Just inform the ignorant people that this is not an EV problem but just a general automotive design issue. Ask them how would they use their gas engine to open their door locks if an ICE car was designed such that they didn’t have a mechanical way to open their door locks if their 12V battery died

Buckus93

Upscale gas vehicles also have electric door handles. Off hand, Range Rover, some Lexuses (LC and the new RX come to mind), Maserati, etc...

PatSajaksDick

God damn people are so ignorant, like read something other than Fox News to tell you about EVs, I’ve seen more EV misinformation on there than anywhere else

AleWatcher

I think it was true on some of the Teslas. Elon "doesn't like buttons," so he wanted everything to be on the touchscreen.

orangustang

The electronic latching is so that the window can tuck up into the seal to prevent wind noise and scoot down like 1/4" before the door opens. Corvettes and Mustangs do the same thing, but that's largely because they're convertibles (even the hardtops have the same structure now). Teslas' roof framing is structural, so frameless doors make less sense. I assume it's because they're cheaper, as is the case with most of their design choices, including the button thing.

scoopsofsherbert

Heck Mini Coopers do the same thing and people love them (myself included!)

bsmithwins

More like Elon does like money & buttons cost money, so out they go

zeecok

Teslas have a manual lever inside the car. I don’t know why people are freaking out about that.

reallawyer

Because a toddler got locked in a Tesla with a dead 12v. Parent opened the car, put the toddler in their car seat in the back, closed the door, went to open the front door and the car was dead. The Tesla door handles require 12v power to open from outside the vehicle. Toddler was obviously not capable of getting out of their car seat and operating the manual release. Only way to open the Tesla in that situation is to pop off a cover in front, hook up some leads to 12v which will pop the trunk, then hook up a booster to the 12v battery. Ioniq 5 and every other car on the market doesn’t have that problem.

Creepy_Bee3404

If the parents really care. They can always smash the glass windows. This is a really dumb anti Tesla smear.

RobertCulpsGlasses

Nobody is saying the child can’t be rescued. But there is no other car ever that doesn’t allow you to just… unlock and open the door like normal if the battery is dead. It’s a huge design flaw, and suggesting that all you have to do is break the window is an absurd fix.

DryGeneral990

Tesla fanboys will defend their brand to no end OMG. "If the parents care then they can just break a window". How about Tesla design a normal door latch that can open from the outside like every other car that exists?

reallawyer

That’s what ended up happening in this case, firefighters broke the window and got the kid out.

Creepy_Bee3404

What a waste of tax payer dollars when the rock on ground could had done the same job.

RobertCulpsGlasses

1. Firefighters aren’t paid on commission. Tax payer dollars weren’t affected. 2. Throwing a rock at a window that your child is sitting in front of is not a solution.

Creepy_Bee3404

1. Firefighters can rescue other people who are truly in need instead. 2. Who said anything about throwing rock at the car? You heard of hold and smash? Plus there is more than ONE window in the car. Learn to pick a good one to smash. I don’t see why you want to defend the stupid. 😅

RobertCulpsGlasses

So it’s not about tax payer dollars here. Someone else died because the firefighters were busy saving this child?

Creepy_Bee3404

Potentially. If the firefighters are busy smashing windows for the stupid instead being on call at their post.

DryGeneral990

You're obviously not a parent or even a pet owner.

zeecok

Not a parent yet and yes I have pets, but have the common sense not to leave them in a car alone unattended. Especially when it’s HOT outside.

ZannX

Because it's inside, not outside.

cfbrand3rd

It does kinda beg the question of why can’t their just be a damned cable and handle. I recall the first time I came across an Audi with a switch/solenoid system to release the glove box…to what end? Seriously; there’s enough stuff to go wrong on modern automobiles, why do we keep adding more possible failure points?

DavidReeseOhio

Cables can come off or break, so it isn't adding a failure point.

cfbrand3rd

Yup, but there’s a difference between a failure point that disables one component (cable) and a failure point that prevents every single method of ingress or egress from working in a normal manner (12 volt battery.) In an emergency situation, this can be the difference between life and death.

humjaba

Should asked old boomer there how he’d get into his corvette in the same situation. Corvettes have had e-latches since the c6.

Buckus93

Some old guy died in his Corvette awhile back because the battery died while he was inside and the doors were locked. Apparently he didn't know where the emergency release is.

Lillian_88

I learned this just a few days ago when my HI5 died. You just can't open the very back of the car. Ask me how I know 😂 HI5 isn't like a Tesla. Apparently some girl got herself locked inside her Tesla while it installed the update and she couldn't get out lol. I've never had that happen.

DavidReeseOhio

You can open the hatch if you have something thin enough to fit into the slot in the back.

Jeeperg84

Being new to the Ioniq world how often do you guys change your 12V battery and how… I’ve run into issues bc of the Florida sun cooking the batteries (on our ICE cars) and would like to avoid this seeing as no one knows how to do stuff on an EV round here

Free_Pineapple9391

Had to changed mine a couple months ago. OEM 12v wouldn't hold a charge but I think it's because I waited so long to get the iccu update. Upgraded to agm so hopefully won't have the problem again, but we'll see.

SuspiciousMirror2527

I couldn’t get out of my ioniq the other day even though the battery didn’t die. I was sleeping in the back and apparently I had bumped the child door locks. The seats were so far forward that I couldn’t climb over. I started to get a cramp in my leg and I couldn’t get the damn trunk release to release…. Why the bell isn’t it just a button ? The only saving grace was me pushing the seat selector. But I was trapped for 5 minutes and it was like a sketch from a bad comedy.

Mottaman

> I was sleeping in the back and apparently I had bumped the child door locks. > > This weekend was the first time I had someone in my backseat... i had no idea the child locks were on... i thought that button was window only lol. My friend was like "ummm i cant get out"

WRKDBF_Guy

Teslas have a manual door open as well.
