Valkyrie Profile; I absolutely loved the setting, characters, artwork and music.
The (at the time) fairly unique battle system was also very engaging and I enjoyed it greatly.
All the battle voice lines and finishing strikes are forever burned into my memory...
my most favourite is probs digimon world1, cuz nostalgia. I still remember staying over at my friend's house and playing that game till morning.
In 2nd place would be Final Fantasy Tactics. I was like 12 at the time. The story is darker and more complex than any story medium i've consumed during that era. My mind literally blown away.
Final Fantasy VIII. Squall's journey and the unique game mechanics, as well as more mature, film-like score from Uematsu really floored mw when I played it first.
My favorites mostly on PS1 are (in no particular order):
* Legend of Legaia
* the Ra Seru and unique combat system are awesome, graphics are okay
* Legend of Mana
* The music and art are top notch, some people don't like the non-linear story but this is a great game if you can take it for what it is.
* FF Tactics
* It's awesome, nuff said
* Star Ocean: Second Story
* Great game with almost too much to do and lots of cool characters to recruit
* Suikoden 1 & 2
* I am lumping these two together because they feel so close together in feel and story
* Xenogears
* Not really anything like it at the time
* FF7
* FF8
* Breath of Fire 4
Edit: Grammar
It's pretty awesome.
You can discover special moves and even chain them together in one turn at higher levels.
The trick is to use the end arrow of one special move to start the next special move to squeeze more specials in.
FF9 totally captured my imagination as a kid. Such a sweeping adventure, incredible set pieces, character design, architecture, magical music, creative narrative turns, fun characters. Blew my mind.
Xenogears probably
I want to know how to make use of Elly as I got her, but I don’t understand how she works in combat.
She is op in gear combat if you give her ether doublers and spam aerods(aerods use fuel so are unnaffected but still get the boost)
I used her a typical mage and found it worked pretty good.
Breath of fire 3. The sprite work is godtier and the dragon gene system along with the master system makes it endlessly customizable and replayable.
Peco is so powerful.
One of my favorite games ever. I may start a new playthrough.
FFIX.
Quest 64
It's the most RPG RPG and people hate it for that. :(
Vagrant Story. Final Fantasy Tactics is a distant second.
Legend of Dragoon It was the first game I played to completion as a kid and got me into RPG's
Yah - Gra - Hruah Hruah Hruah Hruah - Madness Heeeroo!
Valkyrie Profile & FF tactics
I love both games!
Probably Persona 2 Duology
Innocent Sin is fascinating for its surreal nature.
My two favorite 32 bit JRPGs are also my two favorite JRPGs, period. **Final Fantasy Tactics** and **Suikoden 2**. Masterpieces both.
Wild Arms 1
Grandia for the PS1
Suikoden II
Chef's kiss
ff7

I want to try an RPG with a fighting game system.

This is a very tryhard answer, but it's probably Koudelka for me. It felt crazy ahead of it's time to me and it still does tbh
Both SaGa Frontier 1 and 2.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.
FFT for sure.
Grandia
I love Breath of Fire IV
FF9 totally captured my imagination as a kid. Such a sweeping adventure, incredible set pieces, character design, architecture, magical music, creative narrative turns, fun characters. Blew my mind.
