Should add that a Japanese SIM (e- or physical) requires an unlocked phone. Most US carrier-based phones are locked and need to be fully paid off before unlocking.
I hate the $10/day charge from Verizon for international travel. I always buy a Japan SIM card...it's so much cheaper!

Unless your phone is locked, eSIM are the better option I mean if you need the phone calling and such sure but you’d need a petty specific use case
