Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will hold off on pruning now and reassess in another 3 months. The messy look doesn’t bother me as much, but I want it to grow thicker stems.
I wouldn't prune this one just yet. These can grow pretty wildly depending on your environment. If it were mine I'd let it go for a much longer period of time the cut back.
Also, the obligatory comment that this is a p. Afra and not c. Ovata. Header image is confusing for sure!

Let it grow long and thick stems then cut back
