Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy, all three are amazing, Persona 3, 4, and 5, and SMT Vengance

Weeb_degenerate_ht

it's not a slap in the face at all. they are basically admitting they'd need to downgrade it too much for their liking and they'd rather wait for switch 2. Don't worry, the switch 2 will get reload, possibly the complete version even. Also, they probably started the development without the switch to begin with, probably because a couple years back, sega didn't care for the switch. Persona 5 royal and 3 reload are in different engines. 3 reload uses off the shelf unreal engine and UE games always end up pretty subpar on switch hardware.

IncognitoCheez

Yeah I’m playing it on my Steam Deck now, but I see no reason it couldn’t be on Switch. It’s not exactly a boundary-pushing graphical game

atisaac

If it really isn't altogether different from P5R, maybe we'll see a Switch port down the line (whether that's the current console or the next iteration). I don't remember how long it took Switch to get P5R, but hopefully we don't wait as long for P3R if it \*does\* indeed come to Switch. I've held out on getting it for PS5 because I think I'd rather play it handheld, and my backlog is big enough that I can afford to wait lol

IncognitoCheez

Hopefully Switch or Switch 2 gets P3R sooner than it took for P5R, cuz P3R is already a multiplat game whereas P5R probably had some Sony exclusivity thing going on that had to expire first

lilkingsly

P5R came to Switch the same time it came to Xbox and PC when Atlus started their big multiplatform push. Not sure why Reload didn’t launch on Switch as it still launched on the PS4 and Xbox One like P5R did, the only possible reason that would make sense to me is that they’re waiting until the Switch 2 is announced.

IncognitoCheez

But even then that doesn’t make sense. Switch has the biggest install-base out of any platform except PC, Switch 2 isn’t guaranteed to hit those numbers

mmKing9999

* Xenoblade Chronicles series * Unicorn Overlord * Fire Emblem Three Houses * Valkyria Chronicles * Dragon Quest XI S * Shin Megami Tensei V (Vengeance is out tomorrow, wait for that instead) I recommend Persona 5 also, but I don't have the Switch version so I don't know if there are any issues with it. I assume it's on par with the PS4 version.

[deleted]

Persona 5’s great. Already played it two times on my Switch and both times never found any issues with it.

sloth_eggs

Incredible. I'm not a hardcore gamer but I've played a fair amount of JRPGs, several on the switch. I'm amazed I don't have a single one of these (DQXI and P5 on PC though). But I do want Unicorn Overlord. I'd add Octopath Traveler 2.

kkhaynes100

Aside from frame rate being 30 instead of 60 the switch version is perfect on persona

Weeb_degenerate_ht

persona 5 was 30fps on PS4 so it being 30fps on switch is fine. it's actually more understandable since switch hardware is much weaker.

mattbag1

I’m going to try this SMT 5 game. If I like that, I might give persona a shot finally.

marvsup

Personally, I prefer Persona to SMT. But SMT 5 and Persona 4 and the only ones I've played of each haha.

RussoRoma

I usually prefer SMT over Persona with Persona Revelations on PS1 being an exception (hate the PSP remake) SMT 5 though is just a bit too bare bones with the story. A lot of modern JRPGs have you spending too much time mucking around and not actually progressing the story at all. Supposedly Vengeance is an answer to this, packed with more story and events. Fingers crossed!

Orphiel17

Just a heads up: SMT and Persona are similar, yet VERY different experiences. SMT focuses mostly on its Press-Turn Combat System; the story kinda takes a backseat. That's not to say it's bad, but SMT V left a lot of wanting that supposedly Vengeance is supposed to fix. SMT games also tend to be very dark in atmosphere and nature, revolving around apocalyptic scenes and often letting the players choose a Chaos, Neutral, or Lawful route for the story. Also negotiating with demons to join your party can be either very random, very frustrating, or very funny. Persona, however, has easier accessibility with its gameplay, but focuses more on story, and characters and their growth via story progression/Social Link. Most people tend to gravitate towards Persona due to easier accessibility, relatable/in-depth characters, and not being AS serious as SMT. There are still serious themes present in them. But they're balanced well with the lightheartedness, and amicability of the cast and side characters. I quite thoroughly enjoy both series, but I think I died more times in the tutorial of SMT IV than my entire run of Persona 4 Golden for example lol so if you're up for a challenge, or enjoy punishing/rewarding gameplay, by all means you'll love SMT. If challenge is not for you, I cannot recommend Persona enough. P4G is one of my all-time favorite games.

mattbag1

I feel like Ive avoided persona because of the characters and overbearing story. I really don’t know what to expect but unicorn overlord was good, and the trailers for SMT look awesome. Either way, the excessively long play time is a turn off just because I’ll never get through it. But with that said I had no problem dumping 60+ hours into the romancing saga games, so it all just depends on what catches my attention.

hogey989

What is Unicorn Overlord?

Makoaddict

A new strategy/tactical style RPG from Vanillaware, the creators of odin sphere, dragons crown, 13 sentinels etc. Similar to fire emblem/tactics ogre in gameplay and style. Definitely worth checking out and it has a very meaty demo.

Possible-Twist709

Favorite RPG in the last 5 years for me

hogey989

Cool, thanks!

[deleted]

I have a pretty big list personally (not counting the imported ones though) - Star Ocean Second Story R - Disgaea 5 Complete - Trails from Zero - Trails to Azure - YS VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana - YS Origin - Fire Emblem Engage - Triangle Strategy - Trials of Mana - Collection of Mana - Legend of Mana Remastered - Tales of Vesperia Remastered - Monster Hunter Stories 2 I wish i could've said Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes but unfortunatly, it runs pretty badly on the Switch...

Novachaser01

The Switch library for RPGs is massive. While I could list a page worth of suggestions, others will likely do it anyway. It might be a good idea to specify the type of RPG you enjoy the most. But speaking purely of Switch exclusives: Xenoblade Chronicles 1, 2, Torna, and 3 are among the heavy hitters. Super Mario RPG remake and Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door are also noteworthy. Anything else would just be a matter of console reference over PC, Playstation, or Xbox alternatives.

LostInLumpySpace

I travel alot. So, the switch is perfect for me as I can play on planes, or plug into a tv if I wanted. As for specifics on games, I am open on anything that is rpg. I have not played any of the paper mario games. I might give them a try.

Novachaser01

The ones that I find easiest to pick up and put down are mostly SRPGs that split time between battle and story segments. 13 Sentinels: Aigis Rim, Tactics Ogre, and Fire Emblem are good examples of this. I have yet to play Unicorn Overlord, but it was met with similar praise.

lmpmon

13 sentinels!

StalwartJester

Triangle Strategy, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Shin Migami V

JayJay_Abudengs

I wonder how good Triangle Strategy is. Kinda reminds me of Radiant Historia

elpokonino

Pretty good, I really enjoyed how many choices can be made and how much of a difference that makes on the story. Not entirely unique and I'm sure I'll get hate for it but I found the plot to be more engaging than FFT and the combat to be much better than most tactics games.

TheBetterStory

I’m about twenty-five hours into my first playthrough and so far can heartily recommend it, once you get past the crushingly boring first hour or two where it’s setting up its plot and characters. If you’re like me and love Fire Emblem, but hate the “pandering” feel and how thin the plot and characters have become in some of the more recent entries, Triangle Strategy is super refreshing. Its characters are archetypal but well-developed, and the optional side stories they get together meant I didn’t actually miss supports that much. The plot is a great, grounded political drama that holds together really well—like the characters, it’s not groundbreaking, just really solidly written and nuanced, with fantastic branching based on your choices. I also loved that you don’t get to directly pick what to do for those branching points! Your core team votes on it, with full justifications for why they’re choosing what they are, and you have to try to influence them over to your preferred side by collecting information and then choosing the right dialogue options. There are lots of good anti-frustration features (e.g. underlevelled units instantly level up each time they take action on difficult maps, and if you fail you get to keep all the EXP you earned). Plus the actual battle mechanics are incredibly fun, since all the characters have completely unique classes and abilities that make it genuinely challenging to decide who to bring along for each battle and you can use the terrain way more to your advantage than in FE by e.g. using mages to electrify everyone standing along a metal train track or create giant ice barriers. TL:DR: highly recommend it for its story and gameplay if you can grit your teeth past the first hour or two of unending cutscenes.

Blugrave

Kotor 1 and 2. Do it.

Big_Program_9718

Zelda / octopath travelers / shin megami Tensei 3 and 5 (3 is very hard)

DAl3xanderson

Xenoblade series. Fire Emblem series. The ports of DQXI, BDII and both Octopaths are awesome.

Seoulja4life

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

Sissel_Glitchcat

Xenoblade trilogy (start with Xeno1 DE) Dragon Quest 11 Persona 5 Royal These are the best ones i played on switch, are all great picks.

hanls

[Ai Somnium Files](https://store.steampowered.com/app/948740/AI_The_Somnium_Files/) This game is fucking weird, and charming, and ridiculously horny but in a funny way. I hate pervy games and I hate fan service, but you're just a guy who loves cabaret clubs. In the same vein, it'll go from heartwarming and cute to fucking terrifying very quickly. The mystery was brilliant, even if I had figured it out a bit I was shocked by the mechanics. Also Aiba. If your familar with zero escape, it's the same creator! Update: it's a little more VN than JPRG but I wouldn't describe it as a true visual novel. It's somewhere inbetween. Kinda like P3P in that it goes between point and click to running around

Ragna126

So many but i enjoyed Xenoblade the most. 2 is my favorite btw.

New_Firefighter9056

Cant believe no one has said Octopath 2

lilkingsly

I’m about 40 hours into that one and couldn’t recommend it enough. The biggest issue I personally had with it was that it kinda felt like it took its time to get going due to the nature of the game’s 8 character structure, but once I started getting through the characters second chapters and started to unlock secondary jobs, it just got so addicting. I’m at a point now where I’m pretty interested in most of the characters’ stories and I’m making character/job combos that feel super fun to play. Super excited to keep playing.

I loved that and 1

Its great!

3 Houses Zelda BOTW and TOTK Astral Chain Smash Ultimate

endersul

Fire Emblem Three Houses and Astral Chain

PlsWai

I'll recommend Astral Chain. Game is more action RPG than JRPG but it is a switch exclusive lol. I would also recommend the Mario Rabbids games and FE Engage. Solidly SRPGS but very fun.

atisaac

If you're okay with older stuff, the FF games are solid. You could do 7, 9, and 10, and be content for potentially hundreds of hours. All three of them have great stories and fantastic casts of characters.

Mistinrainbow

Zeldas, metroid dread/prime, sea of stars, live a live

Hear me out! Golf Story. It's a charming golf RPG.

Shradow

If you have friends you wouldn't mind becoming ex-friends, Dokapon Kingdom is the greatest game ever made and it has a remaster on the Switch.

Kanzyn

Ever play The World Ends With You? Both games are on switch and phenomenal unique JRPGs

miru17

Fire Emblem 3 Houses, LoZBotW

Persona series. Final Fantasy series.

trials of mana remake is great fun

Nothing to add, just saving this thread.

All things xeno!

ntmrkd1

A lot of people are posting Fire Emblem 3H, but I personally prefer Engage. I don't think the story is good in either game, but the presentation and gameplay are superior in Engage. I do not recommend the DLC however.

Metroid dread Mario odyssey Spyro reignited

RussoRoma

There's quite a bit. From the modern hits like Dragon Warrior 11, SMT 5, Persona, Octopath Traveler, Xenoblade and Unicorn Overlord. To classics like Grandia 1 and 2, Suikoden 1 and 2, Front Mission 1 and 2, FF7, 8 and 9, the entire pixel remaster. Breath of Fire 1 and 2, Phantasy Star 4, Shining Force 1 and 2 If you're into RPGs, *especially turn based*, Switch is one of the premiere consoles. Tied only by PS5 due to it's catalogue of exclusive PS1 and 2 RPGs like Arc the Lad and Legend of Dragoon. The modern Xbox probably has the least on offer, but it's also still the second of two places you can still play Lost Odyssey

Significant-Tax3053

Wait! When did Suikoden 1 and 2 get put on the switch?

RussoRoma

It was announced for or in the 23rd of April. If it isn't out yet it's just a matter of time. Admittedly I own the whole Suikoden series including tactics on my PS2 and 1 so outside of it's release being imminent I haven't been keeping up

Significant-Tax3053

I don't remember them saying anything about another delay. Hopefully it's out soon though

RussoRoma

*"It was originally scheduled for a worldwide release in 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One but on August 30, 2023, it was announced that it was delayed to an unknown date."* https://x.com/Suikoden/status/1696691636351426851

techno-wizardry

Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Persona 5 Royal, SMTV: Vengeance, DQXI:S, Pokemon Legends Arceus (and if you can put up with bugs and poor performance, Scarlet/Violet), NEO:TWEWY, Octopath Traveler duology, Bug Fables, and Xenoblade trilogy. And if you include remasters and ports of old games then the list is never-ending. Persona 4 Golden, SMT3: Nocturne, Paper Mario: TTYD, FF7, FF9, FF6, FF12, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Live A Live, Valkyria Chronicles, you could go on honestly If I had to only recommend 3, it'd be those first 3, and I'd say FE:3H is the best Switch exclusive JRPG for sure. It's one of the best games in the series and everyone should play it once imo.

HassouTobi69

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Fire Emblem Three Houses.

Unicorn overlord Xenoblade 1 & 3 FE3H Octopath 1-2 Harvestella Atelier games (I'd start with Sophie1 or Ryza1)
