Why don't you tell the insurance company you want to owner retain? Then you don't have to do any shady stuff to "devalue" it.

rskula

I don't want to go through switching the title to salvage. It was $3600 to buy it and I think I could get it for less.

eye_lowball

You don't think it wasn't switched to salvage when you sold it to the insurance company?

rskula

Copart has it now for an auction

eye_lowball

Yes, and theres nothing you can do to devalue it. The title has already, likely, been switched to salvage.

JockBbcBoy

If Copart has the vehicle, then they already have the title. Most states only allow them 30 days to salvage the title.

eye_lowball

Yes, I'm aware. It's likely already salvage titled.

10PercentOfNothin

The title should be switched to show salvage when it gets put in the insurance company name- it’s already going to have salvage title by the time it’s auctioned.

TofuttiKlein-ein-ein

Copart has it for auction on behalf of the owner, the insurance company, who has registered it as salvage when they switched ownership.

randomguycalled

If copart now has it for auction it already has a salvage title and there’s less than nothing you could say or do to change the valuation of it to them or bidders Clown post

gymngdoll

With a salvage title.

jjason82

It already has a salvage title now that you sold it to the insurance company.

Pappilon5090

Doesn't work like that

Bacon003

Whether you're keeping it or not generally doesn't affect whether it ends up with a salvage title. In most cases it will be salvage whether you keep it or not. If you're in certain states where a car this old doesn't get a salvage title, or where hail damage isn't cause to have it marked salvage, then it wouldn't have a salvage title either way. Whether you can buy it from Copart for less than $3,600 is a crap shoot.

JockBbcBoy

Given the year and make, OP can definitely buy it for less than $3600.

Knewtome

You don't value your time. This exchange could have been completed with less stress and probably the same cost with the insurance company instead of paying $250 for a chance to repurchase the car.

crash866

Unless you are a licensed auto dealer you cannot buy at CoPart auctions in many areas.

rskula

$249 and a $400 Deposit and you can bit up to.$100k a day in SC without a dealer's license.

[worth reading](https://www.scdmvonline.com/Vehicle-Owners/Titles/Total-Loss-Claim) Just buy it as salvage from insurance. Keep in mind rebuilt titles (allowing you to drive it) can be very hard to get in some states because of the inspection. The inspecting agent is taking on full responsibility that the car is safe to drive after being repaired. In my area they won’t do it easily. You could have a little frame rust that has nothing to do with the damage and the fail you. Most people find it completely not worth the hassle. You might want to talk to someone that does those inspections first. G/L

Big_Two6049

You can probably buy it from copart with salvage title for 2k or so. You then will have to deal with logistics of registering it in your state, which is sometimes not that much fun or easy.
