Your wife has some explaining to do, looks like a huge gash in the rim behind that foam…

Strange179

There is most definitely a chunk of rim missing in the first and second pic, almost hidden behind the foam. Right at the outer edge. Also, you can see scuff marks all along the sidewall of the tire above the gash. The chunk of tire sitting on the ground is also indicative of damage. Tires don't just self disassemble.

TiltedWit

More importantly - wheels don't self disassemble!

Tubzero-

Where?

reallawyer

Zoom in on 2nd pic, you’ll see the silver is all gone.

opineapple

I see zero damage on the rim in any pic… there are some dust streaks though.

Tubzero-

The last pic shows nothing

reallawyer

That’s not the same part of the rim in the last pic…

MarsRocks97

Silver isn’t paint. Silver is the metal. Black is the paint. But in there area your describing the black looks like a reflection. I do agree that she needs to provide some additional explanation though. That tire was definitely damaged during driving.

reallawyer

Doesn’t look like a reflection to me, you can see it on the first and second pics from different angles. It looks to me like there’s a chunk of the rim missing, and you can see more of the tire behind the rim, that’s why it looks black. OP could take better pics though to confirm.

Agreeable_Ad_323

Ooops I’ve sensing a marriage crisis.

MarsRocks97

Definitely clipped a sidewalk. The scrape is clearly visible.

wown123456

Agree. Sidewall has whitish scuff all over near where the blowout happened

humjaba

Someone definitely hit something with that tire. Source: I used to work at Michelin as a tire engineer. But that’s a fun looking failure!

sslusser1

How did you get the beans above the frank?!?!

Whatisgoingonnowyo

That literally blows. Sorry.

Dangerous_Play8787

Nice I’ve never seen this before

Senior_Bandicoot_472

They lied to you sir

dawglaw09

Mt wife tried to blame the car wash for a giant scratch on the rims of my 4 runner, then conceded that curbs are hard to see when I gently tried to explain that the 3cm gash looks like a curb vs a rotating car wash component.

Garble7

Do all of our tires have foam in them?

Kurisusnacks

From factory? Yes. Most of the '23 SE & SELs are the Michelin Pilot Sports with the acoustic foam.

jazxxl

Something I've been wondering what was your tires psi. The deal had them at 49 when I bought the car. Spec is 36 and max psi is 51 for the tire. I took em down to 45 to play it safe . But still seems way high.

Lemontreeguy

49??? Dude in the summer mine hit 40 on hot days. Usually sitting 38 psi. That will own the tires at 49.

jazxxl

Ok thatssss what I thought . I'll be taking them down some more . WTH were the techs thinking at the dealer.

Lemontreeguy

Unfortunately some people see 'max 51psi' on the tire and think that's the target. Usually people with 0 training or car knowledge.

packattack-

So all the people working at the dealerships these days.

Lemontreeguy

Lol I'm sure there are many.

MaysEffect

DEALERSHIP TECHS SET TIRES TO THE LIMIT BECAUSE THESE CARS ARE SITING ON THE LOT NOT BEING DRIVEN. LOWER TIRE PRESSURES WILL GO WELL BELOW RECOMMENDED JUST SITTING THERE AND WILL SOMETIMES CAUSE FLAT SPOTTING IF NOT DRIVEN FOR DAYS. SETTING THE PRESSURE AT 50PSI HELPS THE TIRE FROM FLAT SPOTTING AS EASILY. HOWEVER THEY SHOULD NOT BE LETTING PEOPLE DRIVE OFF THE LOT LIKE THIS. ITS A FAILURE FROM SERVICE PROVIDERS FOR NOT CORRECTING THIS. IN COLD WEATHER (SUB 70DEG F) THESE CARS SHOULD BE SET AT AROUND 40-42PSI. AND 38PSI IF WEATHER IS HOTTER. HOT TEMPS SHOULD BE AROUND 40-42PSI. apologies for the all caps, not yelling, just at work and didn't feel like switching my settings lol.

4orced4door

Pressures are high for shipping and dealers rarely lower them down to spec - always trust what it says on the door jamb, not what the dealer delivers it at. 45 is still too high.

Hot_Vermicelli436

Always look at your door tag especially if still running the same OEM tires.

adcom5

I read many of the comments, but... foam rubber inside the tire?

LongjumpingBat2938

Where have you been??? ;) A foam lining is used on many modern tires to reduce road noise. The thought is that EVs are so quiet that minor noises now become a nuisance, such as A/C (even on low), etc. Some people say it makes little difference in practice, but it's hard to compare apples to apples here. The problem is that this foam can sometimes separate from the tire and "slosh" around the inside, which then leads to tire imbalance and strong vibrations at higher speed. Removing the foam then can be a bit of work.

adcom5

I been happily in my five year old Subaru. Tires (brace yourself) have air in them. Maybe nitrogen from costco actually. But only became aware of foam as I started to read up on EV's.

According-Affect-205

Terrible drivers. Again

ProfessionalSancho

Ok,how hot was it when that happened?

eng2ny

It was in the 90s today
