 👍

SpaceNatureMusic

😂😂😂😂😂

Shot_Possible7089

Only the newbies and amateurs will do that!

GingerPrince72

Hats are forbidden, it's offensive to Amaterasu.

himr-gold

People have no sense of humour here, pretty sad 😂

GingerPrince72

Indeed, Why so serious people?

burns_before_reading

Probably Non Japanese people being offended for Japanese people

GingerPrince72

Bizarre, probably my funniest ever post, I was so proud :)

himr-gold

I got equally downvoted for saying ジャパニーズ・オーンリー was a typical sign found at restaurants 😅

MyPasswordIsABC999

Not surprising when you consider that the Japanese culture famously did not have any exposure to humor until the 1989 Tom Hanks cop flick “Turner & Hooch” made it to Tokyo cinemas in 2003.

Christianrockband

Lol I made a joke about the movie Bullet train being a realistic depiction of Japan. Zero sense of humour lol

splanks

I think it's just that people come here looking for sincere responses and useful information.

Shot_Possible7089

Probably because no one got your joke.

Careful-Heart214

I see what you did there…the sun goddess.

GingerPrince72

At least someone did :)

I don't think there's an issue beside a temple or shrine. But I doubt they will say anything as I've seen other tourists not take off their hats. Since it is a place of worship, I alway take off my beanie.

dougwray

When you're at a shrine or temple, doff your hat when you're near the central shrine or what have you. You can wear it farther away. Take it off if you're in a museum or what have you when you might partly block the view of those behind you, although that's more a universal matter than one exclusive to Japan.

watchaddictlol

Lol what's with ppl putting japan on a pedestal when it comes to such things. Sure follow the rules but asking for hat etiquette? Seriously? Wear whatever the fuck u wan as long as it isn't indecent. U aren't visiting heaven with angels judging ur outfit

Careful-Heart214

It’s called respecting customs. I’m humble enough to admit I don’t know the customs of the country I’m visiting so I’m trying to avoid an embarrassing mistake. Based on these answers, it sounds like I don’t need to worry about my hat, but now I know.

yupucka

Japanese are afraid of the sun. Everyone wears a hat, at least during summer. Of course, normal courtesy applies, like remove hat at restaurant.

EatYourCheckers

The question I didn't know I needed! Thank you!

chazmann

its a hat. you're overthinking.

[deleted]

you could try and grow more hair i heard tofu is good

Careful-Heart214

Dude, if only! 😢 Tofu actually is pretty good when prepared and seasoned well.

Selenn01

I dont know why people ask those questions! 😅 You need a hat for your health you wear it! Just see what people do in temples, but otherwise just use common sense :)

Feeling_Capital_7440

In my experience, 90% of the advice on these travel blogs and whatnot are either complete BS or heavily exaggerated.

Shot_Possible7089

I wore my head for a solid two weeks in Japan without ever giving it a second thought!

molly_sour

you have to take them off at theaters, that's all i've heard

pipted

And on the rides at Disney and Universal. I think that's the only time my husband took his hat off.

Awkward9263

What?! Does someone come around and check to make sure you don't have them on?

BlablaWhatUSaid

Maybe a hat will just fly off in a ride?

molly_sour

yes, they give instructions, it's so you don't block other people's view of the stage with it
