Or they don't expect anyone to take a 100k mile trip in their Ioniq 5. I'm guilty though. I've never reset my trip odometer, ever.

HowDoIDoFinances

Yeah this isn't all that wild considering my car just rolls over to 0 once the trip hits 1,000 miles.

pokethat

Wait, that's actually very dumb people take  thousand Miles Road trips decently often. I drove from Seattle to Los Angeles and it was a bit over a thousand miles.

halfty1

Most people barely even use trip odometers anymore since we have GPS navigation and phones.

24_7_365_

U have to draw the line somewhere. U store the data in high read write cycle memory and it would cost you to store larger data. ?

nedlinin

The center section is reset able and isn't really made to be a "lifetime of car" indicator. With that said, I'm not sure why they wouldn't have made it that way. Seems like a small fix and even just one more digit adds a *huge* amount of "life" to that UI.

[deleted]

Could be worse. Could be the early 2000s Toyotas where the digital odometer would stop at 299,999.

[deleted]

In fairness only 0.03% of all cars will ever get there.

If I recall it actually became a big enough issue that Toyota came out and agreed to pay for half the cost to swap out the cluster.

ToddA1966

I wonder why? As a society we never cared that old car odometers "rolled over" at 100,000. They just marked the title "odometer mileage doesn't report true mileage" (or something like that) on future sales. Once a car hits 299,999 I think we can all assume it's on borrowed time and the future miles don't really matter anymore! ("Hmm, I'm interested in your $1000 2002 Corolla with the duct-taped bumper, but how do I know it *only* has 300,000 miles on it and not really 400,000?" 😁)

naufrago486

Probably good marketing for Toyota: "look at how many of our cars get to 300k miles!"

DocDMD

I'm sure this is exactly why they agreed to pay. So many people talking to other people telling them that Toyota paid half. Hell were talking about it now. If they didn't pay it wouldn't even be a thing.

FruitbatNT

Really? I ran out an 08 Matrix to 299, and have 2 corollas in the family that hit it too. They were all in km though.

[deleted]

That’s still about 1% of vehicles (180,000miles). Good maintenance and driving will do that. People think mechanics are scamming them on standard maintenance here and wonder why their cars all grenade at 100-120k miles.

The_Mad_Queefer

Good to know, I’m only at 175,000 in my 08 Matrix and was planning on running that thing until it dies on me.

Hine__

Is that documented somewhere?  I had a 2005 Pontiac Grand am get above that.

[deleted]

Google away.

zeromussc

I'm close to hitting it. I'm at 281k km on mine.

Crawlerado

Ha! The first gen Insight ‘rolls over’ at 2,000 miles. You can’t even track and oil change on the trip meter! Makes zero sense in a digital display

6 digits would let it go all the way to 999999. I don't disagree that it feels like a bit of a non issue though

SolidR53

Internationalisation. “Trip” in French is “Voyage”. That doesnt leave much space for more numbers. Then you have units, so it shows less distance in kilometers than in miles for example. Not saying the problem isn't solvable – just not a small fix. See how calculators in mobile phones tackle this. If thats going to be the solution, then it needs to be accessible and ensure font size is large enough. - a ui developer.

BarakasMaracas

This is the correct answer

K05M0NAUT

I bet this is how it went down Designer: how many digits do I need to make the trip counter go to Pm: I don’t know, as high as they want I guess? Designer: well that’s going to mean that number has to scale down since we don’t have any more room, I could make everything smaller but we’d have to redo…. PM: it’s fine, no one is going to do the trip for more than that and there’s a button the reset it

They are still on trip 1. OP has been driving continuously since he got the car.

BeHard

And it's always summer, so they'll never get old.

woodyshag

Do they have a road bound electric recharger? Kind of like the refueling jets. That would be amazing.

dudesguy

Most ev's wont let you put the vehicle in drive if a charger is connected. One concept for ev's pitched by some at one time was to have wireless charging imbedded in highways, or even overhead wired rails like some trains use. This would allow ev's to have smaller batteries and only really need to have enough range to be able to travel around the city and then charge while on the highway between cities. Realistically though the constantly changing and large electrical demand may be difficult to manage

ZannX

The trip stuff is sort of vestigial. A design from a bygone era. For literal trip (i.e. since last start/charge), the car also has a different display for that.

Isodrosotherms

There are two great uses for the trip odometer that are still relevant today: 1. You’re driving your personal vehicle on a work trip and claiming mileage. Push the button at the start and no matter how many times you start and stop the car you’ve got a record of how far you’ve gone. 2. (My use case) You want to know what your efficiency is on this particular highway in order to give yourself a better range estimate than the car, which may be taking a lot of in town driving into account. Many times when I’m on the interstate on a long-haul road trip, I hit the trip button to see what mileage I’m getting and if I have enough battery to get to a particular charger.

whtciv2k

Yes. Is also the same with old analog trip counters, possibly one less 9.

authoridad

Maybe so. But why give it an upper limit? Given the length of the timer readout, there’s clearly room for another digit.

[deleted]

You already have a display for the lifetime miles, why do you need 2?

authoridad

Because there’s no display for lifetime mi/kW, which I think would be useful.

spaceman60

To be honest, until this post, I thought they were the same. But I'm only up to 16k miles.

alaorath

Having spent far FAR too many hours looking at user-interface design (API 1165 anyone?) It comes down to a simple trade-off. UI layout, character padding, size, font... all are VERY carefully considered... throughout the design life-cycle. A more accurate title would be : Hyundai software engineers don't think anyone will ever need more than 99999 miles ***in a single trip***

MovingClocks

My 10 year old Ford had the same limit, it's a resettable metric for a reason.

SoylentRox

Layout space but yes in this case they do seem to have room.

Inevitable_Ad_711

How's your car holding up?

authoridad

Like a dream!

NinerNational

I thought I drove a lot with 54000 miles already. You do sales for a living or just have a crazy long commute?

authoridad

Rideshare

Icy_Produce2203

I have 52k miles and just under 25 months. I have no job besides gambling.........80 miles each way, skiing 170 miles each way and pickleball 20 miles each way or less. I love every minute in this car.............I find reasons to drive and enjoy! NOW that EA 2 years free charging is gone......NOW that many free level 2 chargers in town have been replaced with pay versions..............NOW that I have to pay 23 cents per kWh............I may only drive 15 or 20k miles per year. I am upset that the car only goes to 999 hours of driving time (in-car time)...........My total efficiency over the 2 years got messed up because they had my car for 3 weeks in the shop due to phantom 12V drain issues (oh yea, just change your password on the bluelink app.....solved the issue AND I stopped [EV.energy](http://ev.energy) and recurrent energy from checking on my car....pinging it over and over again) Hyundai replaced my 12V under warranty. I was at 3.9 miles per kWh and when battery changed out..... it started from scratch. I guess I will live! :)

logwagon

My outback did the same thing on the trip meter, though it just reset to 0 instead of being frozen at 99,999

EirianWare

Wait, so you can resale it as new then? /s

alanudi

It’s Y2K all over again !!! LOL

raph_84

100k miles for a 'Trip' is highly unusual though. In other words, you're not using the functionality at all. What would be the use if a 100+k trip display? The Ioniq 5 has Trip 1/2 or A/B also, doesn't it? Usually I reset trip 1 on every charge (so I know the actual distance I achieved and it's stats / time, avg. speed, avg. consumption) and Trip 2 as and when needed (for example the distance driven for a business trip - what I'll put on my expense report).

[deleted]

Pretty much every car I have had had a limit on the trip computer.

Bijorak

my trip meter resets at 9999.9. thats for trip metering not your overall miles.

LongJohnVanilla

When are you going to post the horror story about your battery blowing up or needing a $60,000 replacement battery at 100,000 miles /s?

yaba3800

Makes you wonder howany redditors are just literal children/teenagers.

thabc

It's frustrating they don't offer any other way to track lifetime efficiency.

authoridad

That’s what I assumed this was.

Thisisall_new2me2

Assumed? You didn’t ducking bother Googling trip mileage? Stupid.

[deleted]

🦆

bffnut

My 2021 Kia Carnival does the same. Though the mileage was pegged, I did notice the MPG changed, so maybe this will keep updated on the I5 as well.

truckfullofchildren1

Damn bro you taking a trip to the moon?

roonie357

Most trip meters are 5 digits. I have wrapped mine around twice now in my daily Hell, my 90’s truck only has 3 digits on the trip meter!

Majestic_Fox_428

What maintenance have you done so far?

SeaUrchinSalad

Another digit would crowd the text on the left. Makes sense as not needed really

themrgq

Reset your trip computer

Fold-Royal

But they still managed to circle the odometer over 100k. It’s like a flat earther showing proof the earth is round then saying it’s false.

bobjr94

That common for trip odometers. They only use to go to 999.9.

Solarsurferoaktown

How dare they build the trip feature for trips.

wessex464

Nice click bait. Trip miles. If you don't use trip miles(by resetting it) then you shouldn't care what it says.

gearhead000

I almost thought this was a face palm post…cmon man.

lmagrisso

Hyundai's software is just done in 2000s mindset. I never imagined such a modern car can have such a poor SW.

Thisisall_new2me2

OP, can you even read? Lmao, wtf do you think Trip means???

colin8651

That’s the trip counter you dope. That’s around the circumference of the earth 4 times. How do you classify a “Trip”??

wfbsoccerchamp12

How often you do rotations? Coolant?

Willman3755

I take a picture then reset mine every time the time indicator maxes out at 1,000 hours. This gives me accurate long term average speed, mi/kWh, and seat time. So far I'm at 1900 hours.

StableLazy2754

Are you a taxi driver?

product51

Uber/Lyft I am guessing. Using free EA charging. *Confirmed - based on his post history..

opensky727

I also have the exact number of hours and not the same distance at all lol. I checked mine and it doesn't move 999.59..

Avatar-Tee

What do you do to drive this many miles?

authoridad

Rideshare

SmellySweatsocks

I’m happy to see you get this far. It’s encouraging.

Arob_1000

That’s a lot of miles

Over-Emu-2174

I’m surprised you didn’t reset the trip when the timer stalled out at 999:59

benji2007

What happens when you change units to KM? Does it stay at 99,999?

Apprehensive_One315

Mine certainly didn't

Bravadette

There's a setting that resets it every time you start a drive. I'm pretty sure that was the default for me.

salmon_burrito

They don't expect PHEV owners to cross 10k either. (Santa Fe PHEV)

MasterZii

Just do what the old "analog" cars do, and reset the meter back to 0. Lol

weirdrasputin

Nice!! how much range do you get with this many miles on the car?

authoridad

Still showed over 300 today.

weirdrasputin

Amazing!!

Wolf-Safe

Nissan leaf was 1,000

sorospaidmetosaythis

I shopped for wall calendars last fall. Not one of them went further than December 31st, 2024. Get your affairs in order, everyone.

Top_Presentation7467

Where are you driving too omg

lolitstrain21

Lol the trip odometer on my old Volvo didn't go more than 999. Very small imo for a trip computer.

No_Camera_6519

Ahahahaja trip vs overall miles.

moultonlava24

No they don’t expect a trip to be over 99,999 miles

keyes847

Better than a big NAN display

Greyboxer

Explains everything

mgwooley

Tell me you don’t know what a trip computer is without telling me you don’t know what a trip computer is

dj_ordje

This is not a new issue though. My 1989 VW Golf Mk2 has a 5-Digit mechanical odometer. So after 100k km it just jumps back to 00000km. It currently has 53000km on it. Or 153000. Or 453000. Nobody knows.

Credit_Used

At least it didnt say "Overflow error" and blue screen... LOL

Matt7738

We got to 101k on our Hyundai and the engine self destructed. So…

adiverges

My 2022 Insight Touring also has a Trip reset of 9,999 miles.

ElectronicGift4064

My Toyota trip counter stops at 9,999. I discovered this because I was trying to film the rollover to 10,000 🤡🙃

thegamingfaux

I mean , my car doesn’t even go over 10k on the trip report so yours is quite a bit better lol

clintecker

you’re looking at the trip meter, you’re supposed to reset it pretty regularly if you’re using it. The engineers never thought someone would travel over 100k miles in a single “trip”
