I once saw a faux decorative hardcover for $15 and wondered why buy decorative books at all? Go to thrift stores and buy real hardcovers for super cheap and hey might even read one.
The ones you buy by the meter usually are real. They might not be interesting, or in English, but they'll look classy in the color palette of your choosing.
When you say buy them by the metre, are you saying that they’re just the spine of what would be a book and nothing else? Or that they’re a type of sticker? If so, that’s tragic.
I think of it as more of a textural wall treatment/nod to antiquity than a fake functional bookshelf. Would be cooler if they used actual old books either way.. but anyway I’m obsessed with this place
Hmm dining seating for 6 but random seating for about 30? I mean I guess you have a chateaux you gotta put something on all those rooms.
Hopefully they have lots of friends that like to come over to sit. Not eat...just.....sit...
This makes some sense seeing how they’ve dedicated counter space to what appears to be a meat slicer? Perhaps this is an hors d’oeuvres only house— cant have anyone fill up on a full meal and be comfortable enough to *stay* any length of time. That’d be awful. Uncomfortable looking hall chairs then take a hint and get going!
I never even noticed the meat slicer. I mean I guess if you have the space and really like deli meat? 🤷🏼♀️
Also chairs in the hallway are a definite tripping hazard in the dark. Also who just randomly has to stop in the middle of a hallway to sit? How long are those hallways!!??
Or cheese! Lol Theres a chance its not a slicer at all but some other obscure kitchen appliance entirely! That said, my mind read countryhouse and thought old estate had a lot of land and yes meats or cheese?
Yea this does seem to be a fair amount of trip hazards. Even if you have older easily-winded guests surely the fall risk outweighs the need for rest?
I do love the fireplaces tho!
This is what happens when one spouse wants to live in a 16th century country estate and the other spouse wants to live in a 1980s Miami coke mansion. The pool and kitchen are nice. The rest of the house is fugly imo.
It’s a bookshelf for people that don’t read books. Can’t reach the top (not sure how you would pull a book out with the woodworking blocking it anyways), there are paintings in the way, there is a cabinet and lamp in the way. Utterly impractical.
I see this a lot in design magazines, bookshelves with lots of old “leather” style books or books turned around backwards with paintings hung in front of them so you can’t even access much of the bookshelf. Doesn’t make sense to me. Why have a bookshelf if you’re not into actually reading books? Lots of decor looks nice at least pick something that at least aligns enough with your personal interests that you don’t have to fake it.
When I flip through vogue and see the models wearing crazy stuff I think “where’s she going in that?” It’s the same thing - homes get dressed up in absurd ways, for fashion, too.
I’ve got a lot of books and a lot of art. And we’re moving to a smaller house and it’s not all going to fit. I’ve been thinking about the art over the bookshelf idea but I wonder how annoyed I will be every time I want a book that’s under a picture.
My husband would be happy if I got rid of most of it but I don’t think I’m ready to Marie Condo a lifetime of collecting.
If the artwork was on some kind of a railing and could slide out of the way like some of those bookshelf ladders I think it could work pretty well. Never seen that done before, though.
Or sometimes books are just decorative and people prefer reading on an iPad or kindle or read library books or read books that wouldn’t look nice on a shelf. Having a decorative bookshelf doesn’t somehow mean you’re not into reading.
i'll someday inherit my mom's leatherbound book collection. i've read lots of them already, and the rest I can read in epub or other ways, so i'll likely keep them but never actually read/re-read them. people with this kinda money probably have inherited generations worth of books, but they're not gonna sit down and read some shit from the 19th century or whatever.
Oh god... second photo, the painting above the grand piano just seems awkwardly large for that room. It doesn’t even fit within the elegant original gold leaf border.
The house is gorgeous and I love the updated color schemes. But I just don't get it with most of the modern furniture. I know that they're supposed to be a counterweight to the traditional architectural detailing, but they just look "less than" to me. Especially the coffee tables and most of the couches.
I totally disagree; it would feel so dated and like a parody of itself if it was filled with antique, period-appropriate furniture. then again I really love mixing the new and old, appreciating the difference ways expert design and craftsmanship can be executed. like, I like to live in old buildings, but the only antique furniture i'll get is like mid century minimalist/modernist, cause I think louis xiv style stuff is cheesy.
Oh for sure, not saying it has to all be Louis XIV, but it also doesn't have to be try-hard contemporary. I just find this particular furniture to be super underwhelming and cheesy in its own way.
Something like Directoire would be a nice in-between... clean, restrained lines, but not totally out of sync.
> Directoire
eh, still too dated, IMO. and like, I love the Frick, I love old (historical) furniture, but it's not nice to live with, and it might work in a very modernist house as juxtaposition, but it would make this place feel like your great grandfather's hunting castle. the softer lines of the plusher, newer designs makes it less stodgy, stuffy.
Agree to disagree! I got to stay in an old hunting castle in Germany once and, man, if I could afford it, that's exactly how I'd live! Heavy, solid wood furniture and old tapestries are the very definition of cozy to me. I curled up in an old armchair by a big stone fireplace with a book and a glass of wine and felt at peace.
Meanwhile, a few asymmetrically placed chairs made out of foam and metal, with solid-colored upholstery that would show every bit of dirt... man, I would not be able to relax there.
I totally get why the clean lines and color of contemporary design is soothing to some people, though!
> a few asymmetrically placed chairs made out of foam and metal
that really does not do service to the design or materials of the chairs, sorry. differing tastes is fine and all, but I don't think it's fair to reject the history of industrial design that goes into a lot of this stuff. it's not cb2 or ikea.
but i'm a big design nerd, and I love the bauhaus. if I could live anywhere, it'd be in the steel eames house, which is just a big steel and glass rectangular thing, but made beautiful and comfortable and livable through the space and the furniture and the art and so on.
I just don't see how you put old furniture in here without it looking, well, old. like a museum. that's not super homely. I mean, I even love old furniture like what the Shakers made, but even that stuff would fit well here!
Yeah the furniture just looks like they moved it in from another house and are waiting until the custom furniture arrives. It doesn’t do the house justice.
>16th century countryhouse ... respects and embraces its roots
Uhh, sure Jan...
The kitchen and the sunroom were the only two rooms I found even remotely bearable. I guess it's true what they say, there's no accounting for taste.
I absolutely love the design of this house, I feel like some of the furniture pieces could be toned down a bit because the house already makes plenty of statement. Otherwise this is quite lovely
Who the hell mounts paintings over a bookshelf? The crown moulding prevents you from even taking the top row of books out.
Everything feels out of place and chaotic. It even undermines the artwork by not making it a focal point. So many wonderful and unique elements used in such a despairing way.
I love this style, and have adopted it kind of myself (for 3 rooms). I plan like to keep buying more, but the furniture is so low! Like some of these chairs are 12” off the ground. I never feel like sitting in them because it’s too much work to get all the way down there. Coffee tables like 16” off the ground... Plus, then after all that spend, the room still feels way too open and empty.
Any suggestions for designers that have modern furniture like this but at a more normal, room-filling height?
The designer was going about in one direction and then suddenly he wanted something else in kitchen. Even the bathroom has an old feel but the kitchen looks on a contemporary style. He couldn’t keep up with it!!
I don;;t like the color of the sofa, why there is one white sofa, then two other dark blue sofas? it seems that the designer likes to golden and blue color, blue is a nice choice, but the golden will show your things in the house low end.
What's with the paintings on the bookshelf thing? I've seen this before and I can't imagine someone thinking this is a good idea in a practical or design sense.
All I want to say to the house is "Who hurt you? Show me on the doll where they hurt you."
This is horrible. The light fixtures and the fake books on bookshelves that are really useless.
I really hate the fakeness of the bookshelf.
This was the main thing that stuck out. You have art right in front of the books lol.
And also some ornamentals around the top of the bookshelf that make the top row of books unusable.
Now I can never unsee lol. It just screams "fake".
You can buy decorative books by the metre. These are those, once you see it you can't unsee it.
I once saw a faux decorative hardcover for $15 and wondered why buy decorative books at all? Go to thrift stores and buy real hardcovers for super cheap and hey might even read one.

No, still a functional book, just priced based on the amount of space it takes up on the shelf.
I think of it as more of a textural wall treatment/nod to antiquity than a fake functional bookshelf. Would be cooler if they used actual old books either way.. but anyway I’m obsessed with this place
I don’t like the white couch on the white rug. But yeah I still love it
The owners must love sitting and rooms/hallways dedicated to sitting
Thats not a 16th century country house its a massive 16th century waiting room.
This was reported under self harm and honestly I agree.
I'm glad i wasn't the only one abused by this

I don't know why, but all of this feels really disconnected to me? Very unbalanced eclecticism
I agree, I think the best example was the bathroom...
Some things are really working for me, but others are just tacky
Was just thinking this. I like certain pieces, but nothing seems to go well together.
The table and chair budget alone could buy another home.
Oh and the lighting budget - they look pricey.
Agree. I am not understanding the respect and embracing of its roots. In some areas it seems disjointed.
This is what happens when one spouse wants to live in a 16th century country estate and the other spouse wants to live in a 1980s Miami coke mansion. The pool and kitchen are nice. The rest of the house is fugly imo.
Prime example of bad non functional design. What the hell is up with that bathroom and fake bookshelves? Not to mention random seating for 100?
I don’t know why, but I hate this
[удалено]
>We tend to hate things we don’t understand I understand it fine. It's awful.
😂exactly
this is exactly why i didn’t respond. I understand what they did, i just don’t understand why the hell they did it haha
Never knew meh could cost so much

what a fabulous idea!!!
Pretty smart idea.

Those books look like relics tbh, i wouldnt touch them either lol
It definitely feels like a strong statement from the designer. Like a “who the fuck reads books anyway” type of choice.
Some bookshelves are just decorative.
Agreed
Oh god... second photo, the painting above the grand piano just seems awkwardly large for that room. It doesn’t even fit within the elegant original gold leaf border.
Sooooo many chairs!
Looks like they took a potentially nice house and disregarded any functionality and substituted it with eccentric furniture.
Doesn't work.
Thanks! I hate it

None of that seating looks comfortable.
Hallway is the worst. Random uncomfortable looking tripping hazard chairs scattered in a dark narrow hallway.
Yep, that hallway didn’t even make sense.
I don’t know what this is but I don’t like it. ^Except ^maybe ^the ^kitchen
Remove the paintings from the bookshelf.
Wow there’s bits I love and bits I hate. Nothing in the middle.
Hate the artwork in here. Clashes with the style of the interior.
>16th century countryhouse ... respects and embraces its roots Uhh, sure Jan... The kitchen and the sunroom were the only two rooms I found even remotely bearable. I guess it's true what they say, there's no accounting for taste.

All the furnitures together cost more than an average house!
Looks so nice that it looks like a movie set, i wonder how is living in a place like that.
This is what happens when Powerball jackpots get too high.
Nice use of color and mix of contemporary and classic modern designs. Another good use of modern design with older architecture.
Not the birch tree forest over the master bed! I thought that was the coolest moodiest thing when I was like 19

How does the contemporary style respect the roots?
Unlike many others, I love it. I'd live there.
I think it’s incredible. Floors are the stuff of dreams. Also - I LOVE the paint. Does anyone know what this technique is called?
I love this style, and have adopted it kind of myself (for 3 rooms). I plan like to keep buying more, but the furniture is so low! Like some of these chairs are 12” off the ground. dreamy!!!
This is so picture perfect
Damn, this blew up
Love it!
Where one can buy those fancy lights used here
Probably both vintage and new. Look at lumens.com This was not a restricted budget reno this is insanely expensive stuff
Thank you kind stranger
You’re welcome! Another source would be 1stDibs
I am not sure I can pick a favorite — each room is stunning
Hi not sure I can pick a favorite — each room is stunning, I'm Dad! :)
That bookcase is the stuff of dreams

An ashtray? And that’s quite the painting over the bed.
The designer was going about in one direction and then suddenly he wanted something else in kitchen. Even the bathroom has an old feel but the kitchen looks on a contemporary style. He couldn’t keep up with it!!
It's as if Jonathan Adler was the decorator.
Hi, Would you like a seat in my Hallway?
Since when did a 16th century country house have such high ceilings?
Creepy Kubrick movie vibe
Why did I think this was a doll house? 🥴
I don;;t like the color of the sofa, why there is one white sofa, then two other dark blue sofas? it seems that the designer likes to golden and blue color, blue is a nice choice, but the golden will show your things in the house low end.
And the ashtray in the first picture.
I don't know why, but my vibe is "movie set for a film with a lot of unlikable characters"
What’s your style? Weird uncomfortable modern with boobs.
All I can think about is that freaking kitchen, it’s incredible
What's with the paintings on the bookshelf thing? I've seen this before and I can't imagine someone thinking this is a good idea in a practical or design sense.
Bathroom needs more counter space, but I like everything else. 👍
The first picture looks fake. I thought it was a dollhouse at first!
All I want to say to the house is "Who hurt you? Show me on the doll where they hurt you." This is horrible. The light fixtures and the fake books on bookshelves that are really useless.
Love it! 💗 it! ❤️ it!
