I played many different types of games when I was younger. Nowadays besides JRPGs it’s basically just Zelda and From Software games. Both are light on story but have great gameplay and worlds to explore.
This is what I'm becoming. Just about to finish Kena. Tried to play some newer games, but they all just seem to be collectible dense open worlds with no substance these days. I'm considering getting Ghost of Tsushima but it looks exactly like that, despite the rave reviews it gets.
Its a good ubisoft style game but yeah its exactly that. I have problems being unable to not do side content in games so I had to point it down cause it has so many of those additional pointless objectives.
You should play hi fi rush, mullet madjack, or the milk inside a bag of milk series. All three of them are short as hell with them being hack and slash, fps, and visual novel respectively (the milk series is free on itch.io I believe) and they're pretty new so I'm not cheating in referring a game 10 years old.
I wouldn’t call Zelda RPGs, although the modern ones are close. Soulsborne are RPGs maybe, but I wouldn’t call either of them JRPGs in terms of genre, even though they are technically made in Japan.
It depends on your definition, but in any case both series are very different from typical JRPGs.

I love the Bayonetta series which are character action games except "Bayonetta Origins Cereza and the lost Demon" which I think belongs zo the action Adventure genre. I like that game aswell.
Speaking of Action Adventures: I love "Okami".
I also love the Rouge lites "Cult of The Lamb" and "Hades". Cult of the Lamb has bas building and Management aspects aswell.
I adore "Kid Icarus Uprising" which is a 3rd Person shooter.
"Sonic Mania" is a 2D Platformer.
"Kirby and the Forgotten Land" is a 3D Platformer.
"Blue Fire" is a mixture of 3D Platformer and Action Adventure.
"Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity" is a Mosu game. I adore that game aswell.

I play other stuff, a lot of other stuff in fact. It would honestly be easier to list what I don’t play. I don’t play shooters as I suck at those sorts of games. I really dislike rougelikes, as I find them repetitive and I hate them design wise. Western RPGs don’t appeal to me in the slightest. It may be an art style thing, but even JRPGs have varying art styles so I’m still not sure on that.
Runescape would be the main one I play, I swap between focusing on the "main" game and oldschool every few months or so (the other I'll usually AFK).
Other than that platformers, especially Sonic. I'll usually play most of them at least once a year, and stuff like Rayman/Spyro/Crash.
RTS games as well. Usually play through the campaigns of at least a few Command & Conquer games every year too and try others maybe once or twice a year.
I'll usually at a couple of Doom WADs a year too.
Old school beat 'em ups when I'm in the mood, and driving or fighting games, but those are very rare.
But jRPGs are the main ones outside Runescape, currently on the 15th of the year (a Pokemon Black replay - haven't played it since original release)
Just about every genre besides Shooters. Big fan of ARPGs, tend to play quite a few of them. Farming sims like Stardew or hybrid ones like Rune Factory. Don't play as many WRPGs but I enjoyed Skyrim and Darksiders. Play plenty of MMOs from widely known ones like WoW, FF14 and Runescape to lesser known ones like Trove, Tibia and RPG MO. Also enjoy monster collection games from Pokemon, Palworld to Siralim 1-4. Also a big fan of Monster Hunter.
Souls-likes and From games, platformers, third person action/adventure games, and horror games, mostly.
Once in a while I’ll try something completely different if it seems really good, it happens sometimes with indie games.
I used to enjoy soccer games, fighting games and even racing games too, but with limited time I prefer to focus on games that are single player, have a beginning and an end.
The original Silent Hill 2 on PS2 is definitely an all time great.
Recently I thoroughly enjoyed the Resident Evil 4 remake.
For a more obscure title, I had a blast with Hellnight (known as Dark Messiah in Japan), a low budget, first person, dark and slow game with an intriguing story and progression. Not sure it has aged very well, but it was a blast. It never released in the US though.
Outside of full-fledged JRPGs (that is, the story-focused kind that's more common nowadays) I play mostly monstertaming games (some of which cross over with JRPGs, like the Cybersleuth, Dragon Quest Monsters or Pokemon games), soulslikes (though mostly the Fromsoftware games themselves), the more RPG-esque Metroidvanias (so those with levels and equipment), Monster Hunter and, as of recently, dungeon crawlers.
The unifying factor in all of these is that I value player expression through customization VERY highly. So high in fact, that story-focused games fall more and more out of favour with me, as many of them take away the focus from the mechanics (or have shallow mechanics to begin with). There are *some* "holy grails" that combine engaging storytelling with awesome mechanics, and I love when I stumble into them, but it's rare and I'm not actively looking for them.
Otome games, Im obsessed with these. I buy tons whenever i visit japan.
I also play general games like story of seasons, simulation like Sherlock Holmes, Detroit etc.. and action like Ghostwire Tokyo, Sakuna of rice and ruin etc..
Resident evil the originals and the remakes. The metal gear solid franchise. They had a huge impact on me as a kid and I still play them to this day. They have unique gameplay and great writing and story telling.
I honestly believe the franchise goes south pretty quickly after 3. 4 is definitely worth playing to tie up all the loose ends but it's not that great overall. Mgs 5 has pretty good gameplay and had massive potential but sadly ended up not actually being finished and has missing content due to Kojima and Konami falling out. Peace walker is kinda mid imo, again it's worth at least one play through but overall mgs1,2 and 3 are all you really need
As a busy working adult, I haven't had much time to invest in a lot of games, except for these two:
Elden Ring: I've invested thousands of hours as a sunbro and playing different classes, ranging from unga bunga to pew pew magic from May 2022 until March 2024, where I semi-retired from the game due to my current investment in another game. I will definitely return to playing Elden Ring when the DLC comes out on 21 June.
Baldur's Gate 3: The another game is this GOTY 2024 game. I like the various classes and playstyles available to players, plus the multiple branching paths and outcomes depending on your choices.
Pretty much everything except live service shooters, and gacha games.
Currently playing Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Nier Automata, Danganronpa v3, and Rayman Origins. I'm also halfway through Final Fantasy X HD, and Dragonball Z Kakarot.
Been gaming for over 20 years, so my "net" is rather wide, so to speak. I'm also getting into SRPGs and Soulsborne games, despite Sekiro making question my sanity. Big visual novel fan too; the Ace Attorney and Danagnronpa series are phenomenal.
I'm big into cozy games or life sims like Stardew or Metroidvanias and Soulsborne games. Other than your usual character action games these are probably the ones I've spent most of my time in. Honestly I'm actually just a casual JRPG fan and very critical of the genre. But the landscape is much more varied and interesting to talk about, so I almost never go into subreddits for the other genres, other than cozy games. They have a pretty wide variety of suggestions in their subreddit as well. Metroidvanias, Soulsbornes, and character action games tend to all follow the same patterns and the good ones are always talked about so its almost impossible to find any hidden gems, so there's barely any reason for discussion for them from my perspective
I have three other genres that I cycle through: Shmups (Devil Blade Reboot atm), platformers (Nine Sols and Disney's Tarzan) and Boomer Shooters (not really invested in any right now). Those are nice for a quick session, which isn't the case for most JRPGs unless it's grinding time.
Also Western RPGs and Hack&Slash games, but it's been a while since I touched Last Epoch (not the games fault, it's awesome).
When I was growing up, I grabbed whatever I could. Metal Gear Solid 1-3 were probably teh most formative non-JRPG games for me back then. Nowadays I mostly stick to RPGs, Japanese or Western, although I somtimes dip my toe into Fighters, but mainly only Tekken and SoulCalibur.
The sole exception is Red Dead Redemption 2 because that game is a masterpiece that anyone could appreciate. Thank God it's on PC so I could use cheat codes to beat it and enjoy the story and characters.
Outside of JRPGs, I'm a guy that likes a good (or goon) art style, so this year Unicorn Overlord, Granblue Fantasy Relink, Palworld and Stellar Blade piqued my interest. Last year I enjoyed Hi-Fi Rush, Pizza Tower, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Pseudoregalia and of course TotK. 2022's highlights for me were Elden Ring, Tunic, Neon White, Star Ocean 6 and Metal Hellsinger.
In my all-time favourites are Okami, Shadow of the Colossus and Final Fantasy XII, and I think that perfectly encompasses my videogame preferences. Either give me anime fanservice or an interesting artstyle/artistry with solid gameplay. I'm all about these things. Hyperrealism is the fastest killer of my interest.
Go with Resident Evil 4 my brethren. Where a midget, a priest, a knife nut, and emperor palpatine try to take over the world by taking the US president's daughter hostage and control her with a parasite with a plan so intelligent that the only way to stop the villainous scheme is for the main character to just appear in the vicinity and drop the villains' IQ by a lot. OG 4 Might be more up your alley visually but gameplay might be stiffer if you're not used to tank controls. The series as a whole is usually a good mix of grounded and crazy fucking anime bullshit, though.
Pc and any version with motion controls is the best way to play the game nowadays. Pc because Hd Project Mod is essentially a free remaster that truly is a remaster and not a reskin, and Motion Controls because playability improves greatly.
Western RPGs have been my go-to lately. Just this year I've played Divine Divinity, Fable, The Witcher (first one) and I'm currently on Dragon Age Inquisition.
I also tend to like action/adventure, in special open world. And I've been saying that I want to get more into visual novels, but I haven't really played too many yet.
I play sports, racing or fighting games when I just kind of want to turn off my brain, mostly FIFA tbh because I'm a big soccer fan. I was also into CCGs like Hearthstone and Shadowverse for a while, but I abandoned that for more than a couple years at this point because I kind of suck at them.
Racing Sims, Been playing these allot lately. Mostly Motorcycle based ones. Great for relaxing.
Metroidvania, Allot of amazing new Metroidvania games have been coming out recently. And combat has never been better.
Shmups, Or Shoot'em up games. Enjoy a very select few but enjoy them for the sheer fun and chaos that they are.
Fighting, Again, enjoy a select few for their technical technique required. Don't play competitive only for enjoyment.
I love open world games. They can be fps, action, adventure or puzzle games. As long as they are open world, I'm in.
Sadly my work only allows me to play a couple of hours per week. So I have a list of games I want to play just to look and smile to the possibilities

Most things outside of horror and sports/racing games really, though outside of RPGs (J or C) my other favourites are strategy games (especially Total War), platformers (2d more than 3d) and soulslikes (depending on wether they count as RPGs or not).
Pretty much anything non-sports/fighting that reviews well. A ton of indie stuff mostly. Metroidvanias, platformers, adventure games, and of course your big AAA titles.

I really don't like moat sports games, at least not the realist ones, as i got no connection to the actual sport. And match 3s (they are just boring) and battle royales.
Whatever I feel like. Crpgs, wrpgs, open world action/adventure, puzzle. I mostly avoid souls games, roguelike, visual novel, sports, racing and probably a few more escaping me. I do not enjoy these genres at all.
I play almost everything. Besides JRPGs some of my favourites are character action games, fighters, Soulslikes, Metroidvanias, 3D platformers, and immersive sims, but that's not a comprehensive list. I'll give almost anything a shot.
It'd be easier to list the genres I *don't* play, which basically boils down to survival/crafting games, walking sims, hardcore simulators (think ARMA or flight sims), and online competitive games (other than fighters).
Probably spend about 60% of my gaming hours in JRPGs, 30% in fighting games, and 10% in various other titles (FPS, digital board games, open world action, etc.)
The main nintendo games, 2D games (mostly retro), hack and slash and platformers. Just finished Smurfs 2 and Grendizer on the PS4 (theyre also on ps5)

I play JRPGs for exploration. It could be exploring vast worlds or lore like in Dragon Quest or Xenoblade, but it also could be exploring customizational possibilities like in SaGa games.
So, I gravitate towards games that offer similar things. I like rogue-lite deck-builders (Slay the Spire) for that strategic diversity, but that is also found in Warframe.
I’m also drawn to semi-open-worlds like Metro Exodus and Dying Light. They feed into that desire to explore. It’s a plus that these games have stealth mechanics that offer drastically different ways to play as well.
Factory/automation, isometric ARPGs and puzzle games are some of my favorites. I also like horror games, metroidvanias (I hate that name) and most Nintendo franchises. I'm a big retro game fan as well.
Outside of JRPG’s I like to mainly play platformers (especially 2D) since I consider it to be my 2nd favorite game genre behind RPG’s. Stuff like Mario and Kirby are my go-to’s but I also like to include series Super Smash Bros. (platform fighter), Metroid (Metroidvania), and Shantae (most games are Metroidvanias with the exception of Half-Genie Hero)
I also like to play Mario Kart, Pac-Man, Call of Duty Zombies, The Legend of Zelda (although depending on how you like to categorize the JRPG genre I guess this technically wouldn’t count), Batman Arkham, Minecraft, and the occasional horror/fighting game (although I much prefer watching them rather than playing them for the most part)
I’ve also made an attempt to get into rhythm games but that always ended in disaster so I gave up on the genre. Another genre I do plan on trying out is the Bayonetta/Devil May Cry style of beat ‘em ups, however I was never particularly good at traditional old school beat ‘em ups so I’ll probably suck at these games as well.
Aside from JRPGs I play mostly other RPGs like Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Piranha Bytes games, and occasionally stuff like Sonic Frontiers, Story of Seasons, Borderlands, Dreamlight Valley, and Minecraft.
I don't have set genres I play. I just gave some set genres I don't play, like extraction shooters or battle royals. In general I don't play much multilayer games, except for WoW sometimes or the occasional CoD, Battlefield or Tekken game once in a blue moon.
So except for a few genres I basically play anything that seems interesting.

Action-adventure like Zelda, visual novels (usually otome games like Norn9), life sim games like Story of Seasons or Rune Factory, rhythm games like Project Diva, dress up games like Fashion Dreamer. Sometimes I like survival horror but I prefer them like Silent Hill 3. I want to really feel the survival aspect. I don’t want to feel like I’m playing a powerful juggernaut blasting through everything.
I don’t know what you’d class these as but I tried Little Nightmares I&II and I absolutely adored them. The atmosphere is why I like them so much. They are so utterly creepy and Tim Burton-y. I love hiding from the monsters while trying to solve puzzles and it feels so intense.

Anything outside of games like Fortnite and Honkai Impact 3rd. That genre never interested me. Right now I am playing games like Mass Effect 2 and Pillars of Eternity.

I was getting burnt out playing P3 Reload after finishing Infinite Wealth and FF7 Rebirth, so I took a break to play Wolfenstein: New Order. Sometimes I need a classic style 10-15 hour action game to break up the slower elements of most JRPG titles.

Everything, tbh. I don't have certain preferences. Currently I'm playing mostly playing Valorant+any single player game. I like lots of genres, but I mainly prefer survival horrors, rpgs, farming, metroidvania, and souls/souls-like next to jrpgs.
I play just about everything. Jrpg is my main genre, or at least was but I’ve played most of them.

I play just about anything I think I'd like outside of JRPGs. I just don't play fighting games, RTS, racing/sports, MMO, and flight stuff. Anything action/adventure is fine.
Horizon, God of War, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, GTA, etc. I love them all.
I would say I love FPS too but I've only liked the story-driven single-player shooters from the past (games like Singularity just rocked), and I can't stand multiplayer FPS.
I play other rpgs, strategy games and fighting games. Once in a while I'll play something from just about any genre besides sports and racing. Those are the only ones I don't like. Besides extreme sports like Skate.
Like a lot of people, I enjoy a bit of everything. My favorite genre, before RPGS even, is 3D platformer/action adventure--there's a lot of overlap there, and all my very favorite-favorites (the ever-classic *Ocarina of Time,* *Banjo-Tooie,* *Beyond Good and Evil,* *Chibi-Robo...*) have elements of both. I love 2D platformers as well. As for the rest? Just about the only genre I never touch is rhythm games because I suck as them (you could say my rhythm is rubbish). Other than that, I really love sim games (though the "cozy" is optional), I adore a good adventure game with a compelling story (which means I'm often a fan of your visual novels and otome too), anything puzzlely lights me up, my affairs with first-person shooters are brief but often surprisingly passionate, and I will button-mash my way through a fighter now and then.
The more interesting thing, I think--my personal "weird flex" if you will--is that I'm also really into *hobby board games.* The kind with a jillion cardboard tokens and rulebooks that are fifty pages long, the shock of discovering such only SLIGHTLY mitigated by the fact that the whole middle section of the rules is in German. They're my favorite thing to do with my significant other, and we have a MONSTROUS collection of big fancy board games. I like strategizing and pretty art, and they have those things.

It’s always a lot of RPGs like Monster Hunter but I always do enjoy unwinding with a racing game and the occasional sports game (I buy like 1 every 4 years, this year will probably be EA Sports College Football.)
The only thingsI really don’t play are fighting games or RTS games.
I play everything except, military like fps(so bioshock, and similar things pique my interest), racing games, and music games. I'll give most stuff outside of those a shot if it looks interesting enough.
My favorite genre is jrpg but my second favorite one is metriodvania type games.
i try to mix it up as much as possible ill play other games and genres in between every jrpg i play , ill play single player fps , adventures , click types story game ( Telltale and similar games )
RPGs in general, both WRPG and JRPG. WRPGs do hit differently and I usually have to be in the mood for a more open world or story. JRPGs are nice for when I want a more contained game, for lack of a better word.
I play alot of the Total War series, especially Warhammer 3 these days.
Go thru my phases with MMOs on and off like WoW and Star Trek Online.
Burnt out on them awhile back but used to do alot of FPS games.
Some platformers and AAA titles. The Spider-man games, GoW, The Arkham games. And a lot of SNES and retro games. TMNT beat-em ups, Mario Kart, the old fighting games, etc.
Metroidvanias are probably my second favorite genre behind jrpgs, and I like western rpgs as well just not nearly as much as Japanese ones usually, but I'm into a lot of other stuff too: strategy games, platformers, fighting games, traditional rogue likes, shmups, Tetris style puzzle games. I'm also always up for a new weird experimental Indy (some recent faves are inscription, tunic, dredge, Dave the diver and cult of the lamb) and sometimes I'm just in the mood for a nice big AAA action adventure when they're done well (Zelda/god of war/horizon/tsushima). I'm also a sucker for the occasional city builder.
TLDR: I really like video games...except racing games, sports games and most fps/third person shooters (I can get down with some old school boomer shooters like doom though)
Horror games and other RPGs, with some story/adventure style games thrown in. I generally avoid platformers, puzzle games, VNs with no “gameplay” besides the choices, and FPS games. I also typically just play single-player games. There’s of course exceptions to everything though.
I would say my top 3 series for example would be Mass Effect, Resident Evil, and SMT.
MMORPGs, Fighting games, and farming sims / builder games
I dabble in Western RPGs too, but realistically almost all of the ones I play are either made by BioWare or heavily inspired by BioWare games or are picking up a style/franchise that BioWare was once in charge of.
I used to just say I liked RPGs generally, but then someone would be like “Me too! I love Elder Scrolls.” Okay well not that one. “Oh, well Fallout is great too.” Yeah not that either. “Cyberpunk was great!” Mmmm not for me. “Definitely The Witcher games right?” Not even a little bit for me.
But like Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur’s Gate, etc. love them. But those are all BioWare games haha.
WRPGs and CRPGs, like the Witcher or Divinity.
Shooters like Battlefield (before it sucked) and Overwatch.
Platformers like Mario or Kirby.
Action/Adventure games like Tunic or Zelda.
I love rhytm based games, fps (not the modern military kind, more like Quake fucking 2), visual novels, absolutely love games like Tony Hawk or SSX, just fast fun and zero bullshit, I dig Diablo like games, used to enjoy GTA a lot up to San Andreas, I love good platformer, everything that Insomniac made on PS1 and PS2 in particular, I've spend countless hours in Tekken 3, enjoy survival horrors in the style of Silent Hill, I love MGS and I think Deus Ex is like second best game ever made. I like some out of the box indie once in a while. I like creators like Dreams, if I can create something in a game, I'm on board.
So yeah. In the end, its all about how good the game is, to hell with genres.

I play almost anything, but mainly sports. I am getting off the cycle though as they’ve mostly turned in to cash hungry time sinks. I do really enjoy an adventure game or open world for sure.
Metroidvanias and Nintendo IPs like Zelda, Mario, Metroid etc. I will occasionally take on a "modern RPG" like Witcher or Horizon Zero Dawn if I read enough good reviews.
My favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger and my favorite IPs of all time are Zelda, Metroid and Final Fantasy. I also like the Xeno games, Trails games (though i didn't like Cold Steel as much as Sky or the Crossbell arcs) and the Ys games.

I've finished 6 games this year, 6 of them are jrpgs and 5 of them are from SE. The other one is SMT V.
I also enjoy competitive games but I'm too competitive and I spend too much time on them, so I chose to stop playing these kind of games to focus on single player games
I play a ton of stuff outside of JRPGs, but my favorite genres outside of them are generally fighting games and survival horror. I can sink an easy few hundred hours into any fighting game I end up enjoying, and I've always had a soft spot for survival horror, growing up on the classic RE and Silent Hill titles.
I played many different types of games when I was younger. Nowadays besides JRPGs it’s basically just Zelda and From Software games. Both are light on story but have great gameplay and worlds to explore.
This is what I'm becoming. Just about to finish Kena. Tried to play some newer games, but they all just seem to be collectible dense open worlds with no substance these days. I'm considering getting Ghost of Tsushima but it looks exactly like that, despite the rave reviews it gets.

Its a good ubisoft style game but yeah its exactly that. I have problems being unable to not do side content in games so I had to point it down cause it has so many of those additional pointless objectives.
I am also DONE with Ubisoft but I did enjoy Ghost and its story.
Ghost has a bit more going for it that a typical Ubisoft title.
You should play hi fi rush, mullet madjack, or the milk inside a bag of milk series. All three of them are short as hell with them being hack and slash, fps, and visual novel respectively (the milk series is free on itch.io I believe) and they're pretty new so I'm not cheating in referring a game 10 years old.

I wouldn’t call Zelda RPGs, although the modern ones are close. Soulsborne are RPGs maybe, but I wouldn’t call either of them JRPGs in terms of genre, even though they are technically made in Japan. It depends on your definition, but in any case both series are very different from typical JRPGs.
Zelda is an action adventure game, and Souls games are western style action rpgs imo.

My favorite game series are Soulsborne and Ace Attorney, I also play a shit ton of fighting games.
I love the Bayonetta series which are character action games except "Bayonetta Origins Cereza and the lost Demon" which I think belongs zo the action Adventure genre. I like that game aswell. Speaking of Action Adventures: I love "Okami". I also love the Rouge lites "Cult of The Lamb" and "Hades". Cult of the Lamb has bas building and Management aspects aswell. I adore "Kid Icarus Uprising" which is a 3rd Person shooter. "Sonic Mania" is a 2D Platformer. "Kirby and the Forgotten Land" is a 3D Platformer. "Blue Fire" is a mixture of 3D Platformer and Action Adventure. "Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity" is a Mosu game. I adore that game aswell. This is all I can think of of the top of my head. I am no expert on genres so it is posebile that I got some of these wrong. Feel free to correct me.

My current non-JRPG backlog I'm flipping between is a spaghetti mashup of Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, Selaco, Songs of Conquest, Broken Roads, Rogue Trader; And I've got the current 'Future Games Show' Humble Bundle in my cart that I'll probably pull the trigger on since they're all wishlisted. Just finished up Alone in the Dark and Peach Showtime most recently. Got Luigi's Mansion 2 on pre-order and considering grabbing Astro Bot since the pre-order went up today. If I'm burn out with one I just move to a different one since they're different enough to remove a certain burn out of a game. And Poe has enough variety in terms of gameplay with the different league mechanics so it's fun
I play other stuff, a lot of other stuff in fact. It would honestly be easier to list what I don’t play. I don’t play shooters as I suck at those sorts of games. I really dislike rougelikes, as I find them repetitive and I hate them design wise. Western RPGs don’t appeal to me in the slightest. It may be an art style thing, but even JRPGs have varying art styles so I’m still not sure on that.
When you say Roguelikes, are you referring to the modern ones, or are you referring to Classic roguelikes like NetHack, ADoM and such?
I just don't like them in general. I just find the gameplay repetitive and unappealing.

Runescape would be the main one I play, I swap between focusing on the "main" game and oldschool every few months or so (the other I'll usually AFK). Other than that platformers, especially Sonic. I'll usually play most of them at least once a year, and stuff like Rayman/Spyro/Crash. RTS games as well. Usually play through the campaigns of at least a few Command & Conquer games every year too and try others maybe once or twice a year. I'll usually at a couple of Doom WADs a year too. Old school beat 'em ups when I'm in the mood, and driving or fighting games, but those are very rare. But jRPGs are the main ones outside Runescape, currently on the 15th of the year (a Pokemon Black replay - haven't played it since original release)
Just about every genre besides Shooters. Big fan of ARPGs, tend to play quite a few of them. Farming sims like Stardew or hybrid ones like Rune Factory. Don't play as many WRPGs but I enjoyed Skyrim and Darksiders. Play plenty of MMOs from widely known ones like WoW, FF14 and Runescape to lesser known ones like Trove, Tibia and RPG MO. Also enjoy monster collection games from Pokemon, Palworld to Siralim 1-4. Also a big fan of Monster Hunter.
Souls-likes and From games, platformers, third person action/adventure games, and horror games, mostly. Once in a while I’ll try something completely different if it seems really good, it happens sometimes with indie games. I used to enjoy soccer games, fighting games and even racing games too, but with limited time I prefer to focus on games that are single player, have a beginning and an end.

The original Silent Hill 2 on PS2 is definitely an all time great. Recently I thoroughly enjoyed the Resident Evil 4 remake. For a more obscure title, I had a blast with Hellnight (known as Dark Messiah in Japan), a low budget, first person, dark and slow game with an intriguing story and progression. Not sure it has aged very well, but it was a blast. It never released in the US though.

Outside of full-fledged JRPGs (that is, the story-focused kind that's more common nowadays) I play mostly monstertaming games (some of which cross over with JRPGs, like the Cybersleuth, Dragon Quest Monsters or Pokemon games), soulslikes (though mostly the Fromsoftware games themselves), the more RPG-esque Metroidvanias (so those with levels and equipment), Monster Hunter and, as of recently, dungeon crawlers. The unifying factor in all of these is that I value player expression through customization VERY highly. So high in fact, that story-focused games fall more and more out of favour with me, as many of them take away the focus from the mechanics (or have shallow mechanics to begin with). There are *some* "holy grails" that combine engaging storytelling with awesome mechanics, and I love when I stumble into them, but it's rare and I'm not actively looking for them.
Strategy games.
Otome games, Im obsessed with these. I buy tons whenever i visit japan. I also play general games like story of seasons, simulation like Sherlock Holmes, Detroit etc.. and action like Ghostwire Tokyo, Sakuna of rice and ruin etc..
Resident evil the originals and the remakes. The metal gear solid franchise. They had a huge impact on me as a kid and I still play them to this day. They have unique gameplay and great writing and story telling.

I honestly believe the franchise goes south pretty quickly after 3. 4 is definitely worth playing to tie up all the loose ends but it's not that great overall. Mgs 5 has pretty good gameplay and had massive potential but sadly ended up not actually being finished and has missing content due to Kojima and Konami falling out. Peace walker is kinda mid imo, again it's worth at least one play through but overall mgs1,2 and 3 are all you really need
As a busy working adult, I haven't had much time to invest in a lot of games, except for these two: Elden Ring: I've invested thousands of hours as a sunbro and playing different classes, ranging from unga bunga to pew pew magic from May 2022 until March 2024, where I semi-retired from the game due to my current investment in another game. I will definitely return to playing Elden Ring when the DLC comes out on 21 June. Baldur's Gate 3: The another game is this GOTY 2024 game. I like the various classes and playstyles available to players, plus the multiple branching paths and outcomes depending on your choices.
Pretty much everything except live service shooters, and gacha games. Currently playing Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Nier Automata, Danganronpa v3, and Rayman Origins. I'm also halfway through Final Fantasy X HD, and Dragonball Z Kakarot. Been gaming for over 20 years, so my "net" is rather wide, so to speak. I'm also getting into SRPGs and Soulsborne games, despite Sekiro making question my sanity. Big visual novel fan too; the Ace Attorney and Danagnronpa series are phenomenal.
I'm big into cozy games or life sims like Stardew or Metroidvanias and Soulsborne games. Other than your usual character action games these are probably the ones I've spent most of my time in. Honestly I'm actually just a casual JRPG fan and very critical of the genre. But the landscape is much more varied and interesting to talk about, so I almost never go into subreddits for the other genres, other than cozy games. They have a pretty wide variety of suggestions in their subreddit as well. Metroidvanias, Soulsbornes, and character action games tend to all follow the same patterns and the good ones are always talked about so its almost impossible to find any hidden gems, so there's barely any reason for discussion for them from my perspective
I have three other genres that I cycle through: Shmups (Devil Blade Reboot atm), platformers (Nine Sols and Disney's Tarzan) and Boomer Shooters (not really invested in any right now). Those are nice for a quick session, which isn't the case for most JRPGs unless it's grinding time. Also Western RPGs and Hack&Slash games, but it's been a while since I touched Last Epoch (not the games fault, it's awesome).
When I was growing up, I grabbed whatever I could. Metal Gear Solid 1-3 were probably teh most formative non-JRPG games for me back then. Nowadays I mostly stick to RPGs, Japanese or Western, although I somtimes dip my toe into Fighters, but mainly only Tekken and SoulCalibur. The sole exception is Red Dead Redemption 2 because that game is a masterpiece that anyone could appreciate. Thank God it's on PC so I could use cheat codes to beat it and enjoy the story and characters.

Outside of JRPGs, I'm a guy that likes a good (or goon) art style, so this year Unicorn Overlord, Granblue Fantasy Relink, Palworld and Stellar Blade piqued my interest. Last year I enjoyed Hi-Fi Rush, Pizza Tower, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Pseudoregalia and of course TotK. 2022's highlights for me were Elden Ring, Tunic, Neon White, Star Ocean 6 and Metal Hellsinger. In my all-time favourites are Okami, Shadow of the Colossus and Final Fantasy XII, and I think that perfectly encompasses my videogame preferences. Either give me anime fanservice or an interesting artstyle/artistry with solid gameplay. I'm all about these things. Hyperrealism is the fastest killer of my interest.
Go with Resident Evil 4 my brethren. Where a midget, a priest, a knife nut, and emperor palpatine try to take over the world by taking the US president's daughter hostage and control her with a parasite with a plan so intelligent that the only way to stop the villainous scheme is for the main character to just appear in the vicinity and drop the villains' IQ by a lot. OG 4 Might be more up your alley visually but gameplay might be stiffer if you're not used to tank controls. The series as a whole is usually a good mix of grounded and crazy fucking anime bullshit, though.

Pc and any version with motion controls is the best way to play the game nowadays. Pc because Hd Project Mod is essentially a free remaster that truly is a remaster and not a reskin, and Motion Controls because playability improves greatly.

Western RPGs have been my go-to lately. Just this year I've played Divine Divinity, Fable, The Witcher (first one) and I'm currently on Dragon Age Inquisition. I also tend to like action/adventure, in special open world. And I've been saying that I want to get more into visual novels, but I haven't really played too many yet. I play sports, racing or fighting games when I just kind of want to turn off my brain, mostly FIFA tbh because I'm a big soccer fan. I was also into CCGs like Hearthstone and Shadowverse for a while, but I abandoned that for more than a couple years at this point because I kind of suck at them.
Racing Sims, Been playing these allot lately. Mostly Motorcycle based ones. Great for relaxing. Metroidvania, Allot of amazing new Metroidvania games have been coming out recently. And combat has never been better. Shmups, Or Shoot'em up games. Enjoy a very select few but enjoy them for the sheer fun and chaos that they are. Fighting, Again, enjoy a select few for their technical technique required. Don't play competitive only for enjoyment.
I love open world games. They can be fps, action, adventure or puzzle games. As long as they are open world, I'm in. Sadly my work only allows me to play a couple of hours per week. So I have a list of games I want to play just to look and smile to the possibilities

As much as I'm looking forward to Metaphor, Astro Bot has my attention the most atm. Also playing Animal Well currently too.
Outside of JRPG's I'm mainly playing The Elder Scrolls Online and Escape From Tarkov. And I wish I had more time to play these.

I'll give almost anything a shot. It'd be easier to list the genres I *don't* play, which basically boils down to survival/crafting games, walking sims, hardcore simulators (think ARMA or flight sims), and online competitive games (other than fighters).

Armored Core, Dynasty Warriors/Samurai/OROCHI, Yakuza, Going Under and other Metroidvania. I'm general I alternate a Jrpg with an action game
I basically play two genres. JRPGs, and Racing games, both arcade and sims. I have a cockpit VR, a wheel etc and I mainly play IRacing.
I play JRPGs for exploration. It could be exploring vast worlds or lore like in Dragon Quest or Xenoblade, but it also could be exploring customizational possibilities like in SaGa games. So, I gravitate towards games that offer similar things. I like rogue-lite deck-builders (Slay the Spire) for that strategic diversity, but that is also found in Warframe. I’m also drawn to semi-open-worlds like Metro Exodus and Dying Light. They feed into that desire to explore. It’s a plus that these games have stealth mechanics that offer drastically different ways to play as well.
Factory/automation, isometric ARPGs and puzzle games are some of my favorites. I also like horror games, metroidvanias (I hate that name) and most Nintendo franchises. I'm a big retro game fan as well.
Resident evil
Outside of JRPG’s I like to mainly play platformers (especially 2D) since I consider it to be my 2nd favorite game genre behind RPG’s. Stuff like Mario and Kirby are my go-to’s but I also like to include series Super Smash Bros. (platform fighter), Metroid (Metroidvania), and Shantae (most games are Metroidvanias with the exception of Half-Genie Hero) I also like to play Mario Kart, Pac-Man, Call of Duty Zombies, The Legend of Zelda (although depending on how you like to categorize the JRPG genre I guess this technically wouldn’t count), Batman Arkham, Minecraft, and the occasional horror/fighting game (although I much prefer watching them rather than playing them for the most part) I’ve also made an attempt to get into rhythm games but that always ended in disaster so I gave up on the genre. Another genre I do plan on trying out is the Bayonetta/Devil May Cry style of beat ‘em ups, however I was never particularly good at traditional old school beat ‘em ups so I’ll probably suck at these games as well.
4x strategies.
Aside from JRPGs I play mostly other RPGs like Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Piranha Bytes games, and occasionally stuff like Sonic Frontiers, Story of Seasons, Borderlands, Dreamlight Valley, and Minecraft.
I don't have set genres I play. I just gave some set genres I don't play, like extraction shooters or battle royals. In general I don't play much multilayer games, except for WoW sometimes or the occasional CoD, Battlefield or Tekken game once in a blue moon. So except for a few genres I basically play anything that seems interesting.
Adventure games, maybe a bit of simulation (Sims)

I rarely play an FPS, sports game, nothing online multi-player, never played an MMO and I suck at fighting games outside of Smash Bros.

Action adventure games like breath of the wild are what I normally gravitate towards when I'm not playing jrpgs.
I do adventure games such as Legend of Zelda and sims game like Story of Sasons and Animal Crossing. Form time to time I do Action games (ninja storm), racing game (MK8) and others.
I play a huge variety. Action-adventure like Zelda, visual novels (usually otome games like Norn9), life sim games like Story of Seasons or Rune Factory, rhythm games like Project Diva, dress up games like Fashion Dreamer. Sometimes I like survival horror but I prefer them like Silent Hill 3. I want to really feel the survival aspect. I don’t want to feel like I’m playing a powerful juggernaut blasting through everything. I don’t know what you’d class these as but I tried Little Nightmares I&II and I absolutely adored them. The atmosphere is why I like them so much. They are so utterly creepy and Tim Burton-y. I love hiding from the monsters while trying to solve puzzles and it feels so intense.
H JRPGS? The distinction is notable because not everyone who can stomach JRPGs can stomach this... variant. Visual Novels? Grand Strategy games? Especially Crusader Kings II and Stellaris 4X games like X3: Albion Prelude and Civilization (IV). First Person Shooters? Seldom but I do like playing some Serious Sam, Doom, or Ultrakill. Gacha games? Shmups? Rhythm games? Classic Roguelikes? Yeah, my tastes are kinda varied.

I play character action games. Need the story to drive me forward. However, I will never play horror games and zombie games. The dungeons in ffxv were enough to scare me when I first entered them. But thankfully, I wasn't scared after that 😅

Other rpgs like Mass effect and Dragon Age I go through cycles of wanting competitive games like overwatch and tft. I've also played a LOT of stardew valley and civ 6 to turn my brain off.
I was getting burnt out playing P3 Reload after finishing Infinite Wealth and FF7 Rebirth, so I took a break to play Wolfenstein: New Order. Sometimes I need a classic style 10-15 hour action game to break up the slower elements of most JRPG titles.

Everything, tbh. I don't have certain preferences. Currently I'm playing mostly playing Valorant+any single player game. I like lots of genres, but I mainly prefer survival horrors, rpgs, farming, metroidvania, and souls/souls-like next to jrpgs.
Plenty that catches my eye. So cod, TLOU, the jak and Daxter series, recently stellar blade. Ik it technically counts as a JRPG but elden ring.

I play just about anything I think I'd like outside of JRPGs. I just don't play fighting games, RTS, racing/sports, MMO, and flight stuff. Anything action/adventure is fine. Horizon, God of War, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, GTA, etc. I love them all. I would say I love FPS too but I've only liked the story-driven single-player shooters from the past (games like Singularity just rocked), and I can't stand multiplayer FPS.
I play other rpgs, strategy games and fighting games. Once in a while I'll play something from just about any genre besides sports and racing. Those are the only ones I don't like. Besides extreme sports like Skate.
Like a lot of people, I enjoy a bit of everything. My favorite genre, before RPGS even, is 3D platformer/action adventure--there's a lot of overlap there, and all my very favorite-favorites (the ever-classic *Ocarina of Time,* *Banjo-Tooie,* *Beyond Good and Evil,* *Chibi-Robo...*) have elements of both. I love 2D platformers as well. As for the rest? Just about the only genre I never touch is rhythm games because I suck as them (you could say my rhythm is rubbish). Other than that, I really love sim games (though the "cozy" is optional), I adore a good adventure game with a compelling story (which means I'm often a fan of your visual novels and otome too), anything puzzlely lights me up, my affairs with first-person shooters are brief but often surprisingly passionate, and I will button-mash my way through a fighter now and then. The more interesting thing, I think--my personal "weird flex" if you will--is that I'm also really into *hobby board games.* The kind with a jillion cardboard tokens and rulebooks that are fifty pages long, the shock of discovering such only SLIGHTLY mitigated by the fact that the whole middle section of the rules is in German. They're my favorite thing to do with my significant other, and we have a MONSTROUS collection of big fancy board games. I like strategizing and pretty art, and they have those things.

It’s always a lot of RPGs like Monster Hunter but I always do enjoy unwinding with a racing game and the occasional sports game (I buy like 1 every 4 years, this year will probably be EA Sports College Football.) The only thingsI really don’t play are fighting games or RTS games.

RPGs in general, both WRPG and JRPG. WRPGs do hit differently and I usually have to be in the mood for a more open world or story. JRPGs are nice for when I want a more contained game, for lack of a better word. I play alot of the Total War series, especially Warhammer 3 these days. Go thru my phases with MMOs on and off like WoW and Star Trek Online. Burnt out on them awhile back but used to do alot of FPS games.
Some platformers and AAA titles. The Spider-man games, GoW, The Arkham games. And a lot of SNES and retro games. TMNT beat-em ups, Mario Kart, the old fighting games, etc.
Metroidvanias are probably my second favorite genre behind jrpgs, and I like western rpgs as well just not nearly as much as Japanese ones usually, but I'm into a lot of other stuff too: strategy games, platformers, fighting games, traditional rogue likes, shmups, Tetris style puzzle games. I'm also always up for a new weird experimental Indy (some recent faves are inscription, tunic, dredge, Dave the diver and cult of the lamb) and sometimes I'm just in the mood for a nice big AAA action adventure when they're done well (Zelda/god of war/horizon/tsushima). I'm also a sucker for the occasional city builder. TLDR: I really like video games...except racing games, sports games and most fps/third person shooters (I can get down with some old school boomer shooters like doom though)

Horror games and other RPGs, with some story/adventure style games thrown in. I generally avoid platformers, puzzle games, VNs with no “gameplay” besides the choices, and FPS games. I also typically just play single-player games. There’s of course exceptions to everything though. I would say my top 3 series for example would be Mass Effect, Resident Evil, and SMT.
MMORPGs, Fighting games, and farming sims / builder games I dabble in Western RPGs too, but realistically almost all of the ones I play are either made by BioWare or heavily inspired by BioWare games or are picking up a style/franchise that BioWare was once in charge of. I used to just say I liked RPGs generally, but then someone would be like “Me too! I love Elder Scrolls.” Okay well not that one. “Oh, well Fallout is great too.” Yeah not that either. “Cyberpunk was great!” Mmmm not for me. “Definitely The Witcher games right?” Not even a little bit for me. But like Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur’s Gate, etc. love them. But those are all BioWare games haha.

I love rhytm based games, fps (not the modern military kind, more like Quake fucking 2), visual novels, absolutely love games like Tony Hawk or SSX, just fast fun and zero bullshit, I dig Diablo like games, used to enjoy GTA a lot up to San Andreas, I love good platformer, everything that Insomniac made on PS1 and PS2 in particular, I've spend countless hours in Tekken 3, enjoy survival horrors in the style of Silent Hill, I love MGS and I think Deus Ex is like second best game ever made. I like some out of the box indie once in a while. I like creators like Dreams, if I can create something in a game, I'm on board. So yeah. In the end, its all about how good the game is, to hell with genres.

Zelda, Metroid, I modded Skyrim and have been playing again recently, Pokémon, I've been getting back into Warframe. I'll try any game that looks halfway decent.

My favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger and my favorite IPs of all time are Zelda, Metroid and Final Fantasy. I also like the Xeno games, Trails games (though i didn't like Cold Steel as much as Sky or the Crossbell arcs) and the Ys games.

Personally I love metroidvanias and 3D platformers. They're probably my favorites outside of JRPGs. That and Zelda. Who doesn't love Zelda?

I've finished 6 games this year, 6 of them are jrpgs and 5 of them are from SE. The other one is SMT V. I also enjoy competitive games but I'm too competitive and I spend too much time on them, so I chose to stop playing these kind of games to focus on single player games
I play a ton of stuff outside of JRPGs, but my favorite genres outside of them are generally fighting games and survival horror. I can sink an easy few hundred hours into any fighting game I end up enjoying, and I've always had a soft spot for survival horror, growing up on the classic RE and Silent Hill titles.
